"Why diet like Kohli when you can hit longer sixes than him?" : Afghanistan's Mohammad Shahzad

What a character he is.

Why diet like Kohli when you can hit longer sixes than him, says Shahzad

At over 90kg, Mohammad Shahzad is the complete antithesis of fitness freak Virat Kohli but the Afghan wicketkeeper-batsman says who needs a punishing regimen like the Indian captain when he can hit longer sixes than the world’s No.1 ODI batsman.

Standing at 5’8”, there is seldom a dull moment when the stockily-built Shahzad is around, both on and off the field.

“Dekhiye hum fitness bhi poori karte hain aur khaate bhi poora hain (I work a lot on my fitness but I don’t compromise on food). You want me to have a fitness routine like Kohli, it is not possible, but I am working on it (losing weight),” Shahzad tells PTI in a chat.

The burly 30-year-old cricketer, who has had an eventful international career dating back to 2009, simply plays by his own rules.

He knows he is overweight but doesn’t doubt his ability one bit, so much so that he believes that he can hit bigger sixes than Kohli despite not having the exemplary fitness and skill possessed by the Indian captain.

Having played in a refugee camp in Pakistan, the Jalalabad-based player speaks urdu fluently and also passes the hindi test. Remind him of his weight again, Shahzad says not everyone can be like Kohli.

“Jitna lamba chakka woh (Kohli) maarte hain, main unse zyadaa maar saktaa hoon, zaroorat kya hain unki tarah itna diet karne ki (I can hit bigger sixes than Kohli so why do I need to follow his diet?),” says the stumper, whose failed attempts at weight-loss had resulted in a one-year doping ban last year.

He spends a lot of time in India and claims to know top Indian cricketers well. He calls M S Dhoni his “closest friend” in the Indian team and also enjoys a good rapport with Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan (he continuously calls India opener ‘Shekhar’).

The cricketer has often faced criticism for being ‘overweight’ but he has hit back at his critics with match-winning performances. He has defied the odds to become Afghanistan’s leading run-getter in T20s and is second only to Mohammad Nabi in ODI runs.

“...my coach (now Phil Simmons) knows that I can keep for 50 overs and bat for 50 overs. I have never seen it (weight) as an issue,” says Shahzad, who is preparing in India with the team for its maiden Test in Bengaluru in June.

He has won his team many games but has also been in the news for wrong seasons. He recently got back into the team after a serving a one-year doping ban.

Then he copped a two-game suspension as recent as March during the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe for causing damage to the ground after being upset at his dismissal.

He returned to deliver a ‘man of the match’ performance in the final of the World Cup qualifier against the West Indies.

And then two weeks later, his country’s cricket board, ACB, pulled him up for playing a local tournament in Peshawar without its permission and summoned him back to base.

So, why is he the way he is?

“Dekhiye galti toh insaan se hi hoti hain (To err is human). I have had two cups of coffee with you and who knows I might test positive after this,” says the attacking opener who also regrets not being selected for Afghanistan’s maiden World Cup appearance in 2015.

He is liked both for his antics and his ballistic strokeplay. He has won fans in India for his Dhoni-like execution of the ‘helicopter shot’

“I try to hit it like Dhoni,” he says before opening up on his rapport with the Indian cricketers.

“It is always nice to catch up with the Indian cricketers. They are very warm. I have always looked up to Dhoni and now I have the pleasure of knowing him. I have played against India three-four times and after the match gets over, I have dropped in at Dhoni’s room and chatted for hours.

“He usually asks me ‘what’s happening in Afghanistan’ and at my home. We don’t tend to talk a lot about wicket-keeping and batting, it is just regular stuff about life. His room is always open for a chat but yes, it is tough to reach him on his mobile number.

“Even Suresh and Shikhar bhai are very warm people,” says Shahzad, who like most of his teammates, is a Bollywood fan, his favourite actors being Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan.

Come June 14, Shahzad will become part of history when his team takes the field against India in a Test match for the very first time.

“It will be some occasion. Earlier, the goal was to qualify for the World Cup. We have done that and now it is all about the Test against India.”

Ask him about Kohli’s possible absence from the historic match as he might be playing county cricket in England, Shahzad says playing against the Indian skipper would be more fun.

“It will be more fun and challenging if he plays. If he is not there, it will be a problem for India’s batting, we have no issues. But we would want to watch him play.”

He is also pleased with the fact that all of his teammates have overcome struggles to become world-class players, ensuring a brighter future for the aspiring youth in the war-torn nation.

Shahzad ends the long conversation with a gem after being asked about his family.

“Bahut badi family hain ji, ginte ginte raat ho jayegi (it will take a whole night to recall the names of all my family members). I have two kids, six siblings and my mother. It is always nice to go back to them whenever I get a small break from cricket,” he signs off.

Hitting bigger sixes doesn’t get you 8 or 10 runs. Whether you hit a 70 M six or a 100 M six , result is going to be the same- A SIX.

Question is can he(or people with the same mindset) take 20-25 singles, 10-12 doubles and a few triples in their innings with a body weight of mini whale? Its not like you can get all the runs through boundaries all the time.

My hero.

So now expect some programs on our well known TV programs telling us why Mickey Arthur's fitness tests are useless.

to those who question like that. Sharjeel Khan was an example. MA never dropped him , gave him a test debut too, and he is in his long term plan where SK failed and thrashed his hopes.

