As Shaheen will be out of action for 4-6 weeks. Who should be the replacement in the squad? 4 frontline pacers are set but, still need a backup.

Some options amongst pacers

1) Arshad Iqbal
2) Mohammad Hasnain
3) Mir Hamza (Left armer and was impressive in PSL and Pakistan Cup)
4) Akif Javed (Might not be ready yet but, a left arm seamer)

Or maybe another spinner? Might be too much with 3 already in Squad.

Hassan Ali should be allowed to work on his bowling mechanics and would be a bad decision I believe to include him in current form.

Suggestions?

Knowing Babar Azam and PCB they’ll go with Hassan Catch Drop Ali

True. Would be a poor move I guess. If he has been dropped on form then he shouldn’t come in without working on it. Otherwise he might keep on struggling in Asia cup.

Any left arm seamer should replace him. Indian top order really struggle against that angle. If Amir is available, I would play him.

He is retired and is far from any decent form even in T20 leagues.

In the squad
1. Rumman Raees- Crafty bowler
2. A. Iqbal - Shouldn't have been dropped after Zim series.

In the XI - Dahani.

I would go with either Mir Hamzah or Akif Javed.

Let's give them chance to prove themselves at bigger platform. Akif can be dangerous with new ball especially if he gets his inswing right.

Mir Hamza can be a handful on his day but he lacks death-bowling skills. Akif is way too raw to debut against India. Hasnain is a good option if he's in a good rhythm with his new action. We can open the bowling with Naseem and Rauf. Hasnain can bowl in the middle overs with the spinners.

If I had it my way I wouldn't give Rauf the new ball but alas we don't have many options available after Shaheen's injury.

I will pick one of these three things.

Don't pick anyone as Shaheen replacement.

Pick Arshad he has been part of the t20 squad recently.

Pick Akif Javed he's a left armer has decent amount of skills.

No point in playing him in every game , this bound to happen.

Pakistan doesn’t have any rotation policy.

If Shaheen wasn’t injured he would have even played against NL

If they don’t learn now, this might even repeat , as always Pakistan lose their premium inform bowlers just before 50 over WC for diff reason

Lost Amir and Asif before 2011
Lost Junaid khan to injury , Ajmal and Hafeez banned before 2015

2019
Nearly dropped Amir in 2019 , due to overburning him playing every game and he lost his A game but still got to be the no.1 bowler for Pakistan
Pulled Shaheens confidence down by show8ng inconsistency towards his selection.
Fallback to Wahab for no reason who must have been dropped right after 2017 CT
Usman Shinwari who was consistently given chances dropped for Hasnain who only carried drinks all the time
Junaid khan who formed a good bowling partnership with Amir especially with the old ball, which won them CT in the same country 2 years back.

PCB poor think tank will go with Hassan Ali now as replacement.

Man, reading this just annoyed me (agree with you, by the way). Hasan Ali, as of right now and at most, should only be playing test cricket. In regards to the rotation policy, Pakistan seriously needs to form one if they want their frontliners to be as healthy as possible. You would think a country that supposedly boasts the best fast bowling talent would be open to apply a rotation policy in their national team. I almost guarantee Shaheen would’ve played all the Netherlands games had he been healthy.

It will be Hasnain the future great we are told for sure:inzi2

Wahab, need his experience and he bowls well in UAE.

Wahab in recent times:

Arrived late for The Hundred
Missed 2 games
Played 1 game
Ruled out of The Hundred due to injury

Agree with giving Arshad Iqbal a chance, should have never been dropped.

I think more than anything if we have to go with another fast bowler it should be a solid fast left hander.

The current lot are all right handers- rauf/ dahani/ naseem shah/ and wasim jr.

Not only cuz India struggle with left hand pace, but its also to have a mix or combo of left and right hand bowlers.

Another thing that can be tried out is stick with the 4 bowlers you have and if you need to include someone else in the squad either bring in a good middle over batsman, and a quality spinner.

regardless this is kind of a good think for Pakistan in the sense, the team will be tested to see how they do without their main strike bowler.

One thing I am hearing alot if Hasan Ali seems to be top candidate for Shaheen Replacement and if this is true, than that is 5 step backwards. Will not be shocked if it ends up happening.

Akif or Mir Hamza surely. They wont do worse than Hassan Ali.

Like Mir Hamza, think he is a decent bowler, can swing the bowl.

Also agree that Arshad Iqbal should not have been dropped from the side.

Hasan Ali will be a backward steps and he needs some work. Rauf, Dahani and Naseem will probably be the starters but Hamza and Wasim Jnr in the squad is fine.

If they are smart, they'd pick a left armer and pick him in XI. Indian has been struggling v random left armers

Worth the risk

Agreed, anyway Pak has very less chance to win against India. Better to be attacking rather than defensive.

You can't replace Shaheen because other than him everyone else is medicore or simply trash.

But it serves us right because most of the fans on here I see are happy to see the back of Amir. This guy even at trundling speeds is miles ahead of anyone else in the team as a white ball bowler.

Simply based on UAE conditions, I would pick Faheem. It's unlikely the replacement player would play anyways but he pitches really well in UAE on slower pitches.

As per a report:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been tasked with finding a replacement for Shaheen Afridi for the upcoming Asia Cup in 2022.

