Now that Hafeez is part of the squad, its worth asking if he displaced another deserving player. So is his selection right?

Our selectors don't have any proper plan for future. They can select a test player for T20 squad in next World Cup. They keep recycling same players again and again. Some of them gets dropped after couple of series to shut up critics and bring them again. Some of the regular failures are undroppable. They select players whom they want.

His selection is perfect - he can bowl now as well.

Ul Haq needs cover/evidence before selecting him for the Test squad, come September (actually in laying XI - he'll start). Since Babar is injured and most likely not playing, there is a gap at the all important No. 3 spot against the swing, pace and bounce of ZIM attack - MoHa fits the bill perfectly, for his class, eligence, experience and 78/89 stats in ZIM. He needs just one big 2 digit innings against the might of ZIM - he'll be back in Test XI. Also, this is ZIM, hence MoHa won't need "extra effort" while bowling - that keeps his bowling stake intact for UAE Test series.

I am writing again - Sarfraz must pull-up socks & improve individual performance, otherwise, he might not be going to Toss in WC for PAK.

We already have five bowlers who can bowl full quota in the team. And Malik to the mix. He might be preferred over Malik but not the other five. Hence I don't think his bowling is needed.

Really we needed a reliable opener instead. One pure performance reasons, probably Kamran would have deserved to be selected. Otherwise maybe Manzoor but more for his ODI place rather than t20.

Farhan I would have thought most posters would suggest, but he seems a little raw atm, though Zimbabwe might have been the perfect place to test him out more.

didn't realise Farhan was already in the squad. Guess Kamran or Khurram then.

the choices provided in poll... seriously???:misbah3

May be Nauman Anwar?

Talat being dropped from the ODI squad is the bigger concern. I don't understand either as Asif Ali's in the ODI squad too.

Any young batsmen who has shown potential in PSL and domestic cricket would have sufficed.

Is there an option to select Shehzad? Out of all these three, hes the better choice.

Shan Masood deserved his slot in the ODI side after the amazing domestic season he had recently. Shan would feel gutted over not being selected even for series against Zimbabwe when he was head and shoulders better than everyone in domestics especially in limited overs

This poll is rather telling. Hafeez is without doubt the best selection from the names mentioned in the poll but that is all it is.

Malik's bowling has been poor for a long while now. I can't remember a good bowling performance from him in the recent past. In fact I think he is picked more as a batsman than anything else. Hafeez, despite his many flaws, is a far better bowler than Malik and as such, a better all-rounder.

I would have taken Hussain Talat in place of Hafeez as he's younger and capable batsman. He's got a bright future under Mickey unfortunately he might stay with the team against Zim unless Babar passes fit. Hussain would be a solid played to have in the World Cup.

Hussain Talat is in the T20I squad...

I know. But he's not in the ODI team and I would take him over Hafeez. If Babar isn't fit then it would be easier to bring in Hussain Talat into the ODI team then having to call up someone from Pakistan.

Yes I agree that Hussain Talat should have been in ODI's. This thread is regarding T20Is though, who do you think should have been picked over Hafeez? Or was it the right decision to pick him?

Oh........

Well I don't think picking Hafeez was the right decision as his time has come and gone long time ago. As for who I think should have been selected, I would got with either Agha Salman or Zafar Gohar.

You last paragraph is totally wrong .hafeez won.t captain pakistan in worldcup i can bet you that .

TBH, the choices provided in the poll aren't great but still better than the talentless wonder Hafeez. I would prefer a younger player selected, as there needs to be more future planning during this series and Hafeez is too old and in decline from an already low talent base.

If I am given a choice bw Imran Farhat and Mohammad Hafeez, I will select Farhat

He is still pretty useful, if his bowling is still as good. but only if he bats at 6/7

Pick your four best batsmen, play Sarfraz at 4 then...

6. Hafeez
7. Shadab
8. Faheem
9. Nawaz
10. Hasan
11. Shinwari / Amir

If he's been picked for his bowling, further more shows the problems of Pakistan cricket. The game is dominated by batting, more so in the longer versions, but even in T20 batting is more important. Yet we're always looking for ways to strengthen our bowling or add another bowler thinking that'll mitigate our batting.

It's partly the reason why we never have a strong batting side. We just never really focus on improving it, we always throw our resources and focus behind bowling. We're ready to drop a batsman from the side just to add in an a guy who can bowl a bit who may not find space to bowl. And you'll never be a consistent top team side if you don't have a strong batting line up. On the other hand there are teams who can be a consistently strong side with batting alone (India were more of an example of that say in 2011, but have become more well rounded since then).

Well the team coach had mentioned that Hafeez will be back if he is able to bowl again and so he is. Now I don't think there was any doubts of his returning after he cleared the test.
