Andre Nel

The South African cricketer had a heating banter with S Sreesanth way back in 2006 in a game between India and South Africa. Andre Nel continuously peppered him with fiery bouncers as the Indian pacer answered him with his bat.

Sreesanth smashed a boundary at the long-off region and also started annoying him by dancing on the field. After the end of the game, Andre Nel had to face a lot of criticism for having heated banter with the Indian pacer.

Shahid Afridi

We all know what he has said about India but then sometimes he says that he is many fans in India as well!

Andrew Symonds

One of his famous instances came during the Test series between India and Australia in 2007-08 where he had involved in a Monkey-gate scandal with Harbhajan Singh.

During the series, a plethora of Australian cricketers stated that Harbhajan Singh called Andrew Symonds as Monkey. Then it was cleared by the Indian cricketers as the off-spinner used a word from local slang but it abused the Australian all-rounder as fans started to troll him on the social media platform.

Javed Miandad

Thorn in India's side during his playing days and also an outspoken critic of India in recent times - cannot see many people like him now - especially amongst the younger gen.

Sarfaraz Ahmed

In an interview with Samaa TV, the wicket-keeper batsman claimed that "It’s always Pakistan who have come forward to play with India and they should respond positively.

Perhaps India are afraid of facing Pakistan which is why they don’t play against us. It’s always fun to play in a match against India. We will try to win against India in the Champions Trophy but the main thing is for the team to fight for success against all teams".

any Sarf fans in India?

Mushfiqur Rahim

Not best known for his behaviour but seems to have some extra stuff to say on India as he did after they lost the semi-final against West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2016.

He posted a tweet after the game and captioned it with "Happiness is this….!!!!!! #ha ha ha..!!!! India lost in the semifinal.. ????????????" and also posted a picture on Facebook with the captions "Happiness is this…. Now I can sleep much better ???????????????? Windies you beauty!!!!."

He deleted that tweet later.

Andrew Flintoff

The Flintoff shirt incident when England defeated Indian at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and took off his shirt - Sourav Ganguly did the same during the Natwest series final against England as he took off his shirt when Indians beat the hosts at Lord's. So no love lost there and maybe some India fans still remember that as an act of defiance in answer to that of a bully.

Greg Chappell

Disliked by the Indian fans for his poor stint with the Indian team. Back in the 2007 World Cup, Greg Chappell was the head coach of the Indian team which was led by Sourav Ganguly.

It appears that everyone in the team felt uncomfortable during his period that's also been written by Sachin Tendulkar in the autobiography.

Steve Smith

Seems reason for dislike is not anything he has said to the Indian players but the fact that the right-hander always performs well against the Indian team across all aspects of the game!

Ricky Ponting

His fabulous hundred in the 2003 ICC World Cup shattered the hearts of the Indian fans as they lost the finals at Johannesburg in South Africa.

Could be the way he carried himself on the field

Imran Khan

He may have been the talk of the town when he played in India but nowadays he is persona non grata in many Indian minds due to his political views and what he says about talent being more in Pakistan than India.

Steve Smith

This is so true. Not to mention the insecurity among Kohli fans in particular since Smith is almost always the standout performer in every India-Australia series above Kohli (not to mention Smith being the best batsman of this generation).

Obviously can't be anything else since Warner has a MUCH bigger history of bad behavior and cheating than Smith and yet he is adored in India.

In my opinion, it used to be Punter growing up.

Mainly because he had that natural aggression and ego of an Australian cricketer on the field and he almost always smashed us whenever we met.

I don't think any Pakistani cricketer was particularly hated growing up.

Since the IPL began, any animosity toward foreign players has dimmed.

Javed Miandad, its not even close.

Shahid Afridi has huge fan base in India.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, Andrew Nel are no name players in India.

Sarfaraz shouldn’t be on the list. You could add Hasan Ali instead. JM is a strong contender, for obvious reasons but Greg beats him imo.

IK.

Not as a cricketer though. But since the name is there in the list, it should be counted.

