Sanath Jayasuriya for unintentional comedy. His commentary thread on here has me in stitches.

My favorite commentator is Sir Rameez Raja.


Honorable mentions to Nasir Hussain, Danny Morrison, Harsh Bogle, Sanjay Manjrekar, Ian Chappel, Ian Bishop, Micheal Holding, and many more.

Ian Chappell. I prefer insights over making noise or being entertaining. Ian Chappell and Richie Benaud has always had the most unbiased insights.

P.S. Not sure whether Chappeli would be unbiased while speaking of his best buddy Botham though

And after him its Danny morrison... i mean u want fun n entertainment along with fair knowledge of cricket and nuetral discussion about match...
If anyone want so much in depth knowledge he should go to bazid khan for home tuition... commentating is about fun n entertainment...one should read books on cricket or listen talk shows on cricket if he is so desperate for cricket boring knowledge...

He is very good because he describes the South Asian aesthetics in cricket the best out of all of the western educated commentators. His hybridity in ethnicity is the key to his excellent understanding of the English and the Asian mindset in cricket

Glad to see Harsha Bhogle in your list. He's one of my fav'te Commentators ever! I adore his Cricketing knowledge and like his sense of homor and wit. There are so many lil gems that he throws randomly at our Indian players to take a dig at and that sarcasm is what entices me the most. Especially something like this "Ashwin has just played 3 shots that no father will ever teach to his child."

All time Favourites: Bumble, Greig, Benaud, Nasser and Athers. Benaud might have been a bit Australia oriented, but he brought some magical touch to the commentary box.

Bumble and Greig, very passionate, old school and just perfect. Still remember Bumbles "It's a leg bye, who cares, Pakistan have won the world cup"

Nasser and Athers are not only good and unbiased commentators, but brilliant analysts of the game as well.

At the moment, I would say Sky Sports panel is the best.

Danny Morrison and Bumble are both entertaining commentators. Like the Sky sports Panel. Some of the Asian commentators are very dull. Agree with certain posters about Hussain and Atherton, they're excellent. Warne is not a great commentator though, he's not dull but says a lot of bizarre stuff.

i really miss the two titans of pakistan urdu commentary - munir hussain (aur out ker diya) and hassan jalil (sun-sunny khaiz muqabala). these two gentlemen bought a completely different vibe to the commentary box compared to their english counterparts. one major difference between the two was that urdu commentators were more partisan and as result, held more sway with average fan. the sense of pain they conveyed after a pakistan loss was genuinely heartfelt. yet they were always respectful of the opposition and did their job with dignity. the english counterparts in comparison were more impartial and aloof. my favourite among them was omar quereshi. got the feeling their was a real sense of camaraderie between players an commentators back them.

from aussies commentators, i miss ian chappel for his insights and tony grieg for willingness to take panga and to call out umpires when they made a mistake. one funny incident i can recall happened when grieg and gavasker were commentating in pak during asian test championship. that mng sarfaraz nawaz had made inflammatory accusations against gavasker. grieg saw sarafarz walking next to the boundary and got him miked up and got gavasker to confront sarfaraz. gavasker was not amused.

i am not one to dwell on nostalgia but commentary was much, much better back then. perhaps sky is the only one that comes close. even tms became unbearable after tufnell. getting rid of boycott was the last straw.

These days Ian Bishop is my favorite. In yesteryears, I really enjoyed the Benaud/Lawry combo. And I actually thought that Lawry was better and more engaging to listen to. He was especially great at calling the big moments.

The only ones where he's slightly off is Ramiz and Nasser, but not massively so.

Not just the voice but the rhythm and sentence flow is spot on. He even gets the regional variations right (Atherton's Lancashire accent/Lara's high pitched Trinidadian accent).
