Was wondering who was the most popular/renowned sportsperson during their peak years? Doesn't have to be the best in their sport but popularity wide across he globe/that sports playing nations?

Few names I could think of,

Bradman
Ali
Pele
Viv
Maradona
Beckham
Tiger woods
Pete Sampras
Federer
Schumacher
Mike Tyson
Jordan

Who do you think breaks the popularity records across the world? And stories for their popularity if you can share would be great..

Muhammad Ali for sure! The whole world knew about him.

Most of these guys, like Bradman are just really good representatives of their own particular sport and not famous. If it was such a list, then Jahangir Khan deserves to be there before anyone else because the way he dominated sport, nobody has, nobody will.

Fame wise, Ali wins it everyday of the week followed by Jorder, Pele and Maradona. No cricketer on the list. Maybe Imran khan.

Tendulkar, by volume. He would have got brutal majority vote of a 1.2bn population.

In terms of world wide popularity, I think it'll be Maradona - because of the game he played.

If I bring popular players within the countries their game is popular (& not considering the population mass), probably the most popular player will be Federar, while most respected Ali. But, players like Ali, Federar, Jordan, Woods, O'Sullivan, Schumi are unique in their sports.

If I go by individual peak compared to contemporary generation, I think Brandman has to be at top in terms of stats while Imran for few years probably reached the highest individual peak of contribution in a team game. Then comes Jordan (though I think, Labron has surpassed him)

In individual game, I think the Md. Ali of Huston Astrodome at 24 (against Ernie Terrell & Cleveland Williams) was undoubtedly the best ever - don't think in any generation, any weight class, ever any boxer could match him. In a niche sports, but Ali's superiority in brilliance is probably matched only by Jahangir Khan & Ronnie O'Sullivan - on his day, Ronnie is twice the entertainer than the next 2 men, who has 11 World titles among them (Davis & Higgins). Then comes Woods & Federar.

I don't rate Schumi, Fangio or Agostini that high, because part of their success is the machine they drove or ride.

Sadly, no footballer comes in this list, because in a team game none of them carried their team like few other sports I mentioned. Pele had at least 5/6 ATG's in each of his 3 WC winning team, same can be said for Zizu or fat Ronaldo, while Messi is a looser outside Barca & Cruiff or De Stefano or CR plays for weak national teams. In that regard, I'll put Maradona at top, for his solo show of 1986 - I am sure, even die hard Arges fans won't be able to name 6 other team members of his 1986 & 1990 team - Pele had half a dozen among Didi, Vava, Zagalo, Zito, Santos brothers, Amarildo, Garincha, Jairzinho, Garson, Tostao, Rivelino, Carlos Albarto around him in those 3 WCs.

^^^^No one cares about volume with regards to origin ethnicity, it doesn't equate to global appeal around the world amongst a variety of unique people and cultures.

Many of the ones mentioned in the OP were before my time but of the ones I've seen, by far it has to be Roger Federer that is the most popular athlete globally - even if a person hasn't ever seen or played tennis before knows who he is and that too in a world where the amount of sports that are mass followed is probably unparalleled by any previous era.

Muhammad Ali. In his pomp, he was as popular in Pakistan as any Pakistani cricketer, and I am sure it would have been the case all over the world.

I knew he was popular there but not that big until I read all the tributes from leading media chains in Pakistan talking about their experiences watching Ali during his prime and channels like PTV who covered his fights! unheard of during that time am guessing but that was his appeal there and Ali has been to Pakistan on a number occasions as well, do you have any insight on those visits?

He visited Pakistan in 1988 and 1989, long after he retired, so it did it not influence his stardom in Pakistan. His popularity can be gauged by the fact that it was uncommon for children to skip school and for shops to close down for his fight."float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" was on everyone's lips. Let's also not forget that this was an age of no Internet and no social media.

The only access that people in Pakistan had was the live transmission on PTV and newspapers, but that did not stop him from becoming arguably the most loved sporting personality in Pakistan. He pretty much changed the face of boxing forever, and how people view the sport. He was to boxing what Tiger woods (with less charisma) was to golf in the late 90's and early 2000's. It is quite ironic that Ali was universally loved almost everywhere but his own country, where he was once the most hated man due to political/ethnic/religious reasons that go beyond the scope of this thread.

