I would choose between Graham Gooch's 154 v West Indies at Leeds in 1991,Roy Frederick's 169 at Perth in 1975-76 ,Graham Gooch's 153 in Jamaica in 1981 ,Majid Khan's 167 at Georgetown and Sunil Gavaskar's 90 at Ahmedabad in that order of merit.
I choose Gooch's Leeds 154 at the top because of the manner in which he held the fort and totally reverted the shape of the game.Literally saved England from the depths of despair blending the courage of a soldier with the skill of a technician..Frederick's 169 displayed counter attack at it's deepest height against the most lethal fast bowling pair of Lillee-Thomson ever on the quickest of tracks. No opener was ever more mercurial against Jeff Thomson at his quickest resembling a bomber plane launching a counter attack scoring a century of only 71 balls. For breathtaking strokeplay few could surpass Gooch's 153 at Kingston against the best pace attack ever in the history of the game. For retrieving a sinking ship Majid's 167 at Georgetown was true classic containing every ingredient of a perfect test innings be it technique strokeplay or concentration.Considering the sttae of the wicket I consider Gavaskar's 90 at Ahmedabad v West Indies a classic ,tearing apart the likes of Marshall and Holding.
