A lot of English fans believe that cricket has a better atmosphere than football. What do you guys think? IMO basketball is the dullest

Football has the best.
followed by

Cricket - T20 and ODI's are watchable. Tests are good if you have enough time on hand
Tennis
Kabbadi - charged up atmosphere just like Wrestling/Boxing.

F1 - great for the first 15 min lol
Hockey - used to be fun about 30 years back

Golf / Chess - slow mo crowd so no interest to me

Football and rugby imo.

A football game at Bayern Munich's home and an All Blacks game in New Zealand will have a great atmosphere.

Rugby has generally a very good atmosphere, but its got to be Football..cant think of anything that can match a classico at La Bombonera or Istanbul or any other derby game for that matter.

Soccer has the best atmosphere. Nothing comes close.

Football does have amazing atmosphere for sure.

I think it depends on the match/event. Ive been to boxing/mma events with big fights, very loud. Cricket can be great too esp in England if the match is competitive.

Football has an 'atmosphere' which at times can be electric but a lot of the type its just fat middle aged men shouting abuse. Getting transport away from a football stadium is also a tense affair imo. You always feel like something is going to kick off.

Boxing is the same. There is also clear bias in boxing fans. They will support a white brit over a black/asian brit and the atmosphere can get tense at times.

International Cricket and rugby are great family days out for the most part. The crowds are jovial, good banter to be had and their is less of a risk of violence.

Darts also seems to have a brilliant atmosphere for what is essentially the dullest sport to watch.

The top heavyweight boxing bouts have an excellent atmosphere with all the big's wigs out in numbers. From Hollywood actors to rappers and even gangsters it is their big day out. Such big fights are very few nowadays. Generally, the EPL is the best in the world.

Cricket atmosphere is pretty much dead, nothing compares to football.

Sorta agree.
Not a whole lot left to celebrate or cheer about.
six after six after six after 4 after six as commentators desperately trying to put fake emotions in their made up reactions while viewers gotten immune to these meaningless rain of four n sixes in boundary sizes smaller than my kitchen.

Test cricket atmosphere in England is not bad though. I like it.
Generous British crowds applauding a good play by players on either side.

I think soccer/football environment is on another level. Cricket atmosphere doesn't come anywhere near.

It could be due to the fact soccer/football is popular worldwide. Only a handful of countries play cricket.

football has the best atmosphere worldwide, however cricket in england is also very enjoyable, especially the t20 blast games on a friday night or any international cricket tbf, england is one of the only countries where grounds that will sell out more often then not

Test cricket in England, India, or Australia.

Also lower league / non league football in England.

Football, football, football, then boxing and MMA.

Cricket in the old days of firecrackers at Headingley was amazing, now it's restricted to the Ashes.

Why is Kabaddi not an option? Have seen few matches in local villages and fantastic atmosphere.
Also Pro Kabaddi League gets good crowd as well.

Added kabaddi as an option.

For me it has to be football. The passion is second to none.

The literal buzzing and humming of English cricket cannot be denied. Jerusalem at full pelt on a crisp spring morning.

But a bouncing Kop, Glwadys Street, Holte End, Stratford Road...iconic and unmatched. So football is unrivalled when a stadium or a group of even away fans are in thrall of their team.

Worst has to be ICC tournaments over last 15 years bar none.

I love the smaller lower league teams with their old school shed style grounds, where the crowd is right next to the pitch and everything/everyone is packed closely together & there is a great banter between fans. I have been to a few matches where this has been the case. That’s a magnificent atmosphere.

sorry but no - you know you English fans are jealous of the Germany atmosphere.

However the best atmosphere is the Australian open for tennis

German football is all fake. Megaphones. Only Dortmund has an actual 'atmosphere'. Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows have the best in the tennis. Golf deserves a mention for the
British
Open.

1 - dear lord, ur jealous of german football
2. roland garros is very good, buy way behind aussie open in tennis atmosphere - for a neutral aspect
3- flushing meadows is again nor best for the neutral game - e.g. Aslan Karatsev v Jannik Sinner which is 18th v 10th

Huh?. I love Bundes despite huge disparity between Bayern and rest. Other than Union Berlin, the big lebowski team and maybe Coln with obviously Dortmund, who brings the atmosphere?.

Ibrox and Celtic Park are two unbelievable ones. In. South America maybe Boca and a few Brazilian teams. The Turks and Egypt generate crazy atmospheres. Not Germany

Quite telling how few Indians have turned up in this thread to support cricket considering it is their main sport. Even the ones who have contributed are half-heartedly talking about kabaddi or chess.

