What's new

Why is Canada among the top liveable countries?

How come Quebec has comparatively less immigrants?
Most likely the language barrier. Montreal is the only real possibility for a non-French immigrant - but GTA has been growing like no tomorrow, so the lure of Montreal has faded a bit.

Not sure if this has been posted before but this is the most beautiful thing I have seen in 2015 especially considering the background to the song and also the background to Canada the country

I think you have a habit of generalizing things.

To end this debate, yes it can be hard but not impossible. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants have achieved success in Canada. I can give you two examples in quick and short manner: one in his mid 30's came to Canada in 2007 (Air Force background) and in 2009 he was hired by Toronto Police - now he earns close to $100,000.

Second guy in his early 40's came to Canada with his family in 2015 February and within a month he got a job in IT worth 90k.

Your habit of generalizing and painting everyone with the same brush is not a good thing. Some people achieve success and some don't. It can be done though.

How did it happen brother ?

Ok here is the intention. The intention is to have more people in Canada. Provinces like Saskatchewan and Manitoba needs people but people don't want to move out there, they all want to live in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Edmonton. On what basis are they going to let people in ? The Point system was introduced so there is no discrimination towards people based on skin colour. Every country wants to protect its culture, practices and so does Canada. Canada want to protect its people and their education, simple as that. "People" = residents of all colour. The Canadian government knows that their employers are protecting their local population, so they turn blind eye to it. Again you are promised a better life not a better life with a career you had.

Canada doesn't need educated people, they wan't educated people but it doesn't need educated people because we already have well educated citizens. The jobs that are needed are nanny work, temporary construction workers, farm workers and so on. They are not educated but hey Canada needs people to do these jobs and guess what ? no one wants to do them so they let people who possess "skill" which includes farming, care takers, construction workers. This is an indication that you are not disrespected based on your qualification, race or gender.

At the end of the day. Canada wants educated population at the same time they need "skilled labours" so they get into the country as well.

There are two immigration channels . First is FSW , which is general .

Second is provincial nominations. They provinces which have shortage are allowed a quota to nominate, so that takes care of the first part of what you said.

If what you say is correct in second part , then Canada Should have occupational lists consisting of Farmers , Nannies , construction workers . Why Have them for Physiotherapists , Purchasing managers , property administrators ?

Crimes are high in Canada especially in Greater Toronto Area. Shootings and stabbings and other crimes are happening more frequently now multiple times in a week.

what is the reason of rise in crimes ?

I see , did not know that before.

I would be staying in Mississagua , will be based there . How is that place ?

Went there recently. A very diverse city with a significant Pakistani population.

Mississauga is the safest city in the whole country, nothing to worry about here :)

Thanks :)

Good to hear that its safe , it would have been tough to change now , would not be allowed . Nice to hear that People from sub continent there , so can expect some help . My colleague would be going one week before me though .

There are a lot of 'ghettos' in the GTA
The crime spiked this year inexplicably - though I think that's probably because of economic slowdown for youth and relentless increase in asset prices, creating an incentive to resort to violence.

That being said, in comparison to some of the safest large US cities (such as those in Northern California), Toronto is still virtually crime free. Here are the homicide rates (i.e. # per 100000) of selected North American cities:

Toronto: 2.0
Atlanta: 19.0
Chicago: 18.5
San Francisco: 8.6
San Jose: 4.6
NYC: 5.1

You are right , crime rates in US are very high. I hope Canada Government looks into this matter .

For 10 - 15 months .

But cannot change the location for first few months . Good public transport is important factor for me.

what has it to do with age ? :13:

If you are young Mississauge is a horrible place to live, but if you are like in the late 20s it doesn't matter too much. Enjoy your stay in Canada.

A leather jacket would most definitely not be adequate in the Canadian winter. If you have a couple of warm sweaters that you can layer with then a leather jacket could be used, however in most cases you need a down jacket.

You can get a winter jacket (with down) for anything from $150 to 1000 and beyond. Snow shoes generally cost 100-200 but I've never really invested in one since I do not have to walk long distances to take public transport/use my car..

There are second hand stores known as the Salvation Army (search for the one nearest to you on Google). Now personally I have never bought anything from SA but I assume they thoroughly clean it but it won't hurt to wash the clothes a couple of times before using them.

Leather jacket will definitely not work in Canada. It's getting colder here and snowing by the minute.

I don't quite get what you mean by second hand stores? Stores where you can get knockoff products? Yes there are many here in Canada as I would assume around the world as well. Obviously you would have to go to right places and that depends on where you plan on staying.

The prices of snow shoes and jackets here vary quite a bit. Obviously the branded ones cost a lot more, but you can get a decent pair of boots and a coat for say hmm, 60-100$ a piece.

You can however, wear a jacket over your leather coat for extra protection from the cold.

Leather gloves (or warm gloves) are a must, as is a nice warm knitted cap (called a tuque) and a scarf (optional).

I'm not sure where you plan on staying in Canada, else I could give you more info.

Okay .

But one jacket I would be carrying because I would be wearing that in journey.

If I get those a little cheaper , it will be good. :)

I live in UK mate

Justcrazy you are lucky this winter has been pretty warm lol. But don't be fooled, we just had our first snow storm. UK has panzy weather, here the temperature will go down -15 to -20. Which is 15-20 degrees colder than in UK. Walmart generally has a budget suitable winter clothing. So you are better of there, don't need to spend $150 winter jacket. You can get a decent one for like $40 at walmart.

