I would like

Dean Jones - Head coach
Inzamam ul Haq - Batting coach
Shoaib Akhtar - Bowling coach

PPers here can fantasize all they want. This is the platform to fulfill the fantasies.

However, the reality is, you cannot stop Mohsin Hassan Khan from becoming the next coach. There's a reason why he stood down from the previous position.

Mani appears to admire him.

How do you rate mohsin hassan khan as a coach?

Dean Jones: Head Coach
Waqar Younis: Bowling Coach
Inzamaz Ul Haq / Mahela Jayawardena: Batting Coach

All on 4 year contracts so they can build the team for the next world cup. Better not get a local head coach.

Also get a good fielding/fitness coach in there.

i have serious reservations about Dean Jones becoming the coach... his input in Islamabad United has been Asif Ali and he is in no way international class. in last 3/4 years, he has been unable to develop Hussain Talat, Shaibzada Farhan and Asif Ali...

on other side, he is a fighter and a good strategist.. we see how islamabad with almost 0 star power have always been the best team in PSL ....

As long as PCB don't select crooks like Miandad, Mohsin, S Nawaz, Latif, Waqar, A Sohail, Moin ....we should be happy

Tom Moody/ Gary Kirsten: Head Coach
Glen McGrath: Bowling Coach
Jonty Rhodes: Fielding Coach

I think Dean Jones could be a decent coach but not sure who else would want the job apart from the usual suspects.

As a batting coach I would love it if somehow we could get Sangakkara. I doubt that'll happen now because of his job in the media now but that would be fantastic because he really could share so much with our batsmen and he knows the modern game too

Wish list...
Head Coach: Tom Moody or Stephen Fleming
Batting Coach: Mike Hussey
Bowling Coach: Waqar Younis / Troy Cooley
Spin Bowling Coach: Saqi
Fielding Coach: Steven Rixon

The chances of Pakistani hiring any of these gentlemen is nil! :)

Tom Moody/ Gary Kirsten: Head Coach
Glen McGrath: Bowling Coach
Jonty Rhodes: Fielding Coach

either headcoach will be great...
McGrath? why? he was a great bowler but i think (might be wrong) has 0 coaching experience
Jonty is all done and dusted to stay with indian cricket ... steve rixon is much better

Head coach:Andy flower
Fast bowling coach:Heath streak
Spin bowling coach:Saeed ajmal
Batting coach:Younis khan
Fielding coach: Darren Berry

Chief selector:Shoaib Akhtar

Head coach: Gary / Tom / Dean
Bowling coach: Shane Bond / Ryan Harris
Fielding coach: Rixon
Batting coach: Mohammad Yosuf

I think the Chief selector post should be removed, and there should be a Head scout position who has couple of other scouts all over Pakistan. Team selection should remain with Captain, and coach.

Former Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq has emerged as the top contender for the vacant head coach position of the Men in Green.

According to sources, Misbah, who is also a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s Cricket Committee, will replace former Head Coach Mickey Arthur after the board decided against renewing the latter’s contract.

Misbah, who represented Pakistan in 75 Tests, 162 ODIs and 39 T20Is, is considered capable enough to serve as the national side’s head coach by the Ehsan Mani-led administration. The former cricketer took over the reins as Pakistan captain, after the infamous spot-fixing scandal in 2010, and brought the country’s cricket out of turmoil through his astute leadership.

Arthur removed as PCB looks to revamp coaching setup

As part of the recruitment process, the PCB will first advertise for this role and will invite high level applications from interested candidates. If the process leads to better alternative for head coach’s spot, Misbah’s services can also be used for the batting coach’s role.

Sources further stated that former Pakistan fast-bowler Mohammad Akram is likely to take over as the bowling coach of the side. It must be noted that Akram is the current head coach of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi. The 44-year-old was also appointed for the same role, back in 2012 as well.

