Why has Pakistan played so little ODI Cricket since the 2019 ODI World Cup?

They were showing the number of ODI matches all teams had played since the 2019 ODI WC and India was leading the chart with 54 ODI games since the 2019 ODI WC. Teams like England, Australia on avg had played 36-40 ODI's but to my utter shock Pakistan was second last on the list and has only played 24 ODI's since the 2019 ODI WC.

Ehsan Mani, Wasim Khan, Ramiz Raja have been in charge of the PCB during the last 3-4 years. Will they ever be held to account as to why did they not fight for Pakistan's case in the ICC and get the ICC to allot Pakistan a reasonable number of ODI games in comparison to teams like India, England, Australia?

This is just shocking incompetence and mismanagement and something that is very likely going to hurt our under cooked ODI side big time in India when the 2023 ODI WC arrives.

Don't think ICC has anything to do here. Respective boards are responsible for arranging series/tours. ICC has no saying in that. Pakistan has played second highest number of T20 games since last cricket WC, that may be because of the two world cups during that period but the Pakistan board seem to have not bothered to arrange for more ODI games. ICC has nothing to do here.

Don't see any other reason than there being more money in T20 cricket and pleasing the sponsors (more viewership during T20's).

So no extra efforts from the board to arrange extra ODI's. Infact they converted a few ODI's series to T20's.

playing odis in non wc years is fairly pointless, t20 have better viewership and lower risk of injuring players.

also the fact that OP was shocked shows how little they are missed, when for the old school fans, the lack of tests would never come as a surprise.

Unprofessional administration, mercenary mindset of players, lack of public interest & dearth of quality players to begin with...India played 54 compared to our 24 out if which 9 are against minnows

Countries pull out, we were suppose to have been playing odis agianst Newzealand last year. Than the Afg sereis which were originally odis.

We should had played atleast 35 odis

Also odis are boring and dont make that much money that t20 does. Pakistan is enjoying hosting t20s as its short and you can get games done quickly in a span of few days. While odi needs more rest time.

In recent years, the popularity of Twenty20 (T20) cricket has grown significantly due to the rise of domestic T20 leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Cricket boards might prioritize T20 matches over ODIs to cater to this trend.

no one cares about odis outside of the world cup, i know ppl disagree on this forum but its the truth, no one has 9 hours to kill for a game that doesnt mean anything.

Yeah that's true.. T20 matches are shorter in duration, typically lasting around three hours, making them more suitable for fans with limited time. The fast-paced nature of the game, with quick overs and high-scoring action, keeps viewers engaged throughout the match.

Both T20 and ODI Bilateral series have no value and the crowds have started to vote with their feet. We are now in the era of Franchise and WC cricket.

Money and money only.

Remember we had 3 ODI's scheduled against Afghanistan this year which were changed to t20's for the $$$$.

Luckily we have a solid ODI side and aren't feeling the force of a lack of preparation too much.

Yet somehow the team looks good...if the right squad is picked. The Asia Cup squad has some oddities...is Shaqfique worth the squad space while the top order already has Imam, Zaman and Babar? Is there really a need for 4 spinners who can bat a bit?

It's a dying format.

Only WC(and qualifying matches) has any context.
Don't agree with it!... ODI Cricket has its own taste.

The slightly longer duration of ODIs allows players more time to recover from setbacks and adapt their strategies.

Can't comment on other countries but ODI's are way more alive in India than Tests are. Random ODi series earlier this year had more than twice the views that any Test this season, including WTC final, had.

They are not dying organically. If ODI's were given half the importance that Tests were given, they'd be thriving.

Pakistan has been playing more T20 cricket for quite some time because many teams either do not want to come to Pakistan or they want to come only to play T20 and then leave quickly.

There is no doubt that this will affect Pakistan's for the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Maybe this will explain our struggles in the ODI format especially in the Asia Cup and the current WC

1) Pakistan vs Sri Lanka in Pakistan 2019

- Weak Sri Lankan team, Pakistan won 2-0

2) Pakistan vs Zimbabwe in Pakistan 2020

- Pakistan won 4-1

3) Pakistan vs South Africa in South Africa 2021

- Pakistan won 2-1. Keep in mind that most Premier South African players had left for the IPL and the South African used the series to play their bench

4) Pakistan vs England in 2021

- Pakistan lost 3-0 to an England C/D team as all the main English players were laid down by Covid

5) Pakistan vs Australia in 2022

- Australian rested Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood, Warner, Smith and even then Pakistan could only win 2-1

6) Pakistan vs West Indies in 2022

- Comfortable Pakistan win 3-0

7) Pakistan vs New Zealand in 2023

- New Zealand beat Pakistan 2-1 with all their main players playing except for Bolt

8) Pakistan vs New Zealand in 2023

- Pakistan won 4-1 even though NZ rested the likes of Williamson, Conway Ferguson, Satner and Co

9) Asia Cup 2023

- Disastrous tour with a brutal trashing by India

10) ODI WC 2023

- Brutal trashing by India

Comments: In reality, our players because of an over dose of excessive T20 Cricket, have lost the ability and fortitude to play ODI Cricket in the last 4 years.

PCB also needs to be held responsible for not being able to hold sufficient quality ODI matches. Going forward their needs to be a policy where if the opposition is weak then Pakistan too must play their bench strength and not worry about win, losses.

The number of ODIs are declining with every passing year and it is the case for every team.

Doesn't matter, PCB needs to do whatever is in the best interest of the Pakistani team i.e. 12-15 ODI's per year against top teams.

I feel that ODIs are a much better test of a cricketer's ability and real cricket fans always put them ahead of T20s. Pakistan should aim to play atleast an equal number of ODI and T20I matches.

ODI has lost its popularity.

People are more occupied with T20. Purists love Test. ODI is only relevant during CT, Asia Cup, and World Cup.

People will always want to watch ODI Cricket played by quality teams and players. Just need to schedule them smartly. Scheduling ODI's a week after a grueling T-20 tournament or the IPL is not smart

It isn't but you have to remember the IPL is 8 weeks long. That's 14 % of the calendar year gone because of one domestic T20 tournament so there isn't much room to space out these games outside of this windows. It has to be crammed in.

So true this.. Pak should focus more on T20s and play less ODIs. T20s are the future. ODI is a dying breed and that's coming from someone who used to watch 5days tests and ODIS in the 90s. In the 90s and 00s , teams used to play 40-45 ODIs per year.

Stop playing Tests and just play ODIs in that time frame instead. Tests are pointless for Pakistan

We just played the Netherlands in a 3 match series.

ICC makes the future tour program. It's not all about PCB.

Wasim Akram during program on A-Sports talks about Pakistan getting less ODIs:

"When we used to play cricket, at least we had 32-35 one day in a year. Alright, I can imagine. Another format has come - T20 has come. But now, the gap was increasing in Test cricket. Big countries, you know, big nations, cricket playing nations, then the upcoming nations. And this also starts happening in one day cricket. And the gap is increasing."

It's not fair that Pakistan is getting fewer ODI matches than the Big 3. This is a problem because all cricket teams should have an equal chance to play and show their skills.

Even if you schedule big 3 teams play some potential players rather than regular players. Pakistan should start with their under-19 set up where all teams play their best XI. They have to have a goal of reaching u19 final. When was the last time they reached/

On top of it, they are very much happy to send an uncle's team with an average age of 26 officially to emerging asia cup(which was supposed to be under 23) .Now a days pcb is all about short term benefits such as Jam packed t20, picking wrong teams and coaches etc.
