Who is the greatest cricketer to never win an ICC trophy?

Champions trophy 2004
Oh never mind, I thought this was talking about just the World Cup.

I want to then say Kallis. or did he win one too? I think he did the very first ICC Knockout Cup if I am not mistaken.

one of the GOAT low scoring thrillers!! I remember that game well.

I would say Mohammed Rizwan ( so far) but he has plenty of time. I think he will win this time and surprass Dhoni and Gilly and become the GOAT wicket keeper batsmen
Mohammad Rizwan is the greatest cricketer to not win a World Cup?

Did I just read that or you meant Mohammad Yousuf? Was it a typo?

Quite a few actually - Lara, Curtley Ambrose, Waqar Younis, Ganguly, Kallis, Saqlain. I am talking about cricketers who have exceptional ODI records and were absolute best in their roles.

Kallis won 1998 CT.

Lara won 2004 CT.

Ooooh ... great thread OP.

Obvious answers are ofcourse ABD , Steyn, Amla etc...

It's really hard to think of a top cricketing country that hasn't won an ICC trophy in a significant period of time so it's difficult to pin point such players.

Jasprit Bumrah is half way through though.. :apology

AB
Waqar
Hadlee
Botham
Donald
Saqlain
Anwar
Ambrose
Walsh
Steyn
Yousuf
Akhter
Greg Chappell
Lillee
Shakib
Azhar
I am pretty sure I have forgotten minimum another dozen names. But you can make a decent squad with the names I mentioned.

What about Shoaib Akhtar!

Serial chokers when it’s a icc ko game

Good for bilateral bashings.
exactly my thinking too. cant call yourself great if you constantly choke when it matters.
if its just a one off or twice thats fine. but multiple times across formats?

atleast the south africans were ranked number 1 in tests for a few years and that means as much as winning the world cup.

Also, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla have won test series in England and Australia and drawn in India.

It is a kind of feat that all time greats like Tendulkar, Lara, Dravid, Sangakkara, Imran, Wasim, Kapil haven't achieved.

yea their test status elevates them. much easier to bomb out in one off games but in tests to win a proper series is much more difficult.

look at the calibre of batsmen they have had in those years. People say bowling wins you games. no doubt. It absolutely does but if your batting is so good from number 1 to 7 8 etc, your bowlers also benefit from additional rest, recuperate quicker and are able to bowl with full intensity once they resume to bowl. This benefit goes unnoticed.

Shakib will be the only cricketer left from the names mentioned so far to not only not win anything himself but his country also not winning anything

Sarcasm, right?

I don't think that DOn Bradman has won any ICC trophy.
For me, it will be Viv Richard, the beast of a player.
Viv Richards was a key player in West Indies’ 1975 and 1979 World Cup triumphs with a match winning 138 runs in the 1979 finals.

And it doesn’t matter at all that ODIs and T20s were not played during Bradman’s time nor was there anything called WTC!! LOL @ people taking some names from so far back in history!

Defo ab de Villiers, Goat player, Mr 360. Never seen a player like him tbh. Bowlers would literally fear him, he gave that viv Richards vibe whenever he walked on.

I wish he had one title under his belt but alas tis not to be.

Wait rizwan is the greatest? Over de Villiers 😂.

Was joking about Riz lol

ABDV is an IPL bully. Only really seen him smash the Windies otherwise.
Uhhhhh bro

This is ab de Villiers record in odi against top teams excluding minnows

Australia: average 59 Sr 99 matches 26
Bangladesh: Average 81 SR 108 matches 9
England: Average 37 SR 86 matches 29
India: Average 48 SR 111 matches 32
New Zealand: Average 61 SR 97 matches 25
Pakistan: Average 59 SR 91 matches 32
Sri lanka: Average 51 Sr 102 matches 23
West indies: Average 67 SR 110 matches 24

His overall career Average 53 SR 101.

