India against New Zealand in their last five T20Is: W, W, W, W, W

India and New Zealand will resume their rivalry in the shortest format when they square off in the league stage of the T20 World Cup 2021. Both the teams lost their respective opening ties against Pakistan and are in desperate need of a win. The losing team will move closer to being eliminated early.

Going into the contest, the Kane Williamson-led side has an upper hand as Black Caps are undefeated against the Men in Blue in T20 World Cups. They have locked horns in T20 World Cups twice and NZ have emerged on the top on both occasions. In fact, India haven't defeated NZ in an ICC event since 2003.

The last time they met in an ICC event, NZ conquered India to win the World Test Championship. As the two teams gear up to resume their on-field rivalry, here's a look at Black Caps' undefeated record against India in T20 World Cups -

2007

India emerged as the champions of the 2007 T20 World Cup but they did lose a contest en route to the title victory. Their only defeat came against NZ in the 13th match. Chasing a huge target of 191 against the Daniel Vettori-led side, India got a solid start with Gautam Gambhir (51 off 33) and Virender Sehwag (40 off 17) adding 76 runs for the first wicket.

None of the succeeding batsmen made a noteworthy contribution and India fell short by 10 runs. Skipper Vettori led his team from the front and dismissed 4 batsmen. He also scored 15 off 5.

2016

India were the heavy favourites going into the contest to kick off their T20 World Cup campaign with a win. But they were handed a shock defeat by Kane Williamson & Co. India went in with one specialist spinner in R Ashwin and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. On the other hand, NZ played Ish Sodhi and 2 spin-bowling all-rounders - Nathan McCullum and Mitchell Santner.

The Indian bowlers did their job to perfection by restricting NZ to 126/7. But the Indian batsmen bowed to NZ's spin supremacy as their spinners dismissed 9 batsmen. India were bowled out for a mere 79 to lose the tie by 47 runs. Santner scalped 4 wickets

india 55-45 favourite, however, they have to negotiate the inswing of bolt in the first powerplay.

Indian team will need to change their mood and uplift their spirts. They simply were not interested in chasing the win.

It clearly looked as if too much cricket plus IPL has taken it's toll. There was fatigue, loss of interest and loss of passion in the game against Pakistan.

I hope it stays like this with them. I am supporting NZ.

I was in the stadium. There was simply nothing like that. Pakistan outplayed them simple. Just as we outplayed them in 2017 champions trophy final.

Fatigue, IPL are all excuses.

I dislike our team of over pampered and overrated cricketers and never wanted them to win this cup, but with the remote prospect of India pakistan final makes me want them to win this match. Amidst all the criticism of Indian team in Pakistan match, one thing can't be missed that inspite of being down 2 wickets for virtually nothing, India still managed to get to 150+, which is not a bad score at all. It was our bad bowling that pakistan won so easily. Though Kiwis have a habit of surprising us when least expected, in this case though it is expected.

I don't think India have any chances against NewZealand.
We have some mental block against them and they have upper hand in ICC events.
With Kohli is in the charge and with some out of form batting and bowling i'm backing NZL to win.
MOM- D Conway or Boult.

Hmm, although i have nothing against indian team or most of Pakistani players - but some players like this asif ali, rizwan etc should be definitely be challenged.
Shaheen, babar are kings but these 40 yo & rizwan n asif needs a reality check

that is only in ODIs. In T20s, NZ are very ordinary side. fully expect India to thrash them tomorrow. Bigger challenge with be afghanistan

Hopefully New Zealand.

India would obviously be favorites going into the match. But then New Zealand also happen to have their number in ICC tournaments. In the last World Cup it was the same spin duo of Sodhi and Santner that knocked off India for 79.

Again it's down to toss. Don't think there's too much gap between the two sides for any of them to overturn the advantage of a favoured coin toss.

Fast bowler Tim Southee feels coming off losses in their respective tournament openers, both India and New Zealand would be desperate to outwit each other in what promises to be an exciting T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 game between the two ‘very good sides’.