And as far as his visit to Pakistan in 1988 is concerned, people across the country could not wait for him to arrive and he had planned to visit almost all major parts of the country but unfortunately, due to his health problems, he had to cut the visit short. He did visit a few colleges in Lahore/Islamabad and interacted freely with the local people. Those were the days when terrorism had no foothold in Pakistan. He even visited the famous Data Darbaar in Lahore. There was less fanfare for his second visit in 1989 because he was invited a special guest for the South Asian Games.

Mohammad Ali
Michael Jordan

lol at naming cricketers

Muhammad Ali. I hardly doubt anyone who was alive during his time or even the people who were born after and never got to watch him live (me included), did not at least hear about him.

Muhammad Ali. Even 3rd world Muslim nations knew him because of an Islamic connection.

Muhammad Ali. From Cape Town to Cairo, Ali is by far the most popular figure on our continent

Footballers are more popular than any Boxer of the 60s-70s.

Ronaldo and Messi in the current era of Internet and Mass Media.

Nobody know Tendulkar and Maradona in U.S.

And U.S. is a big part of the world.

Agree about United States and football, probably the most ignorant country in the world about footballers .

Most consider soccer to be soft game for women while their Football ( NFL ) is real man's game. Soccer is often referred to as poverty ball, a sport that only poor Nations play.

Pretty accurate analysis.

By worldwide popularity and influence outside sport its Ali BY A MILE.

For this generation its Federer or Usain bolt .

Among footballers Messi doesn't tower over his contemporaries (Ronaldo) by that big a margin, so we can't count him. Federer already had peak popularity before the rest of the big 4 came to the party, even now he retains his following even in the twilight years of his career.

Usain is Usain after all. No competition, no equal !

Amongst Earlier footballers - Pele and Maradona count, but maradona played most of his football in the TV era, so that gave him far more visibility that pele. This goes to show how far ahead Pele was in his era.

Soccer is for girls. Look at the physiques of most footballers. It's similar to that of females.

NFL is a real man's game. So are Ice Hockey and Boxing.

WG Grace was the first sporting megastar. More people round the world knew about him than Queen-Empress Victoria.

In the TV era, Muhammad Ali - for sheer dominance of his sport, vocal charisma and political activism.

Babe Ruth - played in the 30s or 40s probably the best hitter to play baseball.

Doubt many people apart from Nort America know Babe Ruth.. Baseball is an American sport and is not popular anywhere else barring a couple other countries..

I always laugh at the Desis who think that the reason why we suck at Soccer is due to inferior genetics and poor physique as if Soccer is some Superhuman sport that requires Top Level Physical attributes for everything.

Completely unaware of the fact that there is a world where even soccer is considered a sport for Girls and Softies. In United States, soccer is the sport in which most kids are first enrolled due to the least risk involved in getting injuried after which the best performing kids move over to real sports like NFL. Nobody lurks around wearing Jerseys of soccer clubs or players which is something associated with Poor South Americans and Mexicans.

I have always heard and thought that Viv was the most popular cricketer from that generation but I'm surprised people here are mentioning Imran and not Viv.. Between Viv and Imran who was popular amongst the masses?

I don't think any cricketer is the answer to the question in OP

I guess Imran was more popular than Viv in South Asia so quantum wise be bad a leg up

Ofcourse I meant between each other not popular in overall sports..

Viv was also pretty popular in Asia I think everyone knew his name atleast even if they weren't his fans.. And in countries like Australia, England, SA, NZ I would assume Viv was more popular than Imran? Would be interesting to hear from someone from that era here on PP not sure who else is there from that era apart from MMHS and Junaids

Imran was probably more popular in AUS & IND, elsewhere Viv.

rofl at the Americans talking crap about footy, you guys are so precious. Rival the Bangladeshi brothers when it comes to sensitivity :))

Michael Jordan. So popular in fact, he still makes ~100m a year from Air Jordan brand.

Apart from the obvious ones, namely Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan, one has to call out David Beckham as a truly global brand.

No cricketers I'm afraid.

In the UK... I would say Imran because of his movie star looks and playboy image, magazine shoots, getting snapped stepping out of nightclubs at 3 a.m. with various blonde beauties.

Richards was a family man earlier on, and quite private. He let his bat do the talking.