In light of the latest developments, Hasan Ali has been identified as the leading candidate to replace Shaheen Afridi, who has been advised by the PCB Medical Advisory Committee to take a 4-6 week break.

Can see Hassan getting smashed all over the park. I hope PCB thinks out of the box for this.

I'm guessing nobody like Wahab or Akif will be allowed to skip the queue.

Next in line appears to be one of either Mohammad Wasim or Dhani.

The hilarious thing is that Rauf is now our most senior bowler :))

Bring on Akif Javed - Pacy left arm and could be a nice surprise factor for Indian batsmen. Take the daam chance!

Wow! Very surprising.

Hasan seems out of form. Selecting him is a bad move.

Is there another left arm fast bowler in Pakistan?.......
That bowler should replace him.......
Otherwise it is better to bring back Shoib Malik.....
Anyways best of luck for and wish and hope for your speedy recovery Shaheen

Yes few others who can be decent but, not his quality of course. However, doubt selectors and management would be thinking in that direction. I personally believe you need that angular variety in the squad for the tournament, not only for the India match.

As per rumours they are trying to replace him with someone experienced i.e Hassan who himself is out of form and not considering the left arm angle. Lets see

Ee take a look at five options Pakistan selectors may consider when choosing who should replace injured pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi at the Asia Cup.

Pakistan suffered a massive blow on Saturday when star pacer Shaheen Afridi was ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup tournament due to the knee injury he picked up while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Afridi is expected to return to full fitness in time for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, with the tall left-armer to remain with Pakistan’s white-ball squad while he undergoes his rehabilitation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board have already indicated a replacement for Afridi at the upcoming Asia Cup will be announced shortly and we look at five possible options that selectors could opt for.

Recall a proven performer in Hasan Ali

The right-armer was a notable omission when selectors first chose Pakistan's squad for the Asia Cup and a prompt recall should not be discounted. Ali's form since last year's T20 World Cup has been indifferent and selectors chose to leave him out of their initial Asia Cup plans when selecting their 15-player squad for the six-team tournament. But the right-armer is a proven performer at international level and would likely slot in seamlessly if given a reprieve by selectors.

Need a lefty, so select Mir Hamza

If selectors are looking for a like for like selection to replace Afridi, then fellow left-armer Mir Hamza appears the next best option. Hamza has played only once for Pakistan - a solitary Test against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2018 - but only recently featured in a warm-up match in Lahore against Babar Azam's ODI squad that travelled to the Netherlands and is sure to be in the back of selectors' minds. Some may see a call-up for Hamza as a major surprise, but if it's a left-arm quick that selectors want then the 29-year-old is clearly the best option.

Take a punt on exciting youngster Zaman Khan

A left-field selection would be to include fiery young pacer Zaman Khan, who impressed during this year's edition of the Pakistan Super League when he took 18 wickets for the Lahore Qalandars. The 20-year-old has already drawn comparisons with legendary Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga and Pakistan could do worse than giving the right-armer his first taste of the big time.

Zaman Khan performed well in the recent PSL alongside AfridiZaman Khan performed well in the recent PSL alongside Afridi
Spin can win in the desert

The pitches in the UAE are expected to provide some assistance to spin, so could Pakistan benefit from including another spinner in their squad? Leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood is already travelling with Pakistan's white-ball squad in the Netherlands and could extend his stay during the Asia Cup, while left-armer Danish Aziz is another slow bowler who could perform well if given the chance.

Stick with the pace attack already in squad

Often the easiest decision for selectors is to not name a replacement and just put faith in the players that were already chosen in the first place. Pakistan have a solid group of quicks without Afridi – Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Shahnawaz Dahani are already in the squad – so there are no guarantees a replacement player would earn a spot in the XI ahead of any of this quartet of pace bowlers.

Pakistan squad for the Asia Cup: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usman Qadir.

Damn. Hasan back will be a complete disaster.

Among the lefties, the only guy with pace and swing is Akif. But I don't trust him yet.

Or there are Rumman, Hamza and Waqas maqsood. All limited but all have something to offer.

Mir Hamza seems to be bowling the best I have seen him ball in last year or so. Swinging the new ball into the right handers regularly and taking away the odd one. Ball is also zipping a bit rushing the batsman as he looks in pretty good rhythm. Has experience, temperamentally strong and not shabby in the death as well. Maybe worth a look as replacement.

Why is no one talking about Rumman Raees?

Surely has been bowling really well since his come back in PSL and now in KPL. Thing is in Pak system unless you are available for both white ball formats your stocks in consideration of national setup becomes lower. Currently he is only playing T20 cricket coming back after a career threatening fitness issues.

Not sure about his overall fitness otherwise considering his performances he has been solid in T20 cricket and has a lot of domestic experience as well alongside decent international experience.

May be Amir is giving a hint. :inti

Pakistan should play it safe and take Amir

He will not be as lethal as Shaheen but Amir has enough experience to bowl 4 overs for 30 runs and take a couple of wickets.

Guys like Hassan, Hasnain and any other name may just bowl 4 overs for 40+

I don't see that happening until Ramiz Raja is at the helm. Secondly the guy has not made himself available for national selection.