I dont think any cricketer has been hated for a prolonged period of time. Even Andrew Symonds was accepted by the fans of his franchise in the IPL just months after "Monkeygate".

Most loved Pakistani cricketer in India is Misbah by a distance. We are eternally grateful for his gifts to Inida leading to two world titles in 2007 and 2011.

Despite IK's rant on Twitter, he is not hated in India rathet still has quite a fan following.

His rants are treated more like a comic relief.

Shahid Afridi has huge fan following in India.

The most hated cricketer is probably Imran Khan because of his talent nonsense in his speech.

Babar has always failed against India. I think they probably love him because he always helps them win more easily against Pakistan.

I know you will come up with the argument that there is no reason for them to be insecure because he is at the level of karun nair, rahul, Aggarwal etc but it is a fact that Indian fans (most of them) can’t handle his success as they jump on his failures and find it hard to praise him for his achievements. They are Insecure.

Pointing would have been the most hated cricketer in India since the turn of the century - killing India in the WC final, general obnoxious behavior on the field on the field and of course for his part in the Bucknor-gate when he ruled Ganguly out for the clearest bump ball ever.

Most common Indian fans probably don't know who babar Azam is. Here Indian fans know because of PP.

Yeah, Babar needs a strong Asia Cup/WT20 to get into the public consciousness over here. He's hardly an Inzamam.

Yes they must be insecure that the best batsman of Pakistan, whom Pakistani fans compare to Kohli, is at the level of their supporting batsman and has only 1 Test hundred outside Asia so far.

Kohli is far better than batsman Pakistan has ever produced and ever will produce, trust me, the Indian fans have nothing to be insecure about as far as Pakistan and Babar are concerned.

Most Indians don't give a damn about Andre Nel. Most don't give a damn about that disgraced and arrogant piece of *** Sreesanth either.

Shahid Afridi has a lot of fans in India, but he has alienated some of them with his recent political utterings on Kashmir.

I'm sure most Indians have forgiven Andrew Symonds. He also played in IPL after the monkeygate incident. Even Harbhajan is now slowly fading from public memory.

Miandad: Yes, he was the pet hate during his time, but that did not stop the Bangalore crowd from giving him a standing ovation when he played his last game there. Most Indian cricket fans still admire the guy.

Srfaraz, Mishfiqur, Symonds: Flashes in the pan. Most people have forgotten about what they said or did.

Greg Chappell: The Indian team hated him when he was their coach, but I doubt that hatred spread out into the fans.

Imran Khan: He was loved and admired as a cricketer, and still is. But a lot of his Indian fans have now turned against him because of his statements against India.

I wonder if Aamer Sohail should be included in MenInG 's list?

If Venkatesh Prasad is still remembered for anything, it is for clean bowling Aamer after his taunt.

I wouldn't say "hate" but tough call between Imran Khan and Mushfiqur Rahim. :)

Joe Root gets no love...maybe because he outshone Kohli in a couple of h2h ODI series and in ICC tournaments.

If you go by Social media as a survey tool, pakistanis would be toppers.
If you go by genuine fans (by genuine I mean who have no political dog), you would find maybe Ricky Ponting. Smith and Symmonds are liked in India.

This is true. If you're purely talking about cricket, it would be Ricky Ponting.

IK and Afridi weren't hated that much during their playing careers. In fact both had a lot of fans in India during their careers. They are probably hated more now than anybody else because of political comments they make.

During 90s, Afridi was the most loved Pakistani cricketer in India

To be honest, at a personal level, I don't think anyone in the list is "hated" by Indian fans - Let me go through your list

In the order you provided
 • Andre Nel - Too brief a career to cause any lasting grief. Heck, I had completely forgotten about him until I saw your list
 • Shahid Afridi - Huge fan base in India
 • Andrew Symonds - Only die hard Tendulkar/Bhajji fans hate him and that is firmly a small minority. There is a good % of people (like me) who believe he was unfairly targeted in Monkeygate
 • Javed Miandad - Even grudgingly admired by most although we (old) fans hate him for that six in Sharjah.
 • Sarfaraz Ahmed - Who? Non entity
 • Mushfiqur Rahim - Dinesh Karthik already gave a very fitting reply. Too small a player to merit collective hate
 • Andrew Flintoff - Maybe hated by Bengali fans. Otherwise no
 • Greg Chapell - I dont like him because he was incompetent but I am not likely to spit on his face if I bump into him in an airport
 • Steve Smith - Huge huge fan base
 • Ricky Ponting - Similar one - huge huge fan base
 • Imran Khan - Are you kidding? why would we hate him? He was a hero for many whilst growing up