Batting Coach: Brendon Mccullum
Fielding Coach: Brendon Mccullum
Fast Bowling Coach : Shane Bond
Spin Bowling Coach:Saqlain/Mushtaq
Chief Selector: Misbah

Our chances of hiring the NZ contingent are zero however Hesson would do an amazing job for Pak.

We will end up with Waqar as coach 😂😂😂

Good decision if it is true.

Correct. Will finally see the team rise again if true. The one who can lead from the front, will teach the same to the players.

Nerves of steel, the one man army to always rescue us.

It will be disastrous if Misbah becomes the next coach head coach. The results will mirror his captaincy era, which led to the ODI side to fall outside the top 8 in the rankings four years ago.

As a batsman he was very limited and a serial choker, as evident by his display in Mohali in the 2011 WC and the way he got out in the 2007 WT20 final.

As a captain he destroyed our one-day team in the 2010s (2011-2015) when other teams were adopting a modern brand of batting. In tests, he was hopeless captain outside UAE and should have retired at 38-39 when we drew embarrassingly to a really poor Zimbabwe side in 2013.

I also think his achievements as captain in UAE are overstated because he had match winning spinners and Younis Khan to carry him.

He set bad precedent by retiring late because every Pakistan who’s in his 30s, thinks he’s young and has another 10 years left. This is why we got Abdul Razzaq come out of retirement earlier this year, so he could get acquired by one of the franchises in PSL. Hence why I have no doubt as a head coach he will favour seniors over youth.

Overall he did more harm than good for Pakistan cricket, but there is more damage to come if he becomes Pakistan's next head coach.

I think its only masala news.I expect wasim khan to make the right decision.

A local coach who has experiences all around the world. A foreign coach will take time to get settle in the different environment and understand the culture. Most of the people mentioning Dean Jones will be wanting to boot him out in 2 years.

I hope so. I also have faith in Wasim Khan but I have a horrible feeling Ehsan Mani will call the shots and bring either the oldie loving conservative Misbah, incompetent Waqar or the toxic Mohsin Khan into the set-up as a replacement for Mickey.

Maybe Wasim Akram as a bowling coach but i doubt he’ll take the job.

Good decision if it is true.

Exactly.

I wouldn’t mind him or Deano.

My setup would be:

Head coach: Misbah ul Haq/Dean Jones

Fast-bowling coach: Wasim Akram/Muhammad Akram/Ian Pont

Spin-bowling coach: Saqlain Mustaq/Mustaq Ahmad

Batting coach: Kumar Sangakarra/Mohammad Yousaf/Inzimam ul Haq

Fielding coach: Steve Rixon/Jonty Rhodes

Don’t think this will happen but one can only hope.

I think he would love to work with Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain and Naseem Shah.

Mani saab is just a puppet and is there because of his ICC credentials.

The real man behind the PCB is Wasim Khan.

Wasim Akram is no more employed in India or IPL

I'm sure he will accept the job if given the chance.

Misbah can lift the Pakistan team just like he did it with Islamabad United. Guy's a cricketing genius.

Doesn't come with any baggage either, unlike unparh ex-cricketers and conspiracy theorists of the yesteryears.

I'm not sure if Deano can really understand our local players. Language barrier will always remain an issue.

Really? I thought he only wanted to be a head coach.

Nonetheless, it would be great to see Wasim Akram as a bowling coach. He’s very good at pointing out the faults of our bowlers and the ’pep talk’ he gave to Shaheen before the NZ match helped Shaheen get back in form.

I'd be happy if we can get any one of Tom Moody, Gary Kirsten or Andy Flower.

Only one call is needed from Imran and he will be ready to give the coaching to bowlers :P

He has, in my opinion, the best cricketing mind in Pakistan after Imran Khan.

I wish to see him soon in our national setup.

Then why hasn't Sarfraz been axed from the captaincy? Ehsan Mani actually likes Sarfraz.

Khuda ka wasta hai yar, say this with a straight face.

