Whose the best hook in cricket today

I remember growing up watching saeed anwars hook which was imperious
Matt Hayden was also a quality hooker and Sanath too

Nowadays apart from sharjeel Khan and an song Brenda Mcullum there's not too many hook shots of note

Usman Khawaja and Quinton De Kock are both adept at the hook shot.

Sharjeel plays the pull really well but haven't seen him play the hook much. I'd say Devilliers

Not many people play the hook shot in Test cricket (even the aggressive batsman duck against balls that high). In ODI cricket, bowlers can barely bowl over shoulder height so you see a lot of pull shots but you don't see too many hook shots.

Arguably, West Indians Roy Fredricks considered to be the best hooker in the history of cricket. I saw some of his video clips on You Tube and was not surprised why. No helmet and taking on Lillee and others likewise bowler head on.

West Indian batsmen were traditionally the best players of the hook and Aussies the conventional pull shot.

Rohit plays a fantastic hook shot.

Remeber him hooking a fiery MJ (or Starc?) in the world cup semi final with ease. But was then castled by an off cutter.

Dhoni is a good player of hook, virat plays hook pretty well too.

No one does.
The hook stroke has long been abandoned.
The coaching manual teaches kids to leave alone anything above head height as a batsmen has less control of anything above shoulder height. Perhaps justifiably so. The batting unit gets an extra free run just for ducking, as it's called a wide.

The pull is common, but I also can't think of a specialist batsman who is a compulsive puller of the ball.
QdK in ODI's was, but even in that format he's curbed his enthusiasm. Ponting was very very good.
Vernon is the only player i can think of who loves to pull. But he's not a specialist.

Back on topic, the best player of a hook stroke I've seen was Nasser Husain.

Good post. People are confusing the hook and the pull. Iirc Carl Hooper used to play the hook pretty well but generally batsmen avoid play that shot simply because it's a pointless stroke to play.

There's no one better than De Villiers and I'm specifically talking about the hook shot. He was hooking prime Johnson and doing so with ease.

I find it sad that hook shot has been deemed a risky enough shot that coaches have advocated minimizing its use in the begging of an innings.

Was he better than Sir Vivian Richards

I think P'Pers are confusing a pull and a hook

Exactly. Many are suggesting that sharjeel is quite good at the hook shot whereas he just good at the hook shot. The shot he is an expert in is the hybridish pull shot. Hook shot is the one played when the ball is between the chest and the head.

The batsman today are not so good at this particular shot if the bowler is bowling with decent pace. Kohli is the current era batsman you'd consider good at this shot as he showed his skill in Aus against johnson quite a bit. But then again he got in wc semi on the same shot against the same bowler.:misbah Ponting was an absolute beast.

The hook shot is pretty much dead.

Good Observation.

There are still good pullers out but not hookers t same level as they were. It is actually not much of an overestimation to conclude that hook shot has nearly died. It has been over 25 seasons when ICC limited use of the bouncers and in those 25 years bowlers started bowling bouncers less and less and the result is that batsmen even the good ones do not face as many bouncers to score off as they did prior to 1990, so when they come to Intl cricket, they are in environment where there are less bouncers so they can eliminate the high risk stroke like hook.

They play the pull shot well. Especially Kohli who gets on top of the bounce and keeps it down. Did that to MJ more than once from memory.

Agreed, I must be confusing hook and pull
Altough sharma plays a hybrid of hook and pull to backward square leg and that quite a sight against pace
