Who would you pick between Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Abbas?

Kevin Petersen on commentary during the recent Test mentioned how he would counter Abbas and why it wouldn't work on Asif. He said he would bat way out of his crease to disrupt the length Abbas is bowling because otherwise you are a sitting duck. He said Abbas doesn't have a serious bumper so there is no need to worry about it. But he said Asif did, so he had to play him from the crease and that's why he had no idea what to do against him.

KP was owned by Asif.

So, that's good analysis.

People are making too much of one bad performance by Abbas. He was just coming off an injury and Sarfraz, Azhar + dodgy umpiring certainly didn't make it any easier costing him two easy wickets he should have had. You're saying Abbas doesn't have a good bumper what about the delivery on which he dismissed Theunis de Bruyn? It was a 128 kph bumper but perfectly directed. Obviously comparing him to Asif is unfair because Asif is a very high ceiling but Abbas is still quality. And even when someone like Finch tried to bat outside the crease against him Abbas knew how to get him out.

Our batsmen didn't give Abbas and Amir a chance to bowl on a 4th day wicket which had gotten legit dangerous by the morning of the 4th day and would have been a real nightmare for South African batsmen if they were chasing anything over 200.

Asif had the height (standing at 6ft4) and the skills to utilise the new ball to full effect. On his day he could run through this South African batting line up to leave them reeling in such conditions.

Abbas may well be unfit and carrying an injury but I genuinely don't think he will succeed on grassless Australian and SA wickets because he isn't tall or quick enough. There are exceptions where I could see him performing such as the Centurion wicket from the first test or that Perth wicket in the Ind v Aus second test given the coverage of some grass but the point is his limitations won't apply for Asif who could take the pitch out of the equation.

Listen to him here from 23:08 mark. Mentions Asif and why he is more difficult than Philander and Abbas :asif

KP:

"Mohammad Asif is a bowler who troubled me"

"I don't know if I was playing badly against Pakistan at the time but he just seemed to hit the rope and by that I mean, hitting the seam"

"I had no idea what he was trying to do. I know we're talking about Philander and Abbas right now and we talk about the position batsmen get into out here, on off stump. Philander and Abbas don't have a good bumper"

"Asif had a good bumper. There's no way that I could have gone to the crease and covered my off stump and taken out four modes of dismissal, because he'd bowl a bouncer and you'll get hit on the head"

"I just found him frightening"