If Misbah becomes the next head coach, mark my works this free PR agent would go missing from PP once the reality of his beloved hero becomes apparent once again.

Doesn’t matter much (regarding whoever are Coach), unless PCB fixes the Captain (s). Cricket still is an extremely old fashioned game where the analytics & pre-match tactics are easily over shadowed by the on field presence (& contribution) of Captain. It can be mentioned that CL winner & EPL runners-up Liverpool’s Captain is Jordan Henderson.... and ManCity’s regular Captain hardly starts!!! - not in cricket. A Tendulkar or Gary Sobers could be statistical anomaly, but cricket is a game dominated by great players as Captain.

I might upset posters here, but I have to say - with Specialist Captain, PAK’s fortune won’t change much whoever is made captain. In other way, PAK is a better T20 team one main reason is that it’s captain doesn’t cost that much in T20.

After coaching appointments, PCB must rethink about it’s Captaincy for 3 formats, and that must be upon discussion with the coach.

Having said that, if PCB is looking for a change in management style, then Misbah might not be a bad choice among locals - muuuuuuuuuch better than the likes of Javed, Mohsin, Aaquib, Basit or WY.

What I think is, they might go for a little revised role for Head Coach (rather, we should call it Team Director), where the HC is more of a facilitator for Specialist coaches, Captain and Scouts (selectors). In that case, Misbah can be a very good choice, because he has the education, experience and personality for that role. He can be successful if they appoint 4 top quality specialist coaches who knows their job. And, obviously a C Selector/Scout that watches domestic games religiously.

In that regard, if PCB wants to appoint Misbah as team director, may be they should look to appoint capable Captains as well, and specialist coaches far better that Azhar or Grant. Also, I think it’s time that PCB appoints a top quality classical spin coach to teach PAK spinners the art (& value) of turn, flight & loop - my choice is Rangana Herath. For Batting, it’s a MUST that the next coach should be an ECB/CA Level 3 qualified batting coach. For Fast bowling, may be a local coach can work (I rate Kabir Khan quite high), while doesn’t matter much who is the fielding coach - problem is somewhere else.

I am sure, if Misbah is considered, then Wasim Khan has been indeed done his homework on support coaches. Misbah is not going to improve the skill level or PAK players, neither he can fix their technical flaws, but he is a very good administrator, and an honest trier.

I wonder if Misbah is interested in being a coach or selector. He was a brilliant captain and he had a brilliant personality. He also has great communication skills.

The cheif selector role suits misbah not being the head coach.

Misbah as new coach?

I'm not in favour of Misbah.
Do you think he is an ideal candidate for top job?

NO.

Pakistan needs to look at approaching coaches like Jayawardhane , Moody , Mike Hesson etc.

too many current players have played with misbah.. misbah is a bit of a yes man .. he will fall under pressure from "seniors" ... so no ...

too many current players have played with misbah.. misbah is a bit of a yes man .. he will fall under pressure from "seniors" ... so no ...

Lol what? Misbah had complete control over the side as captain. He was no yes man. The downside was that he had an utterly incompetent team to captain for most of his tenure

If misbah is selected as a coach, selector or anything to do with the senior national team, then Pak are heading towards the dark ages!!

Pak struggled to make 250 when he was around and would have never, ever made a total close to 330 (unless it was minnows).

He loved playing with a defensive mind-set and that was the first thing Micky wanted to address, which Micky did do (thankfully) and somewhat brought Pak to the modern era of batting.

Misbah is intelligent and was a good test skipper.

But we know how his LOI captaincy went. It would be concerning that younger talents opportunities may diminish if he is the coach.

Am I missing something here? What are Dean Jones's credentials as head-coach exactly? He's coached one PSL team.

Should try to get Kirsten or Any Flower as head-coach. Mahela or Sanga as batting coach. Misbah as chief-selector and any good former fast-bowler as bowling-coach.

Head coach I feel should be Dean Jones. He's done the coaching qualifications, performed in the PSL, judged talent well (he was the one who really identified Sharjeel). He's really been trying for the job for years, it's clear he has determination for it.