Both India and New Zealand were handed defeats by Pakistan in their tournament openers. While Virat Kohli’s men were drubbed by 10 wickets in their first Group 2 match, the Black Caps lost by five wickets.

And the Kiwi pacer said come Sunday, both the wounded sides would be eager to open their tally in the showpiece.

“They (India) are a quality side. They have shown that for many years and for them as well coming off a loss, they will be eager to win as well. So, it should be a great contest against two very good sides,” Southee said after a practice session on Friday.

“It’s always tight in the first game. We went far off against a quality Pakistan side but we need to look forward in such a short tournament. There are no easy games so it’s now about focus shifting towards India.”

Southee, who claimed his 100th T20 wicket in the loss against Pakistan, said adapting to the conditions and wickets is the need of the hour. New Zealand will be playing at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium for the first time during the competition, while India lost at the same ground in their opener.

“We knew coming here is different to how we play in New Zealand. So, you have to adapt to those conditions, you also have to adapt to all three grounds as well. They offer different assistance for the seamers. We saw in Sharjah slower balls and back of the length worked. In Dubai, the wicket has little more pace in it and seems to be a better wicket,” he observed.

Asked about his 100 T20 wicket milestone, Southee said: “It’s nice when you play for a while and get a milestone. Not many people have done it so far with T20 not being around for too long. Not only T20, but all three formats. It's a challenge to juggle all three formats and to be able to do that for a long period of time is pretty satisfying.”

“Looking at ways to keep improving your game, adapt to different conditions, different formats is something I have looked to do over the years. Hopefully there is many more years to come,” he added.

There is no doubt that India has been given preference in this T20 by "manufacturing" a group for them where they can easily move to the next round without much of upset. Yes applies to Pakistan as well, but putting virtually all of competitive teams (yes including Bangla and SL as they are much better than Scotland and Namibia) in one group and the other 3 (India, Pak, NZ) having an easier group makes the tournament rather boring from competitive perspective. Not low balling lower ranked teams but they should have been distributed evenly to make both groups balanced.

Financial incentives now always getting the preference is a curse to this game.

Bangladesh was supposed to be in Group 1 but they lost to Scotland

In Euroleague they do something similar with big clubs like Real Madrid etc.

Unfortunately, money runs all sports and its effect so much more accentuated in Cricket.

Still, let's hope for a competitive Ind vs NZ/Afg

As India prepares for their second game of the 2021 T20 World Cup, they are still bound to be scars that remain from India's defeat to Pakistan in the opening encounter. The Men in Blue will be wary of not losing wickets in the powerplay as they did to Shaheen Afridi last Sunday.

During India's clash with Pakistan, Afridi gave the Men in Green a dream start as he dismissed the Indian opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in his first two overs within the powerplay. Later Afridi also took the wicket of Virat Kohli on his way to winning the Man of the Match award.

India's vulnerability against left-arm pace has not gone unnoticed with New Zealand pacer Trent Boult who is in the mood to repeat the Pakistan pacer's heroics.

Speaking ahead of the match Boult sent a word of warning to the Indian camp saying, "The way Shaheen bowled the other night. From a left-armer, watching on I thought it was amazing. Hopefully, from my point of view, it swings around a little bit and I can mirror what Shaheen did the other night."

The 32-year-old however praised India's batting unit and recognized the threat they possess in the shortest format of the game.

"India brings a lot of challenges, quality batting lineup. We just need to be clear with our options on how to shut these guys down and obviously give them a bit bigger chase as possible," said Boult.

He added, "India have quality batters so getting early wickets is definitely the focus for us as a bowling group."

Boult has previously hurt Indian batsmen in big games notably the 2019 World Cup semi-final where he dismissed Virat Kohli for just 1 as India crumbled to a score of 5-3 chasing 240.

He later had dismissed the high-flying Ravindra Jadeja to take the Kiwis on the brink of victory and a place in the World Cup final.