MA is a smart man, if you are fat but can bat like SK and give quick runs at the top, u will get a test career too...

Dude, don't have to take his lighthearted comment seriously. Of course he needs to work on his fitness. Overall I enjoyed reading every bit of that interview.

The problem is, hitting longer sixes won't give you extra runs but runing faster will. VK is very quick between wickets and converts singles into doubles and doubles into triples without taking much risks. Most of the runs he scores is because he is FIT.

Take it easy. He is only kidding. Basically finding a way out of a difficult question.

Well he's guaranteed to hit bigger and more sixes than Kohli in the upcoming Test.

T20 puppies gettin it in the head.

Let him spend five days grinding it out in a test match, and he'll understand the meaning of fitness.

Shahzad got the answer today I believe. Never mind, it is a learning process for him.

No need to compare VK with Shehzad.Shehzad isn't even fit to polish shoes of VK in cricketing aspects.A fat belly cricketer ,size and shape of a hippopotamus can only get into Afgan side. LOL.

So what’s the difference between a 85 meter six and 87 meter six. LOL!

IF he doesn’t start dieting, he gonna get RUN OUT between the wickets!! LOL AND HE JUST DID IN THE LAST MATCH!!

Rip logic...

Never liked this guy. Always looks like he thinks he’s some rockstar but is a mediocre man playing for minnows trying to do the same hoga apnay ghar ka sher scenario before having his backside bun handed to him.

I hope kai usko jawaab mil gaye hoga!
Kohli is a future ATG and to say such things about him is ridiculous.

My elder brother who is now happily married always told me to never be friends with the kind of people who tend to hit a man when he’s down. I won’t be friends with most of the haters in this thread for sure. They don’t deserve bhaijaan’s friendship. Shezzy is a good chap likes bit of fun. Nothing wrong in a man enjoying his life. Move on you sad people.

I hope you get invited to his birthday party. You earned it

I love this guy's attitude. Very likable person too. One of my favourite players in the world.

It is a sin to be holding that kinda belly while playing for your country esp.

This self-assured bother lone arrogant statement is something a Pakistani player would say. Unlike them Shehzad is able to walk the talk while they make themselves look like fool. Razzaq's comment on Shehzad's talent for example.

Love characters like him in cricket. What a player!!!

Mohd Shahzad is funny and is always in good spirits. Banter apart, with that huge belly and his obvious dislike for running, he is totally unfit for the game. That to some extent is also reflected in his wicket keeping which at times seems too casual. Not a role model for the next generation of Afghans looking to play cricket

He is one happy dude though and I would have him as the 12th man just to keep the positive energy around rest of the team

OMGH, ROFL. This is epic and now I can see why this bloke is always happy. In his own words he has the two things he desires most, food & sleep. Hats off for his uncandid talk.

Brilliant innings from Shahzad. He was clear in his mind that he was going to attack the opening bowlers regardless of the opposition. This is the type of mentality that Fakhar needs to adapt. Go for your shots man. Some will come off and some won't. As long as your clear in your head what your role is, getting runs shouldn't be a problem

Good innings from Shahzad today but he is not fit for playing cricket for his country. Fakhar is good the way he is.

Even Afghanistan’s WK batsman is better than our captain fantastic.

Fitness and diet are over rated. As long as you can hit the ball you are alright :)

To be honest, over coaching can destroy batsmen and bowlers as well. Have seen it happen to so many players. Irfan Pathan is a clear example.

Pakistan should look to invest in more fat cricketers.

*Mohammed Shahzad
*Rohit Sharma
*Kamran Akmal

He got run-out while taking an easy single in a test match against INDIA.

74* of 16 balls in T10 today with 6 fours and 8 sixes.

He faced 2 balls without hitting a boundary, disappointing stuff.

Wow, this guy must be an inspirition for lazy Pakistani players who too can't diet like Kohli.

Yeah that’s a ridiculous innings.

That youtube video was funny.. Faff first laughs off what Shazhad says about Steyn being easier to play on that wicket. And than basically says the same thing.

I remember he said this and then played a test against India in which he got run-out taking a single which most batsmen would have made it to.

Seems like his international career is over. Can’t see him making a comeback now that Rahmanullah Gurbaz is on the scene.

Also Shahzad’s weight problems seem to be getting even worse now.

Minister Group Dhaka opener Mohammad Shahzad has been reprimanded for smoking on the field during the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Some pics of the wicketkeeper-batsman smoking on the field had gone viral on social media on Saturday (February 4).

The Bangladesh Cricket Board took note of the pics and has reprimanded the cricketer. While he hasn't been fined, a demerit point has been added to Shahzad's account. There was no official hearing for the matter.

Dhaka were scheduled to face Comilla Victorians in the 20th match of the tournament in Dhaka but the match was abandoned due to rain. With 3 wins from 7 matches, Dhaka are placed at the 3rd spot in the points table, They have suffered 3 defeats while their previous match was abandoned. They have 7 points in their account.

Dhaka will next face Chattogram Challengers on Tuesday (February 8) before taking on Khulna Tigers the next day. Their last league stage fixture will take place on February 11.

Shahzad will stay in Bangladesh after his BPL stint as Afghanistan are scheduled to face the home team in 3 ODIs and 2 T20Is from February 23 to March 4.

The right-handed batsman hasn't enjoyed much success in BPL 2022 and has managed 120 runs in 6 matches. He averages 20.00 and has struck at 123.71.
