Why can't our youngsters show any improvement?

There is a pattern we are seeing and the reason behind 20 years of rebuilding. The youngsters are given opprounity, they show promise at the start then they stop growing.

Just look at Ahmed Shebzad, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, and Shoaib Maqsood in recent years. A good example would be Hasan Ali being the highest wicket of 2017, and now bowling club level. There is not much difference between what Shadab is today, and when he debuted. Same is the case with Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman. What is the guarantee that Shaheen will improve despite showing promise right now.

Don't tell me that they are not good enough. Shan Masood was called the biggest ****** in Pakistan, written off and dropped but he worked hard like anything and showed likes of Azhar Ali & Asad Shafiq on how to bat in South Africa. He is a rare exception.

Look at the improvement of Pandya and Jasan Roy, it's massive is such short time. I'm not saying or expecting them to be world beaters but show at least 1% of improvement in your game after playing a year or two.

Is it the NCA, the mangement or players having low IQ and lack of motivation to improve their game?

Lack of motivation and lack of seeing the bigger picture.

Lack of desire to improve. Always starts from a young age. They don’t get the fact you have to keep on working on your game.

Yasir Shah is a good example. When he started in the team, he was a good fielder and decent tailender. Somehow his fitness has gone worse and his batting has regressed so much. This guy is a test specialist, what reason does he have not to work on his game? He knew once he became important he wouldn’t be dropped, so stopped working on his game. Yasir should been used in a slip fielding position and a very good tailender, also his bowling should be a good level. In fact he is regressing in all departments with a appalling attitude towards fitness. With his pal Inzi as selector, he knows his place is safe. Also has the experience tag with him.

There are other examples we could go into, but for me this just sums up the lack of desire and the mentality issues in Pakistan cricket .

Babar and Imam have shown good improvement. But I think Mickey is good at improving players . I fear had it been a local coach, things may have gone south.

Indian players have the luxury of going back to the Ranji Trophy, a proper finishing school, iron out their weaknesses and come back a better player.

Whereas Pakistani players having been worked out at international level, return to the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy where the standards are so low they go back to being domestic bullies WITHOUT having worked on their weaknesses, prompting another recall to the national side !

Multiple reasons:

- the players have a weak foundation and once their novelty period is over, they are found out.

- we play minnows often and they often make hay initially before getting exposed against proper opposition.

- most of them come from impoverished backgrounds and they are unable to cope with the sudden fame and money. They get distracted by the material things and lose their work ethic and dedication.

Rhetorical thread without facts on its side:
For the three or four players named one can name another three or four that have improved their game.

If the question were why don’t some players don’t improve while others don’t that’s down to a whole bunch of reasons including that they are not good enough.

If they are not good enough, why do we presist with them?

One of the main reasons, for sure. I also agree with a coupe of points Mamoon made.

Pretty much all the youngsters have improved. You will get someone who won't improve, some are not good enough and some don't want to improve due to many factors.

Look where Babar is?

The questions should be has player like Malik, Hafeez and Sarfraz ever improved an inch in their whole careers. Malik and Hafeez after 20 years don't know how to play. I was at the ground against NZ and it was embarrassing watching Hafeez bat against Lockie, New Zealand supporter next to me asked wheather he's a tail ender promoted to bat up the order.

A few of our players have improved and a few haven't. Babar, Shaheen have improved leaps and bounds. Imam to a certain extent is a much more complete batsman in comparison to when he debuted.

The biggest issue for me are Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali. They have probably regressed rather than gotten better. Expectations were Hasan Ali would become the leader of our pace attack but for now it looks he will be spending some time on the sidelines.

It just seems each time our players have a string of good performances they sort of settle a bit and dont really continue the hard work. The players who are really committed put in the hard hours and are able to improve and perfect their technique. Ours tend to relax. This is my fear for Babar. I hope he is able to continue his good work and hopefully his work ethic can have a positive impact on Imam.

Basically the issue is broadcasting ....we pick our players from PSL name me which countries do that. India have HD coverage of even smaller tournaments i have seen. I heard there are more sports channels which are going to start soon. Even you tube streaming of our tournaments will be a start. Just to give you an example Internet website like PAK Passion have helped our team so much so you can imagine more coverage of our domestic will be help miles

I believe a lot of it is based on mindset. Our players are completely content with being ordinary players.

For them, there is nothing bigger than playing for Pakistan and are completely content with that.

You need to have a want to improve, a want to become the best player in the world which unfortunately you can't say many of these players currently have.

They are okay with being ordinary and that is why they remain ordinary.

It's all about the attitude and mindset. The likes of Imam and Babar are very willing to accept they have weaknesses, and work on them, unlike some other flops.

As Mickey rightly said..if we take what we’ve practiced to the field we can beat anyone. The issue here with our players is lack of self-belief and confidence needed to perform when the entire world is watching. This turns on their defensive mode which literally sets the tone for the game. We play best when we attack and know we’ve got no other option but to win.
