What's new

Why does India's World Cup campaign start so much later?

Wasn't the World Cup schedule announced 15 or so months back? What's the point in whining now?

Yes people should have whined then as this issue would have been different then.

That doesn’t any sense.
We’re talking about the tournament and it’s start date...

If you play the bi lateral series card then you can go back in history and see how many teams played bi laterals in a host country just prior to the start of the tournament. But this is not the point here.
Then consider this history in making that after IPL , 2 weeks, India not playing. Minor adjustments like this schedule or postponement of world cup by a week was practical decision by Icc

The tone of my opening thread???

What is wrong with some people here?
I explained exactly why I opened the thread!
I actually don’t want any team to have an advantage or disadvantage... I just want an enjoyable World Cup where every team starts on the same playing field...

I only realised India’s late participation because I was looking forward to watching them play over the weekend...

Indian fans too aren't happy with this too. Just saying.

How does it feel to be in an ICC competition without India’s participation?

We haven’t missed much tbh, the World Cup even in its 1st week has been enthralling:)) :))

Because ICC is a nobody without BCCI and India generates the highest revenue for ICC and Indian team are entitled to special privileges and have the power to schedule a world tournament according to their needs. Just deal with it!

This attitude of ICC will never let cricket grow. Havent seen any other sporting body being influenced because one team brings in more sponsors. Its just childish and unprofessional.

One of the reasons that any solid expansion of cricket around the globe is close to 0 in last 2-3 decades as ICC love to work in its close circles doing all sorts of non professional decision making along with shady things just to maximize the revenue and keeping certain groups happy.

By the time India play their first game, most teams would have wrapped up a couple of games; whether that will prove to be a boon or a bane, time will tell

IPL just happened

Its months long

Need a break

Lodha Commission has been set up by the order of Supreme Court of India. And nothing is above SC of India be it ICC or anything..If ICC had a problem why didnt they do anything, coz they knew that its not the BCCI that has set up LODHA COMMISSION. U want ICC to fight with SUPREME COURT of INDIA. At least do some fact finding before posting.

I don't know what you know, but please do not speak on laws as if you have any idea about them. This maybe the worst legal analysis I have may have ever seen in my entire life.

1. The ICC and Supreme Court of India (SCI) have absolutely nothing to do with each other. One cannot be higher than the other because they are two separate things that govern completely separate things. This sentence could not make less sense if you tried.

2. Saying your first point was true even if it is nonsensical. The Lodha commission was set up to give recommendations, just like most committees on earth. You can google this yourself, I am sure you didn't because you are biased towards your own country.

3. ICC telling India no about resting after IPL would not have started any fight with the SCI because, it was not an SCI decision, and the SCI have no jurisdiction over these things anyway. The BCCI can also tell the Lodha committee to shut up because the committee have absolutely 0 power.

4. It is very clear since the BCCI owns the ICC that India was given this schedule. Whether or not it gives them an advantage is a different issue. Please research before you post blind patriotic comments.

A lot of people played cricket before hand. Why do Indian players only get special reprieve. Dale Steyn is now out of the tournament, maybe cause he played IPL. You want your players to be fit for the World Cup? Pull them out of the IPL. No one gets special treatment. If Afg asked for this they would have been told to shut up.

India start so late cos of two reasons:

- they did not want to play in Ramadan
- they want to see if they can avoid playing Pakistan altogether (forfeit points)

Most likely coz of the IPL. If other teams had a problem with it then they should have complained then. Entering late in the tournament is often not a good thing.

It's BCCI power and stature at play. So is it some pressure to ICC to make sure their players have more rest days after IPL??

Look at the bright side. India is at bottom of points table right now

Crazy to think it will be SA's 3rd game and Ind's 1st

India have advantage over other teams now because (a) The team is fresh b) Indian coaches have seen the other team's games which will help them make plans for each player (c) South Africa played two hard fought games which takes a lot out of players (d) South Africa will be under a lot of pressure. It can't afford to lose three matches on the trot.
BCCI has forced ICC to change the WC schedule once again. This is unfair and is not acceptable.

This thread will grow up to few more pages if India loses tomorrow :P

I don't think India will have any advantage due to this scheduling as the advantage should be with the team who have already played couple of matches in this tournament and with SA situation right now, I don't think it will be easy for India tomorrow.

ICC should not have accepted this request from India to start late in this tournament, It is just wrong!

Having it your way is not always the best way.

this tireness might just bite you in the ......, its a must win game for SA, so they will be playing for their lives, gonna be tough start for india.

Sa have lost too many must win games often against india. So India should win.

Thanks you well wishing neighbor :D
Even Pakistan would have felt like it's a must win game after loosing two games to England in bilateral, then we know what happened :afridi

A well rested Sharma ji and Bumrah ji is what the doctor ordered after a tough fought IPL finals :yk :uakmal

Will India take a break for 15 days if it goes to the semis as well? As playing 9 ODI matches in group stages might be too much for the athletic bodies. :wahab2

Not a bad idea :D you should have posted these ideas on Bcci.tv comments and that would have been considered and passed on to our little brother ICC :uakmal
But it's too late for that now :sree

Our teams average age is 30+ so the old bones underneath our athletic bodies need some protiens and calcium to settle in, while playing paint ball and spa :kohli hence the delay is totally justified

Summed up nicely by Virat in his presser today

Q. How does that work for you? Is that a problem? Is that an advantage that you have seen some of the other teams? How do you look at that?

VIRAT KOHLI: I think it is a bit of an advantage, I have to say, in terms of understanding how the games have gone, what the conditions have to offer, what the overcast conditions bring into play when the sun is out.

It's a totally different ball game altogether what the conditions are at 10.30 in the morning compared to afternoon. And what is the pace of play, when you see other teams playing and what the approach is. So I think from that point of view, we have a lot to absorb. We have a lot to learn from, looking at the other teams play, the teams that have done well, what have they done well and in what phases?

From that point of view, we would say that we have a lot of positives that we can take out of starting after everyone else.

And look, whether a team has played before or not, it really wouldn't matter on the day. It depends on how the side turns out, what kind of mental set-up they have and we have to be mentally and skillfully stronger than the opposition whoever we play to win on the day, so I think our focus will be that.

if that true then there's no point to discuss this now.. and also you can't blame IPL for same reason..

The rest of the world is playing cricket..... meanwhile the Indian team:

This is what privilege looks like.

:)))

Glad we won after all the rest lol

A good start for India- now the real challenge begins, can they keep up with the intense schedule?

India toiling hard to beat this low class SA B team, wonder what will happen against the Aussies

Only team to start so late is a fair point..

Only team in the whole tournament to play two games in three days - against Eng and Ban as well..

Fair point? You bet!

Evens out....especially with cramped up scheduled and running a higher risk of injuries.

I see that the OP is asking the question that the tournament should have started late for everyone.Had that happened then..

"Jeez! Look at the ICC bending backwards for a domestic tournament - shame on you ICC"

Now that they have taken a call to not postpone the tournament (but for Indian matches) "Jeez! Look at the ICC providing unfair advantage to their cash cow - shame on you ICC".

Granted that the BCCI could have scheduled their matches better, but what is the ICC's fault in this when they are bound by a SC verdict.

For once you got to pity the ICC!
