In recent memory whenever I have seen batsmen approach milestones they tend to put on the breaks and play less risky shots, then go on to celebrate in a grande fashion.

Which batsmen have always put the team first?

Which batsmen are completely unassociated with the "nervous nineties" term?

Hussey used to be one alongwith Graeme Smith

These days I can see Steve Smith and Virat Kohli

Umar Akmal, he selflessly gave his spot in the side for up and coming Haris Sohail.

iirc Sehwag was in 90s or 190s once and he refused to take singles at the start of the over because he was playing with the tailender.

That's not selfless, it's just plain dumb

It's a fine line

Sahibzada Mohammad Shahid Khan Afridi... no doubt!! By far, the most selfless man to ever bat in the cricketing world. Such a humble and team-playing character. Pakistan will take a millennium to find a player like him.

:afridi1 :afridi2

It has to be Dhoni. If he batted at no 3/4 he would've ended his career with at least 30 odi centuries. But he decided to batted way below considering his team's requirements.

Shoaib Malik

I think he has batted at every position. He batted at #3 when the likes of Inzimam and Yousuf chickened out from that batting position.

I just don't know why people are ignoring Shahid Afridi.... and honoring Tuk Tuk, and some sub-boderline-mild-average selfish indians whose lifes only depended on getting centuries, and NOT helping their team win..... There is NO ONE who comes close to the true team-player, fighter, match-winner Afridi was for his team... he was one the best and legendary cricketers in history.. He is one of the main reason for rise in popularity of cricket in Pakistan.. he HAS just SO much to his name..

What a Gem :14: :)) :))

I don't know if you really mean it, or just joking, or making a bad attempt at sarcasm... As a cricket enthusiast, you just can't ignore the fact that Shahid Afridi was one the best cricketers in history.
Period.

Look at Lala... stats prove it. Strike rate.. he ever won't let you down with slow strike rate, even when the team is 70/5.

Most of the Australian batsmen. From other sides one comes to mind is Dhoni.

iirc Sehwag was in 90s or 190s once and he refused to take singles at the start of the over because he was playing with the tailender.

That was in SL in 2008. India went on win the the test and Sehwag did get his double.

Every good batsman has to be selfish while batting. Otherwise, they are not very good at what they do. Same goes with strikers in soccer.

All great batsmen are selfish but some showed more selflessness than others:

Gilchrist: Walked in a WC match ( though this can be seen as selfish in a way since he actually put his own beliefs above the team's success)

Inzi was very unselfish... played with tailenders well and would shield them instead of trying to remain not out to protect his average

Dravid- Repeatedly stepped up to open whenever one of the openers got injured/dropped, agreed to keep wickets in ODIs to help the team's batting depth and never played for red ink like Chanderpaul

For Pakistan; Malik
For Bangladesh; Mushfiqur, Shakib

Rest of the teams have more than a few in the team.

Williamson has thrown multiple centuries away looking to force the pace.

Dhoni , Dravid and Virat from India

Most non SC bastmen dont play for personal milestones , barring a few exceptions

Most batsmen don't play for their personal milestones.

Lol at people mentioning Dhoni. He is so selfless that he lets other batsmen take more risks to increase the run rate, only to try to hit a six off the last ball after pacing his innings at a below par strike whole match.

Everyone is or in other words should be selfish to an extent. They have to be selfish to try to score 100 in every match and don't throw their wickets away. If you aren't, you get people like Afridi, who "selflessly" tries to hit the very first ball he faces for a six. That's not selfless but just plain dumbness and recklessness.

Shahid Afridi, he never hangs around and just goes for it; always loved his intent. We never have a RR issue when boom boom is at the crease, he's S/R is a vindication of this Big Mac By far the most selfless pakistani batsman I've had the pleasure to witness in his prime

Sachin Tendulkar, every single run he has scored for his country was very selfless

People are forgetting that Shahid Afridi never played as a low strike rate 'accumulator'.. he's won you matches MANY times... it's hard to blame him or ridicule his batting when your top order gets bundled 70/5.. he is the one who gives 100% for the game.. he is NEVER looking for century or half century by taking singles/run a ball, even if 10 overs are left... he is always looking to hit sixes to take his team to highest score...

Wasn't it the semi final match that Gilly walked on?

As much as I commend his cricketing spirit but wow, at a knockout match for someone to do that, I wonder what his teammates thought back in the dressing room, or the Australian public had the team lost by a small margin.

Umar akmal is one selfless batsman if he would have been someone like hafeez he would have scored many fifites. He just don't have brain to be selfish.

Alex Hales.

That's actually a very good call. I have never seen Hales slow down for his hundred. He could have easily scored on yesterday but he continued to attack.

Very underrated player.

Badrinath if you'd watch IPL. Had amazing capability to get out at right time after having anchored. :)))

In cricket, there can't be any selfless players. There aren't players like Park Ji Sung like when he was at Man Utd. A workhorse who never focused on personal goals, and we don't have such players in cricket. It's all stats here, batting and bowling averages are so much important.

From whatever little I have seen of him, Kedar Jadhav looks quite selfless too.

Lala Afridi - never, ever played a single ball for stats. Even his 0 (1)'s were to save balls for other players.

Afridi never cared about trying to hit milestones, his main aim was to score as much as he can as quick as possible which is probably the most needed thing needed by a batting side.

There is no selflessness if you are scoring 20 odd of 8 balls and then throw your wicket if the situation needs you to play anchor-ship role.

I believe he is selfish. He only played according to his style no matter the match situations.

A lot of times Pakistan required Afridi to play sensibly and rotate the strike instead of playing risky lofted hits and yet he continued to bash balls left and right getting out in 20s-30s.

He is probably the most selfish player too because he knew that the majority of the Pakistani public only wanted to see big hits, so he played for sponsorship and popularity instead for the team.

In before someone say Kane's SR is slow then Kohli, Maxwell, Afridi, xyz etc then please SR doesnt always tell about selflessness or not. It has to do with ability too. Kane has single handedly carried NZ's side without caring about personal milestones. You just haveto watch more of NZ's matches. Top guy and a true team player.

Azhar's pretty selfless despite being limited and he can't be faulted for that as he's not a natural batsman.