Q. Going by the reaction, especially on social media, it feels like this India team is not allowed to lose a game. But every time there's pressure, your team has shown the capabilities to bounce back, the way players like Shami was cool on social media after the Pakistan game. What is the message like? What makes this Indian team so resolute, be it 36 all out, be it the innings at Headingley, and be it now after this Pakistan game, sort of mastering the match against New Zealand, what makes this team so resolute?

VIRAT KOHLI: There's a good reason why we are playing on the field and not a bunch of spineless people on social media that have no courage to actually speak to any individual in person. They hide by their entities and go after people through social media, making fun of people. And that has become a social pandemic in today's world, which is so unfortunate and so sad to see because this is literally the lowest level of human potential that one can operate at. And that's how I look at these people.

We, as individuals, understand what we want to do on the field. And the strength of character and mental toughness we have and precisely why we are doing what we are doing on the field and none of these people are even in the vicinity to even imagine to do something like that, they do not have the courage or the spine to do that.

So that is how I see things. And all this drama that's created on the outside is purely based on people's frustrations, their lack of self-confidence, their lack of compassion.

And hence, they find it so amusing to go after people. So we as a group understand how we need to stick together, how we need to back individuals, how we need to focus on our strengths, and whether people on the outside portrayed being the fact that India cannot afford to lose a game, that's none of our business because we play the sport and we understand exactly how the sport goes.

So how people think on the outside has no value whatsoever within our group. We've never focused on it. We will never focus on it going forward either because, look, as I said last time as well, people do not understand what it takes to do the job on the field at the international level.

And we're not going to go around and just announcing to everyone what we do and how we do it. We just carry on doing the business that we are supposed to do, and if a game goes off, you take the learnings from it and move forward.

Not one game is more important than the other. Every game of cricket is as important and so will be the case in the next game as well.

Q. Can you confirm the fitness status of Hardik and whether the team is tempted to tweak combinations a little bit?

VIRAT KOHLI: Hardik is fine, if you're talking about the blow on the shoulder, he's absolutely fine.

Q. Where do you see Shardul fitting into India's combinations? Do you see him as a run option for Hardik or even as one of the front three fast bowling slots considering he's bowled across phases in recent IPL and even picked 16 wickets in the UAE league?

VIRAT KOHLI: He's definitely a guy who's in our plans, constantly making a case for himself. And he's definitely someone that can bring a lot of value to the team. Now what role he plays or where he fits in, that's something that I cannot obviously talk about right now. But Shardul is someone who has great potential and he will add great value to the team.

Q. How do you assess Bhuvi's performance in IPL, and the first game against Afghanistan, like, what do you make how he's shaping up and how he's doing?

VIRAT KOHLI: I don't want to single out any individuals. I think as a bowling group we failed to pick up wickets. And we understand that can happen in the sport. It's not a guarantee that every time you take the field you won't be able to pick up wickets. These are the same guys that have been doing the job for us for a long period of time. We understand how things went and where they went wrong.

And we totally accept and know that we got outplayed by the opposition thoroughly and you need to accept that. You need to accept that as a professional cricket team, without any ego, without any excuses whatsoever. We have given none. And we will not give any excuses moving forward either. And hence I'm saying I'll not single out individuals. We lost as a team, and that's exactly what we believe in and that exactly was the case in the previous game.

Q. Just before you, when Trent had his PC, he said he's looking to mirror what Shaheen did against you guys the last game. So knowing that he's able to get the ball to swing early on, and as a batting unit how do you see it, because obviously in the powerplay you are looking to score some runs. So how does the balance part come in?

VIRAT KOHLI: Yeah, I mean, we obviously will come up against some quality bowlers all around the world in this competition, and hence the intensity and the level at which this competition operates is very, very different.

So we know that. We played against these individuals for a long period of time. It's not something out of the ordinary that's going to come our way. And it all depends on how we take the field mentally and how we counter that.