Things that are a must
1. Winter jacket
2. Toque/Winter had that covers your head and ears
3. Winter scarf
4. Sweater to be worn inside your jacket.
5. Gloves(No cotton gloves), ask for a proper winter gloves.
6. Long Johns to be worn inside your pants because your jeans won't handle the cold
7. Winter boots

Ideally you want to look like this guy(behind the girl)

Will I get all these in Wal Mart .

I will be moving to Canada , not from Uk but from Australia . I cannot be carrying so much luggage right now.

What you need for really cold weather is a goose down parka. It is a Godsend when the windchill is -20F. Synthetic doesn't work as well, and eiderdown is too expensive. Goose down works well, and while a good parka stuffed with it will cost in the region of $150, it is worth it, because it will last years. Usually the vendor will specify the thermal rating, with "Warmest" being able to withstand -40F (which, incidentally, is also -40C).

Boots and gloves also come with thermal ratings, and the ones lined with a synthetic material called Thinsulate will do the job well.

While the Thinsulate gloves and boots should be available at the big box stores, for the goose down parka you can look at stores such as Lands End, LL Bean, REI etc. The prices go down a lot in the summers though, so this may not be the best time of year to buy them.

It sounds expensive , but I think its really good.

Would try and buy that one then.

What you suggest for toronto for moderate budget ?

I'm not sure about Toronto since I've never lived there, but you may want to look online at the stores I mentioned, and see what deals they have. Sometimes "old new" stock, i.e. last year's designs which they still have in stock, will go for far cheaper than the newer designs, and the differences are only cosmetic.

Also try eBay, if you don't mind used. I've sold down parkas that my kids grew out of, for far cheaper than what I paid for them new.

The land of immigrants scamming and immigrants underemployment. Beautiful country though.

Someone suggested me thrift stores ,

Those too, but I'm not sure if they'll have premium items like down parkas, because people aren't likely to just donate them, or even sell them at the prices thrift stores will buy at. But they're worth a look I guess. They may have wool or wool blend coats, which can work too, provided you dress in layers.

Depends from person to person but I've never really felt cold on my legs hence never needed long johns, but often need to wear two pairs of wool socks to keep them toes from falling off.

The first three things you absolutely need to invest in are winter jacket, winter gloves and boots anything else is additional/optional.

Coming from a warm country like Australia you might feel extra cold even on a "warm" winter day, it'll take your body around a month to completely climatize to the weather

For second hand store try "Value Village".

Snow shoes can vary from 50$ to 200$. Buy one which support at least -30C. The last snow shoes I bought from Costco.

Dont think you need overcoat in winter. You need winter jacket. Buy one with down and waterproof. Would cost you from 100$ to 800$. The last one I bought from Mark's Work warehouse.

How do you define foreigner's? What if that so called foreigner was a naturalized citizen who looked different? Or i guess you mean native Canadians whennyou said locals, since to them every European looking dude is foreign

From my personal experience, I can say that you're wrong. Canada isn't perfect but I can't imagine that many other countries out there are better for immigrants.

Most of these "scams" and "immigrant bashing" is created by immigrants themselves. I personally know family friends who lied about their marriages and are in trouble because of it.

USA is much better for immigrants when it comes to jobs. Just because a few immigrants lie does not mean all immigrants deserves underemployment

USA is also much better for immigrants in terms of getting shot in the face, stabbed, being called "rapists" and potentially, having to carry around ID cards after a period where a specific group is barred entry all-together.

Don't make me laugh. The US has a bigger economy so it doesn't take a genius to know that there are more job openings there. Money isn't everything though.

Bottomline is the US economy is much better in terms of economically integrating immigrants compared to the country of Canada. Case closed

For everyone new to Canada I suggest you do splurge and get descent winter gear. Something like a Canada Goose Parka will last a good 5-10 years. Also should look at a descent pair of gloves and a scarf.

This thread is about why Canada is one of the best places to live in. Economy is only one factor in this and not the most important. Understand?

Yes , economy is one of the factors , there are other factors as well.

I think some posters are on extreme here , what I wanted is balanced views.

He wants a jacket under budget since he is just starting his life out. $800 jacket might be too much at this point.

But I already have leather jackets , what should I do ? I plan to wear that while travelling , and maybe use in summer.

Please get good pair gloves and scarf as well. It is really cold now and will get really cold on some days.

March .

Probably 10 months . If I get extension , it may be more.

Yeah if you're coming in March, you'd want a warm winter jacket straight away, conisdering winter this year has started late and it will probably be severe until late March or maybe even a bit of April. Plus you'll be staying 10 months which includes another winter. Get gloves, a jacket, a hat, a scarf, etc. as you'll badly need it.

You can wear your leather equipment in the fall/spring season (April, May, September, October). In the summer, you'll be good with short sleeves.

Word of advice; Wear two pair of socks, one over the other when you're here. Else you'll probably get swollen feet due to the cold.

Don't worry about warm winter clothes if you are coming in March. A normal winter jacket/winter clothes will be good enough in March.

Real GTA winter lasts from December-February.

Thanks , I wil get from walmart then.
You won't find much winter stuff at Walmart in March. Only spring/summer items. You could try a store like Winners, but winter will have well subsided by then anyways.

I try to avoid professors with desi names when choosing classes. That's my rule of thumb. Search up their name at ratemyprofessor.com before selecting the class, and if they have less than a B don't take their class.

And yeah was wondering that too. My physics teacher last semester was a civil engineer. But engineers over here are getting laid off left, right and center so I guess not so surprising, that they're turning towards teaching. The guy would always write too fast, but had a big heart :afridi in that he gave you 100% for labs and homework and exams were only 40% of the grade.

You won't find much winter stuff at Walmart in March. Only spring/summer items. You could try a store like Winners, but winter will have well subsided by then anyways.

Okay , if that is the case , I may not need much winter stuff .
