I remember watching an Indian match where the commentator (it was sunil I think, not sure) said that kohli is the most wristy player he has ever seen play the game after zaheer abbas. The commentator said that they both have/had rubber wrist using which they could maneuver the ball in whichever direction they wanted. In my opinion virat is definitely the wristiest player I have ever seen play and his wrist work is a major contributor towards his success.

Who in your opinion is the most wristy player that has ever played the game/ you have seen play the game?

Virat is definitely the most wristy player of his generation.

However such a thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning this man...

Mohd. Azharuddin.
Gundappa vishwanath.
Vengakurrupu venkat sai laxman.

Kohli has a wrist made of rubber and steel

Past gen - Azhar, VVS n Anwar
Current gen - Kohli

These are the ones I have seen them play live.

Both VVS n Mark Waugh had a unruffled elegance whilst playng with wrist

Actually its pretty hard to become a wristy batsman, you either are one naturally or you aren't

Also arjuna ranatunga was also a very wristy player.Mastered the controlled slash over slips in one dayers

I would guess that the subcontinent produces a lot of wristy players due to the amount of slower and spin bowling they face

Zaheer Abbas for sure. If Azharuddin copied his batting style.

It's in 2 buckets - first bucket has one name, probably forever - Mohammad Azharuddin

2nd bucket might have many names. Apart from obvious, I am surprised to mention one name which probably no one would notice, for a Non Asian player - can anyone recall the wristy flicks of Jaques Kallis through mid-wicket?

Keplar Wessels trolled Gavaskar (Or Shastri?) big time on that once - Kallis was playing brilliantly & flicking at will against Srinath (probably in that Series, SAF was denied a Test win & Polly, one of the best ever All-round game for Match Referee issue) - so,

Sunny/Shastri - "Jaques is flicking brilliantly - do you think, Kallis is been taking few tricks & motivated by Indian players, particularly Tendulkar regarding his wristy play?"

Wessels - "Not really - he is flicking brilliantly indeed, but I believe Jaque Kallis has past that stage to be motivated by someone - he can fix his own tricks"

Joking apart, most Asian players are excellent with their wrist, Gundappa Bishwanath was probably the pioneer of that generation - Sardesai, Gavaskar, Zaheer, Mazid, Dias, Azhar, Saeed, VVS, ST, Sanath, Marvan, Sanga, .......... Virat, Tamim, Mendis.

Outside Asia, Mark, Kallis, Lara, KP ........ actually all great players are better user of their wrist.

Azharuddin and Salim Malik are the two most wristy players I have watched. Kohli does not even come close.

Azharuddin.

Salman Butt was also very wristy when playing on the offside.

Azharuddin easily.

It's one thing to get bat on ball while flicking, but to pick gaps with consistency like he used to was undeniably great.

Wrist work is indicator of batsman's class and elegance...For me VVS Laxman had best wrists followed by Mark Waugh, Azhar ,Saeed...this generation may be Pujara and Kohli , but they are not at past greats' level...Asians seems to be more comfortable at using wrists

Tough to go past Azhar

One pakistani name springs to mind

Salim Malik

The best:

Saeed Anwar
MoYo
Azharuddin

Sorry, nobody comes close.

Virat Kohli. I've never seen someone flick yorkers inside out on the off-side like he does.

Salim Malik was all hands and wrists when batting

His driving esp square of the wicket was very wristy and a treat to watch

Loved it when in death overs he would stand on leg side, exposing all of his 3 stumps to give himself room to play those cover drives.

Amla has better wrists than Kohli. From the past, Anwar, Yousuf, Azhar and Sachin were very wristy.

Amla may have more flexibility since he makes a full circle every time he swings the bat but in my opinion no one every has had the kind of power kohli has in his wrists. There was this shot he played in his century against Australia in Australia where he hit a very full ball outside the off stump over the Fielder standing at mid wicket just by a mere flick of the wrist. The commentator went on to say, "only a few men alive can play that shot", Idk who are the others though. The video was on YouTube but it got deleted.

That wristy shot by Kohli to the offside whether it's a yorker or full toss seems like his signature shot to me. He plays it so well and often too.

Yes, it was an incredible shot. As I mentioned before in some other thread, it is Kohli's signature shot and no other batsman today can mimic it. In yesteryears, I saw Azharuddin play that shot - he regularly used to pick length balls outside the off-stump and hit them over mid-wicket with just a flick of his wrists, but I think Kohli generates more power.

Kohli's wrists are the key to his ability to rotate the strike better than anyone else in the game today. You cannot set fields for a batsman who can has multiple shots for almost every delivery. If it was a packed leg-side field, he would have simply driven that ball through the covers, but since the mid-on was up and there was no protection in the deep, he flicked it over his head for four.

I will go with Azharuddin. He used to regularly place ball in gaps using his wrist. Kallis was pretty good in that as well. Kohli is pretty good in that right now.

I think most Asian batsmen are good with that.

Azharuddin. Amazing wrist work. Could play shots that other batsmen could only dream of playing.

Going out on a limb and I'll say VVS Laxman. Notable mentions to Mark Waugh, Saeed Anwar, Salim Malik, Mohammad Yousuf and Carl Hooper.

Salman butt wasvery wristy. Even his off-drives were based on flick of the wrist

Salim Malik is criminally underrated and few Pakistani batsman if any were as wristy.

I remember him getting bowled on a number of occasions when exposing the stumps to hit on the offside though (but I only watched him in the last stages of his career so maybe it worked better for him earlier).

Man..... Azhar , What a waste...!!:facepalm: Reading all these opinions and the opinions of many commentators & analysts on MANY occasions... This guy could've meant so much more. !

Do you know what game this was? I want to try hunting for the footage/shot?

Lovely. I think my example was better though. Ill just make a thread about the wristiest shot Ive ever seen though

If I recall the 5 wristiest shots I have ever seen, Azharuddin would probably be mentioned twice or thrice. Unfortunately, the footage is not available or very difficult to find.

Is this the wristiest shot a batsman has ever played?

Look at the shot at 7 : 55. Yes he was set but this was still an unbelievable shot

Kohli has more power, Amla has more flexibility, I agree. It's just very rare to see a South African have the wrists that Amla does which is why it stands out a lot more. Just like Sachin's back-foot play stood out because he was an Indian.

Nothing compares to the original Nuclear Flick. :afridi

Most people got it right. Azharuddin and Saeed Anwar are the most wristy batsmen I've ever seen.

Kohli. He was at his best against Australia in the recent WT20. The wrist-work on his shots was supreme, timing even better.

Do you remember the six he hit over long off against Faulkner to that back of a length delivery? My jaw was touching the floor

Yeah, that was simply too good. His back to back inside-out shots through the covers region were a sight to behold. Smith was literally about to cry because of the way he was piercing non-existing gaps.

Hashim Amla and Sangakara.

Amla has weak arms but he makes it up with his wristy shots.

Sangakara is soo natural, guy ends up at 40 runs and you dont even know how.

That is incredible !!
barely any backlift , simply lifted that .

Quinton is also quite wristy. Surprised Amla is mentioned as most wristy saffer but Quinny isn't. Guy regularly flicks massive sixes over deep fine leg and deep square leg.

Kohli is number 1 though.

Moeen too actually is quite wristy.
