What's new

Why is Canada among the top liveable countries?

2nd day of Uni and so far, 3 out of 3 professors are immigrants who can't teach to save their life... Also, I don't understand why it's necessary to have professors that are engineers. What's the point if they have all the knowledge but can't convey it? sigh...gonna be a long, long semester, methinks. :afaq

I have same problems with economics professor, here in Atlantic province, they are terriible terrible, specially from india, pakistan and sri lanka, they can't teach. literally its waste of money,,, and literally you can cheat on in that courses..prof can't do much

Speaking of Canadian winter clothing, isn't it obligatory to don a toque? I hear they hand one out at naturalization ceremonies.

Canadian people , specially Logical Syed1 Belawal2014 Thivagar Bullet Drive srh

My Manager told me I have to go and live in Yukon Province for three months . But not now , after staying in Toronto for initial two months.

I have seen on Internet , its population is very less , how will i survive ?

Yukon ? Thats strange. Well luckily for you Canada seems to be getting warmer and warmer and this is one of the mildest winters i have ever witnessed in this country. Dress warm though it would still be really cold for you.

And oh boy life is probably very different up north, i doubt anyone of us can give you any helpful tips since most are from the southern coast.

Okay , thank you .

The Yukon will be a once in a lifetime experience. There are probably less people in that big province than there are in a Toronto neighborhood.

Besides, you can pan for gold on the weekends.

I went from 3 years of living in Toronto to living 10 months in Calgary, it was significantly cooler than anything i experienced in Toronto. Yukon will be tough but for 3 months its not bad. Time will fly before you know it.

When are you coming to Toronto ?

The distance from Toronto to Yukon(Whitehorse) is bigger than crossing the Atlantic ocean. There is no road there, you'd have to take the plane, because of the location, everything is crazy expensive there and limited. It is way more cold as well. Even it is too cold for normal Canadians lol. Tell your manager to screw himself and claim refugee or something brother lol.

Best Profs social science profs, because they teach that with pure passion.

damn. you need to spend some good money now; no more cheap stuff. buy seriously good winter stuff which will be expensive but will let you survive there.

Hello Friends ,

I was going through a list of Top 10 countries to live in. I found that Canada was in all list in top five.

I do not understand why it is so ? The weather is very cold. Taxes are high .

I also heard from some immigrants that they do not recognize degrees or experience outside Canada.

Its tough to get a decent job .

Despite all this , why Canada is preferred immigration destination as well ranks high among top liveable countries?

Thoughts please . :)

Lol come to Saskatchewan , too many incompetent immigrant doctors here

Even i was surprised to see Canada TBH . Ever since I moved to the Sask province , I got to explore a completely different Canada .

Pros : job opportunities , quicker growth , smaller city , less traffic . Yes , SK has suffered due to the oil industry collapse but the opportunities are still better than toronto .

Cons : healthcare is a joke . Underdeveloped infrastructure and the further you move out from the 2 big cities , the worse it gets . Crime rate is high . You cant live with natives , better to avoid them and their areas at night . Racism .

I dont know what the government does with the money here , they literally have these signs up along the highways proudly claiming how much they spent to build the road . It comes down to hundreds of millions dollars per km . For that money , we can build roads made of pure gold in pakistan lol

The natives live in a really bad condition . Sometimes I don't even know whether to feel sorry for them or not .

And I forgot to mention the real estate lol another joke .

Lots of people moved in here for the SINP program . They figured that their cities are growing so they build quite a few new neighbourhoods with expensive houses and condos . The program closed and people started leaving . They are now left with nearly empty neighborhoods .

Still , the houses are overpriced . For an average newly built detached house , be ready to spend over 500000 .

The companies are making the government offer grants for homebuyers because they wont lower the prices .

TBF Sask is arguably the worst province to live in, in Canada.

Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax are all awesome places to live in

If you are headed to Yukon for three months, it must be for an annual service performed during the summer times. Lots of accounting, finance, and professional services staff head up north from May/June through August - and a lot of local companies have year ends to coincide with this season.

Summers are amazing. Winters brutal.

If you have any adventure travel bug, Yukon is probably the best place to spend your three summer months. Whitehorse itself is pretty drab, but on my one and only tour to the province, I enjoyed some of my best travel experiences. I drove to the 'top of the world' on the Dempster Highway, hiked up to the Nahanni falls, and had my most memorable rafting trip (on the Alsek). None of that stuff comes cheap, but has to be done once in your life.