I would like Ian Pont as bowling coach, he's had some enthusiasm for Pakistani cricket in the past, and has done good things in the PSL with Quetta in terms of bowling.

I don't know about fielding. The bad thing is that we've let good fielding coaches go that were improving our fielding. Really sad honestly. Maybe if one of them could come back like Rixon, but don't see that happening.

I'm not sure about batting, whoever's best capable. I think it's a little dangerous to assume just because they're a good batsmen are good batting coaches. I don't think I'd want Inzi, need someone fresh, even though don't think he did a bad job as chief selector, just too soon. But if we're going based on player, maybe Sangakaara would be a good shout, he seems knowledge, knows about technique, and it rather impressed me how he transformed his LOI game, really upping the SR in the latter part of his career to fit with the times. Maybe he could help achieve that with our batsmen.

However I do think Language barrier could definitely be an issue, and would prefer at least one of the coaches to be Pakistani, preferably one who is also knowledgable of and worked recently reguarly in the Pakistani domestic set up.

Dean Jones as head coach
Waqar Younis as bowling coach
Mushtaq Ahmed as spin bowling coach

Mushtaq is needed if we want our spinners to be effective.

Good post.

Though, I don't think any system like that is coming.

Misbah as coach will ensure we have the right strategy and tactics to actually win matches. That's what was lacking under Arthur, particularly Tests. Championship is coming and we need to get serious.

I'm sure Batting and bowling coaches will do their jobs in the areas requiring more technicalities, but Misbah seems to be the right man to coach, motivate, keep players fit, and devise strategies.

I wonder if Misbah is interested in being a coach or selector. He was a brilliant captain and he had a brilliant personality. He also has great communication skills.

I think Misbah will get any role he wants, he has a lot of respect in the entire cricketing world, and the PCB as well, even his haters respect him.

We do have some trolls on this forum though, who have no idea about his credentials and class, and you'd find them polluting every thread. The block function is a wonderful feature here.

Misbah is intelligent and was a good test skipper.

But we know how his LOI captaincy went. It would be concerning that younger talents opportunities may diminish if he is the coach.

It's a myth.

Islamabad United introduced the most youngsters in PSL and stuck with them, won with them, under Misbah.

Misbah didn't have the right selectors and talent available to him, sadly.

It's bad enough we're using this circus league to identify players for international cricket. Now some want to do the same for coaches.

I dont mind the misbah head coach option if it comes with high calibre specialist coaches like Jayawardene or Sangakara or Hussey for batting, Ian Pont or Wasim for bowling and then a local for spin like Mushie or Saqlain.
Fielding can be anyone with high calibre coaching merit.
Couple of reasons:
1. Cant have all foreign staff due to language barrier, ability to know of domestic players, stay and travel in pakistan to monitor domestic occasionally etc.
2. Next 2 years big focus is actually test championship and then partly t20 world cup. Misbah wasnt bad in these two areas.
3. This could give chance to appoint a fresh young captain and misbah can be great mentor for young captain given his excellent leadership and controversy free captaincy.
4. Hopefully will help bring back good spin options and allow playing multiple spinners atleast jn home games. Can be important even for next world cup being in sub continent.

I'd be happy with someone like Tom Moody to be honest. The head coach should be allowed to select the support staff. Chief Selector's the tough one and I don't really have a clue who is the right person.

Read a report that said Heeson was on the short-list for the head-coach gig. I think PCB should try to get him. He's a great coach, a professional and a total no-nonsense guy.

He also happens to be on India and Bangladesh's short-list but seeing how India might retain Shastri, Pakistan might be the next best proposition for Heeson.

I agree that he had THE WORST team to play with but he was never strong to get the right people on board. he didnt have the guts to kick out the dead wood of akmal brothers or asad shafiqs or azhar aliz in the odi team.... he was the mindset of experience over youth... played and played and played the tried and tested carps

Pakistan did not have many other options at the time which is why they kept coming back to the same guys. Also, the selectors probably had a bigger hand in selecting those guys than Misbah

Can't have Misbah as a selector.