The one person associated with cricket that I have come close to "hating" is Steve Bucknor. I can't help wonder whether he inherited a "I am superior" colonial mindset and appears to take the role of "I need to discipline these lowly Indians" - he potentially has come across multiple times as a racist (against Indians only) - so there, he is the only person I will never be a fan of.

No Indian cricketer is actually disliked like that

In fact players who do well against India are actually more popular - no way Indians dislike Rickey Ponting or Steve Smith bcoz they scored heavly against us

Regarding Imran Khan - most younger generations in India never really saw him play. So they don't really care about him so much. Most see him as just another Pakistani leader like Bhuttos & Nawaz Sharif who does what a Pakistan PM is expected to do. Sometimes his twitter rants do cause some irritation & bad blood among Indians but thats about it . Its the BJP trolls who are more obsessed with all that twitter stuff

Wasim Akram & Shoaib Akhtar are far more popular as cricketers. Afridi is another guy who is quite popular. He makes anti India statements now & then but most people here see it as part of his eccentric nature

Andrew Flintoff , Rickey Ponting & Steve SMith are actually very popular in India. Flintoff & KP are probably the 2 most popular England cricketers in India in their time

Sarfraz Ahmed & Mushfiqur - most Indians wont know him that well ( outside hardcore fans )

Asoka de Silva & Steve Bucknor caused serious grief to Indian fans

I think Mushfiqur is probably the most hated cricketer currently in India because of his antics on and off field.

Andre Nel, although irrelevant, was a big time psycho.

As for my pick, it has to be Javed Miandad during his playing days. He could annoy even the most sane minds.

Andrew Flintoff , Rickey Ponting & Steve SMith are actually very popular in India. Flintoff & KP are probably the 2 most popular England cricketers in India in their time

Second this.

David Warner is adored in Telugu states as he plays for sunrisers and he posts many tweets dancing to famous Telugu songs.

I personally hated Ricky Ponting for his graceless behavior after the matches.

Actually Miandad was never really hated during his playing days

Of course many people know of his family ties with Dawood Ibrahim

the moral of the story is, people don't hate a player for any sporting reasons. Sometimes they may feel disgusted but as time moves on, people move on too (pointing, smith etc).

IK falls under a different bracket for his hatred.

Andre Nel
Not hated at all. Even back then we knew Andre Nel was just a psycho and the aggression always seemed funnier rather than malicious. I kind of miss his spells.

Shahid Afridi
Not hated but was feared to death when he played because of how predictably explosive he was. He's hated more now as a political commentator, just like Miandad.

Andrew Symonds
Noted hated as much as Ponting. He was an arrogant ***** but the court controversy is all Ponting's doing. He should have managed Symonds better.

Javed Miandad
Can't comment because he belonged to my father's era but i can imagine him being hated for his guys kind of like Gautam Gambhir (of course many times better)

Sarfaraz Ahmed
He is a chhotu. I don't even think an average Indian considers him or that mediocre Aussie test captain as even cricketers. They are as good as they don't exist. No one talks about them. Sarfraz is sometimes a meme material for being fat and that's about it

Mushfiqur Rahim
Thank you. We finally found a hated cricketer from a hated cricket team. Yes , of course. Him and their pseudo fast bowlers and their Under 19 team. All that hyperactivity, all that fake bravado. Hate it but not obsessed because we are still talking about a minnow at the end of the day

Andrew Flintoff
Admired. Not hated at all. Hated his guts maybe. But everyone wishes for a player like that.

Greg Chappell
He lost his respect. Insane guy.