Although everyone is friendly, people are mostly first nations - living a culture almost in an antonym to what you'll come across amongst the immigrants in Toronto. Expect to find a whole lot more time for PP once there!

Yes , he told me its cold.

Claim refugee means ? You mean asylum ?

I will stay three months in Yukon and one month in some place called Nuna wut . That is what I was informed. I cannot avoid it , they said I will be paid for extra expenditure on food.

Yukon/Nunavut are in the middle of nowhere.. I hope you are an outdoorsy person because there will be nothing else to do out there. Also wildlife like bears and moose are fairly common in those areas so you have to be extra careful when you go out.

I was in Fort McMurray for one year on an internship and although it is fairly north, it is no where as north as Yukon. Fort McMurray winters were absolutely unbearable, -45C was common throughout the winter months. Good thing you are going in the summer.

I saw on you tube that they made a Mosque in Yukon recently .

Yaa, be like the "paindus are attacking me". Yukon isn't suitable place, you can't survive unless you are being paid $3500+. There will be no brown food. No road leads to that place, you gotta fly in and out of that region, so the food costs tremendous. Get to Canada and flip your boss off.

Their summer is like the winter in Pakistan. Still bring Sweaters, jacket and etc.

Okay.

Back to the original question why Canada is among top liveable countries name me any other "liveable" country that is as tolerant and provides such opportunities to south asian minorities.

Canada has:
Muslim Mayor of its top Economic City Calgary - Naheed Nenshi
Sikh Defense Minister - Harjit Sajjan
Hindu head of top bank in Canada - Bharat Masrani
Female Afghan Minister of Democratic Institutions - Maryam Monsef
Equal gender parity for cabinet

Is America, England or Australia progressive enough to have these people in such roles?

These are just symbolic gestures at best to pepper over the cracks in the system for promoting under employment among foreign educated immigrants and scamming them. Even India has diversity of diversity in its political systems and economic system, doesn't make it a land of the pure.

So Nenshi is a symbolic gesture? Mayors are not appointed, they're elected.

It's laughable to suggest the Canadian government appointed a Sikh defence minister as a symbolic gesture, one of the most important cabinet positions in government.

The guy who has nothing but bad things to say about Canada has become a Canadian citizen. The irony is quite unbelievable. Congrats, looks like they scammed you into staying.
The truth must not told about the immigrant scaming, under employment promoting country of Canada.

Canadian Citizen today

Congratulations.

I find it funny watching the US electioneering, and their self-delusions about American exceptionalism.

The bottom line is that Canada, Australia and New Zealand offer the best quality of life for legal immigrants who are English speakers. There is a safety net in terms of quality free healthcare and education that the British, Americans and Irish don't enjoy (any more in the case of the British and Irish).

That safety net is because we enjoy - yes, enjoy - higher taxes.

I love Americans, but in general they accept the premise of being a richer version of India - an every man for himself society.

But those of us in Australia, Canada and New Zealand are more like the Northern Europeans, trading off great personal wealth for greater security in our lives bought by fairer, higher taxes.

Congratulations. Canada is a wonderful society.

That safety net is because we enjoy - yes, enjoy - higher taxes.

I don't think the Yanks pay higher taxes than the Britons,. But they spend a lot of it on the military, and keep borrowing and borrowing.

They have tax-and-spend Democrats, but don't-tax-and-spend-anyway Republicans.

They could get away with their expenditure in the USA if they raised enough tax.

But even though I am a centrist by British and Aussie standards, I freely accept that Bernie Sanders is actually the only economically sound Presidential candidate. He is the only one who acknowledges that:

1. Americans fritter away trillions on inefficient private healthcare - for inferior care and outcomes to what we get from "socialised" medical care in every other western country.

2. Americans earning over $35,000 per year pay far too little tax. They don't raise enough revenue to have a military at all!

Than Yanks and Canadians pay high tax anything. If you are earning 300K, your paying nearly 50% in tax. The rick Yanks used to pay 90% in tax lol. Google it.

American average income is boosted because of the number of their million and billionaires. America is a much more poorer nation on average than Canada. Prof posted the average income for people earning below 100K and US's average was $17,500ish.

Not sure how you got to that conclusion . For me Toronto is the worst and from what I have heard of Vancouver , it is about as bad as Toronto . Traffic , living expenses, job market , purchasing power is getting worse .

