Here I am trying to analyze the best batsmen in saving test matches and whether figures in drawn tests indicate how much a batsmen can bat for his life or avert defeat from a crisis.

Here are the figures of the best batsmen in drawn test matches.Sachin and Mahela as well as Dravid's stats have not been updated.

Highest averages in draws (Qual: 3000 runs) Batsman Tests Runs Average 100s/ 50s
Mahela Jayawardene 45 3935 60.53 12/ 16
Jacques Kallis 33 3086 71.76 13/ 13
Brian Lara 36 3708 71.30 12/ 10
Wally Hammond 38 3614 70.86 12/ 12
Garry Sobers 36 3515 70.30 12/ 14
Rahul Dravid 59 5379 64.8 17/28
Allan Border 59 5084 68.70 16/ 27
Ken Barrington 39 3775 67.05 11/ 21
Sunil Gavaskar 67 6039 65.64 22/ 25
Sachin Tendulkar 104 5887 65.41 20/26

Noteworthy that Gary Sobers, Brian Lara,Rahul Dravid.Allan Border,Ken Barrington,Sachin Tendulkar or Sunil Gavaskar could be the ultimate batsmen to face a crisis or single-handedly carry the team's cause on their shoulders.I would state that Dravid and Border were specialists in averting a crisis with Tendulkar,Sobers and Lara as much match-winners as champions in a crisis.Kallis was alos as good in batting for your life as Sobers but not as good a match-winner.At his best Mahela Jayewardene was outstanding in retrieving a sinking ship.Steve Waugh and Clive Lloyd miss out here as although they were outstanding when the chips were down they played for an all-time champion team. In a longer career George Headley would certainly have given company to those mentioned above.Morally Ian Chappell averaging over 59 in drawn tests which constituted over 60 % of his overall runs should have joined the list and even Javed Miandad.Geoff Boycott also unluckily misses out.
Hanif Mohammad should also have been right up there. as well as Len Hutton.

Above all with his great aggregate of 5084 runs in drawn matches and average of over 68 arguably Allan Border is the best performer in a drawn cause, followed by Rahul Dravid.Gave Border the edge considering his % average score of team runs and bowling attacks faced.Significant that both were the best batsmen of their era in a crisis overshadowing even Viv Richards or Sachin Tendulkar. Many thought Border was the ultimate man to bat for your life in the 1980's while Gavaskar bore pressure more than any batsmen in the 1970's.

My best batsmen to save a test in order of merit.

1.Alan Border
2.Rahul Dravid
3.Sunil Gavaskar
4.Hanif Mohammad
5.Brian Lara
6.Len Hutton
7.Ian Chappell
8.Steve Waugh
9.Jacques Kallis
10.Gary Sobers
11.Walter Hammond
12.Javed Miandad
13.Sachin Tendulkar
14.Ken Barrington.
15.Geoff Boycott
16.Clive Lloyd
17.Mahela Jayewardene

Ignored stats and included Ian Chappell and Steve Waugh.I feel Lara could overshadow Sachin in saving a game and javed Minadad when the chips were down.Readers should read the no of games Allan border has single-handedly saved whether in West Indies ,England or Pakistan or Dravid .
12.Mahela Jayewardene

Saving test is not reflected in over all avgs etc.. I think it would and should go to Laxman!

Man of crisis is the term we like to use.

From Pakistan

Asif Iqbal and Javed Miandad were the two people who we could depend upon

In the recent times I could remember faf du plessis and ABD saving a test match in Australia. Matt prior doing it against New Zealand in NZ. Some guy in WI against India on the last day...

Hanif was and will always be the greatest rear guard batsman the cricketing world has ever seen.......

I don't think averages is a good way to judge that one.
You should look for very good it great innings that were played to draw games.

Just some exemples of great test innings I remember:
Lara vs India
Kamran Akmal vs India at Mohali
Faf And ABDV vs Australia and vs India.
Of course, Hanif Mohammad'S marathon innings!

Imran Khan

I think he saved so many matches with his batting, hence, higher the number of not-outs.
