Why does cricket produce chuckers?

I have long thought the answer to this question. A chucker doesn't grow on trees and suddenly comes in to international cricket. Every cricketer plays a lot of cricket in various levels, and then they are selected to play International cricket.

What baffles me is that a chucker plays so much cricket right from his school days, and yet no one is able to identify that there is a problem with his action? It's only possible when everyone turns a blind eye to his action and he is drafted to international cricket, and then his action comes under scrutiny.

I honestly believe that chucking is blatant cheating, and such bowlers should be asked to remodel their action right when they are at the grassroots level.

I was watching videos over youtube today of some matches and saw Saeed Ajmal's action once again, and it absolutely repulsed me. And before anyone points a finger at me, I'll say that even Harbhajan Singh's action is dodgy. Pragyan Ojha's action was doggy as well, and he hasn't played international cricket since.

It's good that the ICC has finally took responsibility and started banned chuckers aka blatant cheats since the last few years.

Why do you think we see chuckers in international cricket? Do people not see what's blatantly obvious to us fans when those cricketers at at the grassroots level?

Due to the stupidity of ICC. Saeed Ajmal was banned, but ICC was sleeping when Murali and Bhajji were chucking.

Absolutely. When Murali and Harbhajan were chucking right, left, and center, the ICC was quiet. It has done so much harm to the game. Just imagine how many wickets they illegally took, and how much of an unfair advantage they got.

You can't say about Murali,he was born with deformity but doosra should have been banned during that time.

I'll agree here. The doosra has given birth to quite a few chuckers. Murali was the most blatant chucker the game has ever seen, closely followed by Ajmal.

Sometimes you develop a chuck over time because of muscle imbalances and just scar tissue from repetitive movements. So you might start off a lot better in your early years

Only recently ICC has strict rules against it. Post 2010. No one really knew about this rule before and even coaches didn't looked at this. But now you'll see the change, infact it is already happening. You don't see many new right arm off spinners now in international Cricket.

This rule is being adopted in all levels but what is it doing is discouraging young players to pursue their careers as right arm off spin.

It's a bloody shame that Murali was allowed to continue chucking. Absolute daylight robbery. Anyone could tell first hand with a naked eye that he is single biggest chucker the game has ever seen.

Agree completely

They actually did prove that he didn't chuck actually, take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZTazLtZyxw

theres a huge difference between wearing a brace during a net, and going all out during a test on the fifth day when ur knackered and teams relying on u to close out the opposition. murali could definitely bowl with a clean action but no way did he do that consistently in his career.

theres an excellent interview by saqi on utube, where he gives pbly the best, and most candid explanation of the chucking epidemic ive ever heard.

in a nutshell his hypothesis (based on personal experience) was no one chucked on purpose, but as off spinners got tired, or try to bowl quicker on a flat dead deck they let a chuck slip in here and there.

i forever professed the innocence of saqi when it came to chucking, i mean he never got called or suspected ever, and even he admitted, if only implicitly, that when he was tired, at times his action wasn't a hundred percent clean, but no one ever picked it.

Because off spin is a defensive art with less scope for variations. Offies seek an edge in their repertoire in the form of doosra (equivalent of googly for leggies) but unfortunately it isn't possible to bowl it without violating ICC's chucking rule. The rule is perfect, unfortunately it hasn't been implemented properly in the past allowing the likes of Murali, Harbhajan and Ajmal to make a mockery of the sport.