Like I wouldn't call that a West indies basher my dude. He's only really somewhat poor against England but even then he averaged 37 with a 86 strike rate.

He's top quality against all top teams in the world.

I excluded his statistics against minnows cause its even higher if you include them lol.

Ab de Villiers is the finest player that I've personally witnessed watching live. That's kinda disrespectful if you've relegated him to just a minnow basher and IPL Bully.

ABD was a Pakistan-Windies-Australia basher mostly during his career.

Since Pakistan and Windies were minnows in pre-Babar era, ABD's only performances were vs Australia of note.

His performance vs India in 2015 series win doesn't count as Bumrah, Siraj and Kuldeep were missing and the pitches were mostly flat except the 4th ODI.

There are many that have already been mentioned, but I want to call out two lovely gentlemen who never won and I want to point at them and laugh because of their bitterness!

Botham and Lamb

He played 32 matches against India, averaged 48 with a Sr of 111 against them.

His record against every team is good, irrespective of whatever 2nd string non sense people may pull.

These averages and SR is something that is impossible to achieve for all of our pakistani batsmen even if we were playing against Canada.

As for other top quality batsmen, no one bashes quality bowling because players like bumrah, Stark don't bowl pies. You gotta respect quality bowling.

Not even ATG's can go after quality bowling, most players capitalise by taking singles, rotating strike and if bunrah or stark occasionally make a mistake then capitalising. Amd obviously if the bowling is horrible then making the opposition's life a living nightmare.

Kohli against quality opposition scored a match losing 50 of 42 in the t20 world cup against England, its difficult for any players to play against quality bowling lol.

Thing is AB would feast on 2nd string bowling and 1st string sides were scared of bowling bad balls against him or making a mistake knowing full well devilliers would punish them.

Here we have players like babar scoring 80 9f 84 and getting outperformed by ravindra even though darly mitchel is bowling.

Don't take credit away from AB, he's a legendary bat and his record speaks for itself. Godly cricketer and an ATG, deserves full praise for all his work.

dint ab tonk bumrah at times in ipl too. i know ipl is not odi but still.
i agree indian attack is world class now and AB may or may not have had trouble.

depends on how ab performed in world cup events. i am positive ab's average exceeds kohli and many others in world cup events.

one of the best batsmen i have ever seen. complete player.

Yes he did. You don't need to defend ABD, I have seen and followed him more than most on this forum because he was my favourite player from 2008 to 2018. His ODI and test career have been nothing short of legendary.

His only failures were in T20 internationals( for his standards ) and World T20 tournaments. In ODI World Cup, he has one of the best records for a batsman.

No doubt. Much better than kalis in odi. Will say kalis is superior in tests although ab performed much better vs stronger sides.

Steyn had opportunity but choked against Grant Elliot in 2015 SF in that final over.
ABD had a chance in 2011 QF, chasing a low target against NZ, but couldn't get his team over finish line.
Kallis had multiple opportunities but fluffed in so many knock outs.

What did David win?

The greatest cricketer to have never won an ICC tournament has to be none other than Waqar Younis.

He got unlucky to have missed out due to being injured a few times but then he had a fair shot at it a few times and blew it

I don’t think people who started watching cricket in 2000s and despite having heard the commentary, and all the praises from cricket experts would still ever realise how big of an ODI bowler Waqar Younis was back in the day. Arguably the best ever. Better than Wasim, Imran in his prime. To have no ICC tournament for someone who lays a very strong claim to being one of the GOAT ODI cricketers is just sad.

PS, Waqar bhai is eating ABD alive in the 1990s , what are you talking about. Middle stump knocked out and toe breakers is all we’re seeing.

i think kane wiliamson is the one who really deseves to win a title.

Hopefully this time he will break the barriers.

Not really a great, but shoaib akhtar.

For all the talk this guy has done, he never won an icc trophy

Add David Miller to that list. A player that will be remembered in future.
