Why does the present Indian team look so dominant in Australia but weak in England/New Zeland?

They looked pretty comfortable in Australia in 2018 and 2020 against an Australian attack which was regarded as the best in the world in both the series and they came out on top twice in succession with their A team and then later their C team.

However the same Indian team has lost their last few series in England i.e. 2014, 2018 and their last few series in NZ i.e. 2015 and 2018.

To me this clearly indicates the following

- Indian batsmen are very comfortable on the fast flat wickets in Australia where the ball rarely swings, seams

- The Australian team in general has a mental block against the Indian team and just go on the defensive against them. The way the Australian side recently bottled it when they had a 1-0 lead against an Indian side without Kohli, riddled with injuries and Bubble fatigue was very telling. I have never seen an Australian side with all their A players available playing with such a scared to lose mentality

- Indian batsmen while being absolute masters on flat placid wickets get shown up on wickets with grass and seam/swing on offer. I found it absolutely riddiculous the manner in which Pant played with total disregard and disrespect to the pitch conditions and opposition. I mean you are playing test cricket for your country on the biggest stage, show some actual guts and grind it out, this play your shots fearlessly T-20 style batting is not going to work on difficult pitches.

- Kohli's captaincy is incredibly over rated. He reminds me of Michael Clarke's gung ho attack at all costs with utter disregard for the match situation, pitch conditions. All those praising him for picking a balanced bowling attack with 3 pacers and 2 spinners were just buying into the hype whereas NZ picked their side based on the pitch conditions and their strengths. Jadeja lets be real is a hack of a batsman who does not have the ability to grind out a test match innings in tough situations when the team demands it.

- India perhaps has their best bowling attack in history but i think they also need to stop buying into this hype that their world class bowling attack is going to bail out their inspid batting line up most of the times.

- Pujarra is another guy whom i feel is just an Indian HTB or an Australian bully, he is always found wanting in conditions where the ball seams and swings. Atleast Kohli has evolved his game but my goodness Kohli must be going through the biggest lean patch of his career, i can't remember the last century he scored in any format, he is just very lucky that Team India has the best bowling attack ever in its history and that the team for the most part keeps winning which takes the attention of his batting.

The Indian batsmen are comfortable with pace and bounce but struggle with swing and seam movement.

Most of the Indian batsmen grow up playing on placid wickets in the Ranji trophy where they can play shots on the up and front foot shots are their bread and butter. In England, front foot shots especially through the covers and mid-wicket are the most risky shots, and the cover drive and the on drive are the most prolific shots for Indian batsmen. In India, to a ball directed to your pads, you can whip it though the midwicket. In England, you have to play it with a straight bat down to long on. Playing across the line will get you lbw unlike in India.

The young Indian batsmen get exposure to very quick pacers in the IPL and so are not necessarily intimidated by sheer pace and bounce, but they don't get exposure to english conditions anywhere in India, which is why they always struggle in England and NZ. Earlier Indian batsmen used to play in the county championship, but current Indian bats don't get the time due to packed international schedule and hence they get found out.

because Indian batsmen have more ability and arent cowered by Australia.

Pakistan's issues are more mental than anything else in Australia.

They have played and won in harder conditions in England. Against Australia there is far more mental scarring

Australian batting is mediocre now.It only has two decent batsmen.Any decent side can beat Australia in Australia now.

We can't play seam and swing for nuts.

We play batsman who either dont have the technique or patience to play relentless swing, thats what we get against England and NZ with their 3-4 quality seam bowling options.

Further they are so set in their ways, noone adapts. Almost everyone is batting out of their crease following Kohli's 2018 Eng series approach, could have easily tried to allow the ball to come to them and play late.

Plus any new guy who comes blasts off with a bang in his first 5 games then fades away.

Cases in point: Shaw, Gill, Agarwal, Vihari.

That's why we continue to rely on the iffy Pujara and Rahane, and the ageing never-has-been Rohit.

I think the bowlers are ineffective, which is more of the issue, Indians quicks have always struggled in NZ for example, look at Kapil Dev, he has out bowled Imran in the WI and has the stats for the best quick from the sub continent in Australia, but come NZ his stats looked like a bowler from Bangladesh...

The answer is simple.

Our middle order averages 30 for the last 10 tests or so.

It has been mediocre for a long time now.

Kohli used to score in 2018.

Not anymore.

Add in average openers and you have a poor batting lineup.

If thats the case, then how come we did well in Aus?

Thats also simple.

2018 series - Pujara magical series and introduction of Mayank who played like a champ

2020 series - Gill played like a champ and lower order of Pant, Jaddu, Washington, shardul, Ashwin contributed. Pujara managed some great blockathons and Rahane came up with a match winning knock out of nowhere.

Hence we won.

Summary:

We have a non existent battinv lineup for years now.

We rely on individual brilliance, lucky knocks and lower order resistance to be competitive in SENA.

Thats why we lose so many games there.

The end.

I have answered this question many times. India have actually done very well in Australia for very long time and not just the last two series they were only kept at bay by a very strong Australian teams in the past.

This is because bouncy but true batting wickets suit Indian batsmen who are good players of pace bowling. So the batting has always been able to compete with Australia or better them.