It's not ideal for Pakistani cricket or for Misbah. He's friends with most of the current players and that isn't going to end well when it's time to make tough decisions.

The media and fans won't leave him alone when he starts favoring his buddies.

Was incredibly unlucky in the latter part. Missed out on Babar, Hasan, Imam, Fakhar, Shadab, Shaheen, Amir, Haris mostly as he was injured. Imad too though I know you don't rate him.

Why I hate people blaming lack of talent for Sarfraz's/Arthur's lack of success. I wish we could have seen what Misbah could have done with the same set of players. Not saying he would for sure of done better, but it's clear in terms of resources at least in ODIs, Sarfraz's resources were just worlds apart compared to Misbah's. Whether our current talent level is considered good or not, one big positive is it's a massive upgrade to what we had years back.

Coach Otis Gibson/Brendon McCullum, Batting Coach Graeme Thorpe/Brendon McCullum, Fielding Coach Brendon McCullum.

Captain Shadab or Fakher Zaman

Yep, agreed. Good post!

His excellent leadership qualities can come in very handy here, controversy-free. He also speaks the local language, probably the best expert on domestic cricket, and knows how the system works. Wants to improve that system as well.

He'll gel really well with the captain and the players if he's the next coach. Being able to understand and comprehend what your coach is talking about is very underrated here.

I don't think he'll apply for the role. He should, though.

pakistani cricketers are usually arrogant and simply do not listen to a foreign coach . this was different under mickey arthur's arthur tenure.he was very strict and stern. he did not mind shouting and acting out physically against players(he threw a chair at them in south africa mickey did go overboard on this occasion). this kind of discipline was needed initially, players fitness improved drastically, but this style of coaching did not impact the players towards the end.

The next head coach should not be mike hesson or any other foreign coach due to the communication barrier. the next head coach should be someone like mickey who is strict and demands discipline. I dont know which pakistani has similar characteristics.

The prospect of misbah is promising. he has a very smart cricketing brain. he will not hamper the progression of the odi side, he knows the modern game and will not force players to be conservative, like every misbah critic fears.

It should also be noted that this world cup presented pitches which were difficult for batting. all test matches last year had pitches that were difficult for batting, so maybe misbah's guidance is required.

PCB to announce new team management next week; Misbah, Waqar frontrunners

The Pakistan Cricket Board could announce its new team management next week with Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis favourites to be named head coach and bowling coach.

Mohsin Khan is likely to be appointed the chief selector.

A source in the PCB said that the five-member panel appointed by the board to interview prospective candidates for the team management positions had nearly concluded its work.

"They will now have deliberations on finalizing their recommendations and it appears as if Misbah is a favourite to be named head coach with Waqar as the bowling coach," he said.

The source said the panel, headed by former captain Intikhab Alam and which also included PCB CEO Wasim Khan, had interviewed most candidates including Misbah, Waqar, Dean Jones, Johan Botha, Courtney Walsh, Yasir Arafat and some others in the last two days directly or on the video link.

"Mohsin who has remained a chief selector and interim head coach in the past was invited by the board to give an interview to the panel which indicates he will be given some major responsibility next week," the source said.

He said Mohsin who was keen on becoming head coach could be named chief selector or team manager.

"The fact that Mohsin was called all the way to Lahore and the fact that he stepped down from the cricket committee after an understanding with the board means he will get some responsibility," the source said.

He confirmed that former captain, Rashid Latif, had been offered the job of chief selector but he turned it down after both sides could not agree on a financial package.

"I don't think Misbah would have applied if he had not reached an understanding over his terms and conditions for the job with the board," the source said.

Misbah has made it clear to the board he should be given a remuneration package which is better than the ones given to foreign coaches in the past.
