This is my list of best test innings in a dead rubber after a series has been decided be it lost or won.In brackets I am placing whether the team the batsmen played for won or lost the series.

1.Viv Richard's 291 at the Oval in 1976(won)

2.Viv Richard's 110 v England in 5th test at Antigua in 1986.(won)

3.Brian Lara's 400 n.o at Antigua in 2004 in 4th test v England (lost)

4.Viv Richard's 208 at Melbourne in 3rd test in 1984-85 (won)

5.Sunil Gavaskar 236 not out at Madras in 1983-84 in 5th test v West Indies (lost)

6.Brian Lara 226 v in 3rd test in Adelaide 2005-06.(lost)

7.Dean Jones v West Indies in 5th test at Adelaide in 1984-85.(lost)

8.Ricky Ponting's 197 n.o.v Pakistan at Perth in 1999-2000(won)

9..V.V.S.Laxman 167 in 3rd test v Australia at in 1999-2000(lost)

10.Dilip Vengsarkar 94 at Antigua in 1983 in 5th test (lost)

11.Mohinder Amarnath 120 in Lahore in 1982-83. in 5th test (lost)

12.Gordon greenidge 223 at Old Trafford in 1984.(won)

Placed Viv's innings at the top in a dead rubber at the top because of sheer impact and domination.Lara's statistical achievement has to place him right there.Technically Gavaskar was at his very best when batting in the middle order when scoring his unbeaten 236 against a great attack.Lara's domination was superlative at Melbourne in 2005-06 series when scoring 226..Dean Jones was a class act v West Indies when scoring 216.Vengsarkar's 88 in the Carribean was close to a classic knock.Amarnath was perfection personified against Imran at Lahore 1982-83 after the series was lost .

Cook 250 odd vs Hazelwood and Cummins. He carried the bat I guess.

There really isn't a dead rubber in a test match. All of them are important.

If we (India) lose this test and are 0-2 in the series, I'll still be looking forward to Jo'burg and will be delighted if we go 1-2.