If you know sport, you understand local rivalry. Indians sold their soul when they put money above love for the game. Not the fans we must understand, but their govt directives which pushed BCCI into elevating England and Australia as their big 3 partners in a tiny pool. Where is the Big 3 now? The Ashes is still there without a doubt, but will India ever be a part of it?

I went to see Hamburg and also Dortmund play and it was an electric atmosphere in both games, particularly the Dortmund one. This was around 2015 and it's been one of the best games I've witnessed.

Ibrox and Celtic Park can be amazing but I don't think the Germans are too far away from that.

In the EPL from the games that I have seen I would say Everton and Liverpool stand out.

I was once in attendance for the world snooker final enjoying every minute off it. It was obviously not noisy but the tension was amazing with everyone glued to the table as if their lives depended on it.

Darts can also be electric with hundred's of drunkard beer bellied yobs having a go at each other:facepalm:!

Now they are talking about darts and snooker, Oh IPL, where art though?

Don't knock Snooker. It is brilliant to play and watch where as Darts it is a past time sport for alcoholics:lara

Nicely put. A good atmosphere doesn’t just have to be loud.

Football. Though it can also be the worst. Like the very air feels wrong.

Though the nicest atmosphere I felt was Lord’s in 2004. With the final shot of his cricket career, Nasser brought up his hundred, won the match and completed the 3-0 whitewash of the Kiwis. England got a ten-minute standing ovation.

For me tennis, easily. The pin drop silence during the points as a mark of respect towards the athletes, and eruption of cheers when a point is won after a breathtaking 40 shots long rally. Even when there is a lot of noise, all it takes is one gentle request by the chair umpire to make a sports crowd behave like an orchestra audience. Also I like the fact that generally the crowd doesn't cheer errors, moreover the underdog gets some support when he/she is losing irrespective of who is standing on the other side of the net, it may be Federer or Serena Williams. And 99% cases you don't witness hooliganism or racist behavior by the crowd, players aren't made fun of if they are having a bad day. People will turn up and cheer the players even if they are unknown wildcards not from the host nation, that is a big minus when it comes to cricket.

IMO it strikes the best balance between raw sporting passion and respectful behavior. Other sports have extremes, and more cacophony in majority of the popular sports like football, MMA, cricket.

But any answer is fine, may also depend on the likes of an individual, I see mention of darts here, may look boring to me but only those who have experienced such an atmosphere can pass judgement.

Strange how cricket and it's most febrile supporters are not discussing here. Is the Ashes really the only passion driven international cricket series? Football, chess, tennis...so many sports yet we still seem reluctant to talk about the elephant in the room. Something is missing.

Only 2 votes for cricket so far. Is that surprising considering that cricket is the major sport for the majority of posters on this site? Or is the sport just past it's sell by date?

Is cricket primarily known for its crowd buzz though? Imo (Test) cricket is best with a sell out crowd, but it’s still a very watchable sport when there is little or no crowd due to the tension of the playing conditions and match situation. Whereas football behind closed doors just feels absolutely *dead*.

Yes, we saw that during the pandemic conditions last year. Some of the cricket played in England during the summer of 2020 was of the highest quality, whereas other sports such as football and rugby suffered considerably due to a lack of a crowd. Tennis is perhaps the other sport which doesn't depend so much on the crowd to build narrative.

Never really thought about it. As far as football goes, I’m reasonably happy with the English product.

English product it very good, however when i watch some fan channel on youtube and thr in germany, all i hear is that thr stadiums are on another level

Boxing, Cricket and high profile raslin shows. It all depends on the card / match-making or rivals.

I was there live for P4P great Lomachenko vs Campbell at the 02, I’ve seen the Undertaker and John Cena make surprise appearances in NYC and experienced the electric atmospheres of a Pakistan game at Edgbaston and Nottingham. All incredible crowds and magical moments.

College football in America, I never seen anything like that.

They attract the biggest and the most passionate crowd .
Many of college football stadium have more than hundred thousand capacity.

The Battle at Bristol was an American college football game played at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee on Saturday, September 10, 2016, between the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Virginia Tech Hokies. It holds the record for NCAA football's largest single-game attendance at 156,990.

Yup, came to write that here. I would say even pre season games in NFL has better atmosphere than cricket it’s funny!
