Judging pre-war players by a few Youtube clips is garbage thinking.

Pitches and style of bowling was different and required different balance at the crease compared to truer pitches and faster bowling of later years.

Gavasker was a horrible ODI player. That is why. I looked at every format that a batsman played during his career to make this list.

Why Sobers below Chappell and Gavaskar ?To me just a whisker behind Tendulkar and Lara.Anyway excellent ranking of modern greats and done justice to Chappell rating him above sporting and Border.

Sobers played in an era of easier bowlers(late 50s and 60s) compared to chapell and gavaskar who played in the most difficult era.

My top 10 in tentative order of merit.

1.Jack Hobbs
2.Sachin Tendulkar
3.Don Bradman
4.Viv Richards
5.Brian Lara
6.Garfield Sobers
7.Walter Hammond
8.Sunil Gavaskar/Len Hutton
10.Barry Richards

Hobbs at 1 because of ascendancy for such a prolonged period conquering the worst tracks and overshadowing Bradman on wet pitches or bad wickets.Tendulkar for longevity at top in test and O.D.I.cricket and facing pressure no batting great ever did.Bradman statistically was like a creature from another planet but did not face the oposition or pressure Sachin did.Agre overal itis very controversial or debatable nut gad envisaging Bradman surpass Tendulkar in the modern era or eclipsing Hobbs in previous era.In terms of sheer talent Viv and Lara were ahead of all the top 3 and at their best were better than anybody.Hammond in another era would have been ranked in the class of a Tendulkar and could eclipse even the Don in bad conditions.Gavaskar and Hutton were an epitome of consistency against great bowling and chosen because they were opening batsmen.

Here I have considered O.D.I.and 1st class cricket .My views are similar to Geoff Boycott's on Hobbs. In only test cricket Bradman would be certainly at the top followed by Lara ,Tendulkar and Sobers in that order.Combining tests and O.D.I.Viv Overshadows Lara and Sobers. At his peak he was 2nd to only Bradman. No great was better than Lara playing the role of a lone crusader in turning a game or compiling mammoth scores that too at a breathtaking scoring rate. The likes of Greg Chappell,Everton Weekes,Alan Border,Javed Miandad and George Headley missed out by just a whisker.Placed Barry considering his outstanding WSC statistics and his superlative scores in 1st class cricket. In WSC Barry was almost an equal of Viv Richards.

Like PP viewers reaction to my tentative placing of Hobbs and Sachin and including Barry.