Easier to establish yourself here given the job security , growth opportunities , etc .

Hi all,

I arrived in Canada only 3 months ago. I got my first job in Canada as a retail manager. I got my work permit 2 weeks ago and got job fortunately. I have past experience of supervisor in UK and then as a store manager in India. Pay is not that high, I will be getting around 50k. But I really do not mind as I have got the break. I was interviewed by all white people and they all were very friendly.

Also, my wife got a job as an QA analyst 6 months ago. Even her pay is not on higher side. But she got the start in Canada.

So, I have better experience than Alphafighter so far. I am enjoying in Vancouver. People are nice and friendly. Only problem is buying a house which is out of reach and costs around $1 million for independent house. Cheers

Be careful, you might be getting scammed by the government! You may be working in a fake job setup by the Canadian government to force you to pay taxes. It's all part of a scam, call Alphafighter right away.

One success story does not compensate for the other 20,000 people who have scammed and humiliatingly been made underemployed due to a racist economic system.

Alpha bhai...I do agree with you slightly. It is not easy to get first Job in Canada, but I think its not easy to get first job in any of developed countries as an immigrant.

Immigrants do struggle to get a first break. In my opinion luck plays a big role to get your first job. I think there are loads of people in Canada better than me in retail, but being on right place at right time is important as far as first job is concerned. Once you have the local work experience then no stopping you.

Honestly speaking, when I started job search I was very much aware of hurdles in getting my first job in Canada. So, I decided to be flexible and applying for minimum wage jobs. But I never complained as I know my life and my son's future is much better in Canada as compare to India. Sometimes you need to sacrifice your aspirations for betterment of your family. It is not like that I belong to a poor family in India. I am from Haryana and I belong to middle class family. But still I believe Canada is nice place to live. I lived in Uk and really enjoyed there as well.
Regards

My gripe and frustration with the whole thing is the fact that people don't focus on those who have just not made it at all in this country and have actually lost everything and it infuriates me when the halves condescendingly just blame these people for their own failures under the pretext off "The system is fair, just you guys were just not good enough" which is not correct. For every one success story there are like 100 failures but all the attention and credit goes to the success stories but no one bothers to give any sympathy, help, exposure to the unfortunate, unsuccessful immigrants.

Problem is not the system but our mindsets . I know because where I am living right now , most people are recently arrived . Indians and Philippinians are doing better than the Pakistani community . Why ? Both husband and wife work and they are willing to do every job , as long as they are earning they don`t care . Indian government is supportive as well AFAIK , providing student loans they have to pay off .

Pakistanis on the other hand , want either cash jobs ie drive taxis . Not as many women working . New arrivals want sethon wali job right away .

I met this Pakistani uncle at someone`s house . He wanted to know how he can invest his earnings . So my friend asked , how much you want to invest ? He said , I make around $9000 per month , after tax . Then he explained , he is interested in getting a mortgage , the 9000 he gets from government benefits . Apparently , he has a lot of kids , both parents don`t work so low income benefits .

And he did not look like he was joking .

You expect people like that to make something of themselves ? Stop the child benefits and see how many Muslims still go about preaching every kid brings their own rizq and it is a blessing . :yk

Combination of American and British qualities:

- can-do spirit
- lots of space
- friendliness
- liberal tolerance
- national health service

Plus good schools, long life expectancy, low inequality, low crime rate.

Canada is its own country; not a combination of two other countries. Please take note of that.

Smaller city , job security , tons of places to visit especially during the summers , better purchasing power , less living expenses .

Go to Superstore during the weekend after 12 , the sale stuff and the produce is gone . So , opportunities to open up a grocery store is there as well . :yk

That is a valid point you made. One pakistani man told me same thing.

I think it's because everyone understands that we are all migrants here and the country needs all of us. Canada has also inherited the best qualities of Britain and America and left out the worst, which makes for a great combo.

Don't get me wrong, we're not perfect and we still have to sort out our economy but there are very few places I would rather be.

How much could you rent a nice, two bedroom condo for? I've also been asking my friends and family to consider leaving the bubble of the GTA but no one wants to, sadly.

It's not all about the money, I hope you understand. I know a couple who spend days on end driving a truck together and their huge house remains empty most of the time. That is not a life that many Pakistanis and Muslims, in general want.

Besides, if you can get a good education (which is truly a blessing that everyone can avail of in our country), your wife does not have to work.
