That would be Bumrah. He was the only one who could get wickets with both new and old ball in all formats.

None of the other bowlers are effective with the old ball. Some get slaughtered if the pitch is not giving any assistance.

Bumrah. Rest all are average to below average by world standards.

Not a single one of them have a world class average and strike rate apart from Bumrah. Shameful, actually.

Even Siraj is looking fine (need to play more matches to get into this list). We can also observe that Mohammed Shami has the next best average, but I do not agree that he is a better bowler than Kapil Dev, Srinath & Zaheer Khan. Even Bumrah has so much fitness issues. I am doubting if he ends up being Shane Bond of India (not even Akther or Brett Lee level - even these two had injury issues but made better impact!)

We can still consider Kapil Dev, Srinath and Zaheer as premier fast bowlers from India because they have some kind of longevity to show up! They did possess some ATG skills (every bowler/player has some weaknesses too). Only thing is they don't have the attractive overall stats to show up! There are many reasons for this.

1) Kapil & Srinath for most part of their career had to be the sole fast bowler in the lineup without much support...
2) They played lot of their test matches in India (Srinath actually missed a few home test matches in the early part of his career).
3) Captains in the past never felt the need to force "Fast Bowling" as the strength, never preferred to develop fast bowling culture. Always thought our strength is only spin bowling, attacked with spin at home and went completely defensive overseas.

All these factors affected these bowlers and so whatever they have achieved with this little space has to be appreciated!

It is only after Ganguly that we started to see fast bowling seriously! In the Kohli era we redefined fast bowling culture even more by going one step (actually several steps ahead!) by converting "fast bowling" as one of the strength in "test matches played in India"! Our fast bowlers have comfortably out-bowled the opposition team bowlers in Indian Test matches!

If Kapil, Srinath, Zaheer (even Pathan, Agarkar, etc.) belonged to this era I am sure they would have achieved a lot better with better stats and they would have got a better bowling unit/support! Even Ishant, Umesh, Shami, etc, would have had even impressive stats if they started exactly in Kohli's era (instead of their first half of the career going under Dhoni)

Shane Warne (being such a great spinner) never had success in India and Srinath (being accused as a one-dimensional fast bowler) was lethal in Test Matches played in India tells us something about the pitches (so-called spin paradise) in India and how one should groom & utilize the resources available in hand...! (Indian dismal performance in tests in 80s, 90s is due to this - thinking negatively & defensively!)

Quality wise Bumrah stands out but if we look at overall career Shami is the best Indian pacer. Shami has almost 150 more wickets than Bumrah in ODIs and Tests.

Kapil was decent but his Test bowling average is way too high for him to be the best.

Siraj could've been a contender if he was 5-6 years younger.

It has to be Bumrah, even though his career was short lived. In fact, he is the best ever test seamer from Sub Continent. An avg of 21 in modern day cricket, helping India winning multiple test series in SENA is stuff of greatness.

True Legend

Bumrah and it's not even close. Not a single Indian pacer aside from Bumrah even qualify for ATG bowler discussion, let alone being one,

Shami and Kapil Dev are good/great bowlers, but that's about it. Bumrah is 2 tiers above them.

Enjoying the arrogance & mirth that the above table is generating with the comments. Yes, granted compared to several world beaters this list stands little to no chance....but then it's not that a particular team and its suppporters claiming to be the true bastion of phaast bowling are ruling the roost or are dripping and over loaded with talent to make the top 10 and finals of every finals that was invented. Or have done since the century turned. or did for a long time in the last century. I'd say we are headed in the right direction and the time is not far when we have several genuine good quicks.

Kapil is definitely world class. 434 test wickets is not a joke considering the great performance in Windies.

Indian board had the habbit of treated bowler with any pace like garbage. What they did to Ramakant Desai nothing short of criminal. Pre 70's India barely won matches abroad because of it. Spinners could only do so much during that time. Things have improved quite a bit now.
I remember making a thread regarding sub 25 average test bowlers few years and there were 0 Indian bowler . Best was Bedi at 28. Now there are 6 bowlers over Bedi (min 50 wickets). After following cricket for over 40 years i have never seen such improvement in bowling quality like i did with Indian bowling in last few years. So i am optimistic.

Kapil - 7.5( as bowler)
Srinath - 6.5
Zaheer - 6.5
Shami - 7
Bumrah - 8( 9 if injury free)

All format stats are pretty ridiculous to be fair and not much relevance can be extrapolated from it.
However, there's some interesting discussion happening if Bumrah is 8 or 9 or 9.5 and for his exquisite imaginary performances through all of his off-field career.

It will be good to see a Bumrah vs Shoaib thread and how our Indian brethren will claim Bumrah is better.

There can be nothing much gleaned from this all format list, is it possible to get format wise details?

Both India and England( in last 50 years) have underachieved in terms of producing quality fast bowlers but they have still managed to produce some quality pacers so I don't see any point for posters demeaning them.

Yeah, this happen when people see everything with stats lens, that can be effected because of multiple reasons as mentioned by fellow poster Ramlakhan , You see a quality cricketer playing and you know straight away , you dont need stat microscope for it, India has produced 3 good bowlers post 2000s in Bumrah , Zaheer and Shami, and atleast 3 with potential to be good but mismanaged:Sreesanth , irfan and Agarkar.

It's amazing ,how good is Shami .If Shami can somehow manage 300 wickets , he will go down as a very very good bowler and indian great.Mind his own business and get the work done type of guy.

He won't get to 300 wickets, that's the problem. Just track how long it has taken for him to pick his last 70 wickets and you will get an answer.

21 matches and almost 4 years with an average of 26.

There is still hope.

I’m still taking Kapil Dev but my word Bumrah is pure magic when in form.

Srisanth yes!! I think the most talented fast bowlers to come post 2000s, even better than zaheer, but destroyed himself with his antics and fake over aggression.

I have been watching cricket for about 3 decades and in these 3 decades I would pick these 3 bowlers.

  1. Javagal Srinath
  2. Zaheer Khan
  3. Jasprit Bumrah

It’s not even a Contest forget India I think Bumrah will go down as the greatest bowlers of all time