If Trent says he wants to replicate what he did, what Shaheen did against us, obviously he's motivated to do so and we have to be motivated to counter that and try to put pressure on him and the other bowlers as well. That's how basically the game goes anyway.

We played against all these bowlers for a long period of time. And we understand exactly what we need to do. All that matters now is, when we step onto the field, what kind of mental frame we're in. I feel absolutely confident hitting that ball fairly and not thinking about any other scenarios, I think that's key to batting in high-pressure situations and it's something that we're looking forward to execute as a team.

Q. Is toss becoming too big a factor because of the dew around?

VIRAT KOHLI: It will continue to be a big factor. That's the nature of this tournament. You can look at this situation in two ways. Either you can bank too much on the toss or you can challenge yourself as a team to say, okay, even if we lose the toss, we're good enough to bowl or bat in any conditions. And that should be the attitude because you don't have time in the shortest format of the game to think too much about what happened at the toss. The game goes away from you pretty quickly in two or three overs in the whole course of the game, as we saw in the last game as well.

So for us our only focus is how those 11 individuals are placed mentally and how we're looking to approach this game.

It's been a long break for us. It's been a lot of time waiting and just doing nothing, really, for us as a team. Now we're just itching to go back on the park and be competing again and look to correct the things that didn't happen well in the first game.

Q. Just Jasprit Bumrah has been a tremendous performer for the team over the last few years. Do you feel the team is overdependent on him every time he takes the field; the team is looking to him for taking wickets? And the second thing is the way Mohammed Shami was attacked in social media over his religion after the Pakistan match. As a captain, how are you backing him up?

VIRAT KOHLI: Look, Jasprit is obviously the best all-format bowler in the world. That's why there's precisely so much expectation on him, not just from people on the outside, but himself as well. He takes a lot of pride in that. We're not at all bothered about how much expectations he takes.

On the outside, it doesn't matter, honestly. All the other bowlers we believe are good enough to pick us wickets and in the last game, including just Jasprit Bumrah not able to pick up wickets. And hence, I said as a unit we did not execute the plans that we wanted to and the opposition also did not allow us to come into the game as a batting unit and as a bowling unit.

So it's not a given that that will happen again and again. We are quality cricketers. We know what we need to do. And when we execute on our day, we can beat any team convincingly anywhere in the world. And we've shown that time and time again.

On the second part, as I rightly mentioned before, to me, attacking someone over their religion is the most, I would say, pathetic thing that a human being can do. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion and what they feel about certain situations. But I personally have never ever even thought of discriminating anyone over their religion. And that is a very sacred and a personal thing to every human being and that should be left there.

So as I said, people take out their frustrations because they obviously have no understanding of what we do as individuals.

They have no understanding of how much effort we put on the field. They have no understanding of the fact that someone like Mohammed Shami has won India N number of matches in the last few years. And he's been our primary bowler with Jasprit Bumrah, when it comes to making an impact in games. And in Test cricket you see him run in to bowl. If people can overlook that and his passion for the country, honestly I don't even want to waste one minute of my life to give any attention to those people and neither does Shami and neither does anyone else on the team.

We stand by him fully. We're backing him 200 percent. And all those who have attacked him can come with more force if they want to. Our brotherhood and friendship within the team, nothing can be shaken. And I can guarantee you as the captain of the team that we have built a culture where these things will not even infiltrate into this environment .0001 percent. And that's an absolute guarantee from my side.

Q. Can you give us a sense of the feeling in the camp, the in the World Cup against India on Sunday night?

TRENT BOULT: The boys are pretty upbeat. They're excited at the chance to take on India tomorrow night. Not the best start for us against Pakistan, who obviously are playing some very good cricket at the moment. But the guys are excited and looking forward to the challenge that India brings.

Q. We're obviously seeing a lot of successful chases so far in this tournament. If you end up having to defend a total against India, what's going to be the key to sort of breaking that trend?

TRENT BOULT: Whatever we do first, I think we need to do it extremely well. India brings a lot of challenges, quality batting lineup. But with the ball, I think we just need to be clear with our options on how to shut these guys down and obviously give them the bigger chase as possible.