Steve Smith
He's a cute puppy.

Ricky Ponting
By far the most hated cricketer in India during his time but a legend of course.

Imran Khan
Father's era cricketer

Most hated cricketers in India in my opinion during their playing days:-

Shoaib Akhtar - You want to adore that guy but he don't care. He don't give a damn. He just wants to play the bad guy like always :akhtar. LEGEND

Ricky Ponting - Obnoxious competitor.. Absolutely hated his guts and arrogance

Sky Sports commentary team during 2011-Mid 2015s. They are now back to being humble after numerous thrashings outside England

The above are stand out

Rest are all wannabe

IK falls under a different bracket for his hatred.

I often see stuff from Pakistani posters that Miandad is hated in India bcoz he hit that last ball 6 in 1986

Well most cricket fans in India today were not even born in 1986 - let alone see that man play !

Andre Nel was a strange character.

How he got away with the stuff he did was beyond me - nowadays he'd spend more time banned than actually out on the field.

The thread isn't about Kohli vs Smith or how well-known Shamsi is. Please try to stick to the topic.

I dont think any cricketer has been hated for a prolonged period of time. Even Andrew Symonds was accepted by the fans of his franchise in the IPL just months after "Monkeygate".

From that list probably only Rahim we dont like much as a cricketer..

Ponting or Symonds, the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (SCG test, Monkeygate) left a bad taste in everyone's mouth in Indian cricket community. Australians back then were thuggish, proper bullies, present Aussie cricketers, mediapersons, fans are angels in comparison.

Cricketer Imran Khan was adored in India, even used to appear on ads of Indian products like Godrej's Cinthol soap. My father said that there were even a few cartoons about him and Sunny in some Tamil magazine in the 80s.

Afridi has many fans, he is popular especially among females for his silky, smooth hair perhaps :afridi

Having said that of late there is more online hate directed towards them because of their politics related comments.

Inzi and Shoaib Malik are pretty popular in India. But Wasim Akram is on a different plane, I am sure majority Indians will have him among their top 3 favorite non-Indian cricketers of all time. Even in my family I see him get so much respect, just like Sachin or Kapil.

There is a love-hate relationship with Miandad. Many hate him for his links with Dawood Ibrahim (gangster and 1993 blasts mastermind), for turning the tide of Indo-Pak rivalry with that 6 in Sharjah. But then we admire him for being such a dedicated team man and streetfighter. His fighting spirit was unparalleled, never over as long as he was in the middle.

Even that Hindutva don of Mumbai, Bal Thackeray admired Javed. Once invited him to his home and praised him before the media.

There a strong correlation between how that player is perceived with regards to playing the sport within the spirit of the game, and how disliked he is. Players are rarely disliked based on how they performed against the home team. For if this were the standard, the most disliked players ought to be Andy Flower, Gary Kirsten, Matthew Hayden and Shivnarriane Chanderpaul.

However, this is far from true. Maybe Hayden is right up there in the ranks of the most disliked because of his close association with Ricky Ponting, who is certainly perceived to have played the sport well beyond the spirit of the game.

Thus, based on the above, the most disliked players are likely Waqar Younis and Imran Khan, for their perceived ball tampering antics. Wasim Akram would probably make the list too but his regular presence in the commentary box and his general approachability has earned him a reprive.

Beyond those two, the next is Ricky Ponting.

In recent times I would have said Hassan for his wagah border exploits but I guess since then life has come a full circle for him after Asia cup and World Cup games. Seems to have mellowed down a lot but has been in red hot form recently so never say never again.

From outside of Pakistan: tough to pick because everyone is so nice to India these days including Pakistan ex cricketers and even the current lot seem to get along well :)

Michael Holding might have a case for dissing IPl. Personally love Holding and respect for taking a stand because I think he hates all T20 cricket but obviously IPl is kind of the benchmark for T20 like it or not.

Forgot Mushfiqur who might have a strong case but again he comes across as a guy who is obnoxious on the field but a decent guy off of it.

Can’t think of too many these days because regardless of how people feel personally they suck up to India.
