So its been something which has been in the debate for a number of months now that maybe Babar should come at no 3. Not only Babar and Rizwan have a similar approach towards the game where its not always comfortable for both to put a bowler bowling good balls consistently away by taking that bit of extra risk in the PP but, also the fact that separating the both would mean Pakistan's struggling middle order can get that bit of extra depth and reputation.

Another thing to consider is that Babar's numbers at no 3 are as impressive as anyone playing the role of anchor for their team with an average of almost 50 and SR of 123 (Which is better than other players we have tried at number 3 in last year or so). His last 7 scores at no 3 have been 34*, 50*, 18, 44, 50, 52, 51.

Babar batting at no 3 not only will provide that extra insurance and cushion to the Pakistan's batting lineup but, also will allow the openers to try and utilize the PP as well as they can rather than worrying about losing their wickets.

Even if we look at the other teams the batsmen who are similar to Babar in terms of how they go about their game give or take a bit they bat at no 3 for their side. Eng with Malan (Previously Root), NZ with Williamson, Aus with Smith (Hasnt been part of the lineup recently), India with Kohli and so on.

Only time Babar agreed to come at no 3 in recent times when he was captain was vs SA at home for last T20I which allowed Pakistan to tackle Shami (Babar did that really well) and to win the series and also in Zimbabwe as well as WI where Babar scored 50s.

Maybe its a bit late to talk about it considering the World T20 for Pakistan is on the brink of getting over but, definitely this rigidity from the part of someone with as much quality as class as Babar has been a bit surprising. Wasim Akram mentioned that in a TV show that Babar didnt want to come in at no 3 and thats why they didnt open with Sharjeel and Guptill and some rumors have been floating around recently as well.

Yes Babar and Rizwan have the most 100 stands in T20Is and a number of other things to their names as opening pair however, at the end its about the team and not such milestones. If the current Pakistan's setup needs someone solid at 3, bit more intent in PP and to support overall combination then I dont think the numbers they both have together should take precedent over team requirements. Babar has enough class to be able to perform the same way at no 3 as the numbers that I shared also manifest.

While its late to talk about it but, considering the role Babar will have in our cricket across the formats as a fan I would like him to be more open minded learn, assess, adapt and grow.

I heard Rashid Latif say that Babar doesn't have the ability to score when field is spreda out when he come to bat. He also said Babar needs the 1st 6 overs to get into the groove and by the time the PP is over he gets into a rhytm to carry on.

So, if he has to come to bat in the 8th or 9th over with field spread out he cannot pick the boundaries from the start. Babar needs to develop 4th and 5th gear ASAP. He currently bats only until 3rd gear all through the innings. He can take a leaf out of Kohli as far as building an innings is concerned.

Perso

Well, to me it looks like mental block. He believes he needs the first few overs to settle and he would struggle with the field spread out...

However, that excuse alone doesn't sound the entire truth. There has to be something more...
Does he want to face as many balls as possible ? For his personal stats? Is he scared that someone else might do better than him as an opener and hence Babar might lose his place? Does he not trust any other player as an opener...?
So many questions that we want answered.

imo, Babaf can be very good at hitting in the gaps and rotating the strike, which would definitely suit him perfectly by batting at no.3 or 4.

Babar should actually bat 4 and not 3 with Fakhar opening and Shan batting at 3.

These Aus pitches are doing a lot of early and it's poor tactics to expose your best player when he can be most vulnerable.

He can play the Ifti role with chacha playing the Asif ali role.

Agree, And one more point Babar and Rizwan are makeshift openers, They were middle order batsman's so it should be easier for them to adjust to that rule.

Simple -
He can easily play run a ball or with 110 str rate in first 6 overs and then when set he can take it upto 125.

What I don’t understand is that why is it so taboo to mention that babar and rizwan or even one of them move down the order?

On the Pavilion - apart from stubborn Misbah (who’s idea it was in the first place) - at the start of the World Cup they all wanted to say one of them or both should move down, but we’re noticeably trying to stay tight lipped. Is it instruction from PCB?

I don’t understand the clandestine nature of this all! They are just two players!

What is ailing Babar Azam?

He has been off-key for a while & now has only single digit scores throughout the T20 WC tournament. What is ailing a prolific player like Babar Azam? Captaincy weighing down on him, is it multiple formats fatigue, technical issues cropping up or something else behind the scenes?

Unfortunately he just isn't that good. Cannot play unless everything is in his favour. Most overrated batsman in history. Mentally an absolute minnow.

I’ve been fighting this war for nearly 3 years

There are definitely hidden PCB agendas backing Babar and Rizwan. There is a lot of money to be made with these two and Shaheen as their 3 poster boys.

He doesn’t perform well under pressure. That is reflected by his failures against India. He has been a walking wicket against them in 8 out of 9 innings.

He is like Amla. A prolific scorer and stats-padder in bilaterals but struggles in high pressure, high intensity games.

This is his 7th year in international cricket and he only has 1 iconic knock in LOIs and that too came on a slow pitch with a modest target to chase.

He is so low on confidence right now that he is struggling against minnow attacks too, and today he was completely clueless and flustered from the word go.

Pakistani fans need to stop overrating him and not try to force him into something he is not capable of. He is nothing like Kohli and never will be. Appreciate him for what he is, a quality batsman for our poor batting standards.

He will probably end up on Inzamam, MoYo level not Kohli, Tendulkar, Ponting, Lara level.

Inzi MoYo level was very good, Babar will surpass their records though except Yusufs test sequence in calender year.

Because he's so timid I think even that is a stretch.

Inzy and MoYo may have not been as elegant as Babar but they weren't timid like how Babar has always been.

Babar has had the world on his shoulders with every former cricketer and media outlet taking swipes at his ability without holding back whatsoever.

He responded today with an innings that reflected how he is dealing with that pressure.

Nothing wrong with being mild mannered at all, but it's not disproportionate to say that maybe being all format captain of Pakistan is not the role he should be in. It's time to take a leaf out of Tendulkar's book and follow a different career trajectory.

Early indications are that there is a chance that Haris may open tomorrow and Babar dropping himself at 3.

Wouldn't be against Babar used as a floater. Maybe with Shan and Riz opening with Harris, Iftikhar and Babar/Shadab.

Haris should not open tomorrow its either we pick to Babar and Rizwan or we go with Rizwan and Shan Masood.