It's going to be a good challenge, our first game at Dubai, but the wicket looks pretty good there. But looking forward to taking them on.

Q. There's been a lot of talk about you and Rohit Sharma, IPL, and then of course the left-arm swing coming in to him. Now that there's been so much talk about that and also KL Rahul doing so well. What is the plan B for Trent Boult if not batting swing arm?

TRENT BOULT: I suppose it depends when I get the ball. I'm not too sure what the plan is with what overs certain bowlers are bowling. But I thought the way Shaheen bowled the other night from a left-armer, watching on I thought it was amazing. But there's quality batsmen in that India lineup.

Early wickets are definitely the focus for us as a bowling group. But we just need to be nice and clear and nice and accurate on where we're trying to put the ball. But hopefully, from my point of view, it swings around a little bit and I can mirror what Shaheen did the other night.

Q. Pakistan came in with a fair amount of pace to spin one of their strengths. How differently is it preparing for India's bowling attack and what do you make of that?

TRENT BOULT: Much of the same, in a way. Their bowlers bring a lot of pressure, a lot of accuracy. The batting unit definitely hungry to put on a decent score, and really put some pressure on the opposition.

But the way Pakistan have gone about their business in this tournament so far, obviously playing some great cricket. They've really set the tone. So we haven't played too much cricket in the tournament as yet, but the boys are just very excited to get out there and get our campaign off to a good start.

Q. On a lighter note, how has New Zealand managed, how to stay, arguably, the second most favourite team for every Indian after giving India so much hurt, 2019 World Cup, semifinals, followed by that World Test Championship final. But still New Zealand remains probably the second most favourite team almost for every Indian. Is it the dignity, is it your team culture, the dignity with which you play your cricket?

TRENT BOULT: I think firstly, when it comes to these world events, playing India is always an exciting match. The fans and the audience that comes with it is very exciting. And of course as players we want to take on the best players and really showcase our skills, et cetera.

So we've had some good memories. We're really excited about tomorrow night in terms of the style of cricket that we play.

And I suppose we try to go out there, play in the right spirits, play with a smile on our face. And look to enjoy the game is probably the byproduct of the fans we get around the world.

But we're very excited about the stage we'll be on tomorrow night. And hopefully we can upset and get our campaign off into the winning form and carry on through this tournament. But hopefully it's a good one.

Q. Is there any latest update on Gup after he took the blow the last game?

TRENT BOULT: Gup is pretty good. He trained fully yesterday, didn't see too many issues with him. He's definitely a big piece of the puzzle for us at the top of the innings. So from what I know he's good to go.

Q. Everyone is talking about this game as a virtual knockout. How are you guys thinking about this one against India?

TRENT BOULT: Every game is a good game. We've had a few lay days in between games already. But we're excited to get out there. Definitely want to get a check in the win column for us.

All games are a big win. But here's hoping we can really go out there and put together the things that we've been trying to and get out to a real good start.

Q. How do you think -- like New Zealand and India have played each other quite a lot recently, the World Test Championship and IPL as well. How do you think that stacks up ahead of this picture?

TRENT BOULT: Like I touched on before, there's always a lot of excitement that comes with playing India. And we've probably enjoyed some success over them over the last few years, I suppose, on these ICC tournaments.

But it definitely doesn't mean we'll treat them lightly or anything like that. It's a big game for both teams. And I'm sure we're both looking forward to putting on a good show.

Q. How do you see the prospects of your team in the next match? I mean, do you believe that New Zealand has an extra edge when it comes to T20 when it comes to against India, or do you have to believe that IPL has given, particularly in the UAE, has given India an extra edge?

TRENT BOULT: I wouldn't say we have an extra edge. I think both sides are stacked with quality players. In terms of our team, we're definitely excited about the opportunity that lies ahead for us. A few guys have been here playing IPL and UAE and obviously have relationships and have played a lot of these Indian guys a lot.

So here's hoping we can put it all together tomorrow afternoon and get our ball rolling.

Q. You've played a fair bit on these grounds during the IPL and for New Zealand as well. In terms of what they offer to fast bowlers, how do you contrast Abu Dhabi?

TRENT BOULT: I would say these conditions here are a big challenge, to be honest. They can change drastically across the many weeks that we've been here.

But in terms of our side, and I suppose the tools we have in our shed is a lot of experience. Guys that can perform on certain wickets, and we feel confident that we have the skills to beat India tomorrow night. But it's definitely a big challenge, definitely unusual, well, foreign conditions to what we're used to back home.

But that's the joy of international cricket and World Cup cricket, it's about testing yourself on numerous conditions. Here's hoping we go on tomorrow night.

Q. In the UAE we have seen the trend that people who are chasing while bowling second, they're having a dew -- they're affected by dew as well. Are there any specific preparations by your team and you on how to combat dew if you get to bowl second?

TRENT BOULT: That's a good question. I suppose it's a hard one to understand how much dew is going to come in. But from the one game we've experienced so far there hasn't been too much of it, the overheat conditions. It cooled down a lot nicely.

So you've just got to, I suppose, take your time and make sure you've got a good grip on the ball and just be as accurate as you can. But it's going to be an exciting game and hopefully some good cricket is played and it's a nice, entertaining match for everyone watching.

Q. Being in the bio bubble, a lot of time is spent on the team floor. Can you give us an idea of the sort of activities and in particular the table tennis where you seem to be spending quite a bit of time?

TRENT BOULT: As you can imagine, there's not a lot to do. But the boys are in good spirits. A couple of good table tennis competitions. The guitar has been out a bit and a bit of singing. I don't have it here for you today, unfortunately.

But the boys are just ticking along. We've played a few lay days in between games. And I think the second half of our tournament is going to happen quite quickly. We're looking forward to get involved and we can't wait for tomorrow night.

Q. Who has been rolling the table tennis court, in your opinion?

TRENT BOULT: Can I say Gary Stead, the head coach? I don't want to say too eager. But he's a good player, closely followed by Cole Jameson, good player.

3 changes and we should win this. Chasing would be perfect though looking at how this WC has panned so far!!

How are you sure? LOL.

I think they can lose to England or New Zealand.

Technically India can still lose to both. Even if Ind lose to NZ and then win rest of the games with big margin and AFG beat NZ and lose to Ind, NRR will decide the 2nd in the group probably. ENG for sure is going to win the group.

Toss will become less of the factor now as the weather gets drier while this tournament heads to its finale. I would actually go on to say that team batting first would do better in the playoffs.

India should open the bowling with Chakravarthy or Ashwin. Kohli's bowling tactics have been so predictable in LOIs ever since he took up the role.

I think India will be too strong for them. They won't make the same mistakes twice. Unless they have hit the proverbial invisible long on the tooth wall that hits tournament teams eventually.

T20 encounters are very hard to predict. Upsets are very common these days. It’s foolish to make predictions, is what I have learned. Toss will be crucial that’s all I can say.

India has been badly judged and underestimated for the Pakistan match. Let's see if they really turn up now. Kohli hates losing

India will thrash NZ - I consider them serious contenders for the title - the Pakistan loss was a temporary setback.

India has been badly judged and underestimated for the Pakistan match. Let's see if they really turn up now. Kohli hates losing

Kohli hates losing and Williamson, Rohit, Boult, Jadeja etc love loosing😩

I want NZ to win as i feel Afg can Beat nz but will lose to Ind so with all 3 on same points and 1 team going through.

Didnt expect team India to lose vs NZ in the UAE.

PAK & NZ both are strong teams and special mention for PAK who always have been really good in the shortest format plus its in the UAE.

INDIA now needs a miracle and boost their NRR big time.

The game between NZ vs Afghan team will be massive now.

I posted the comment on 10/28.

Did you hear what Kohli say after losing today?
