Why is Junaid Khan considered a trundler when he bowls the same pace as Josh Hazlewood?

Junaid Khan has bowled low to mid 130s kph on his comeback yet people are criticizing him for his speed saying that he's too slow for international cricket. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood is arguably Australia's best bowler and he bowls at the same pace. Why the excessive criticism of Junaid?

In his first comeback (post knee injury), he was hitting 128 KPH.

Junaid has come back faster this time around.

Plus, it's what you do with the ball in hand. Mohammad Asif was a "trundler" but no one would criticize him for it due to how accurate he was (like Hazlewood).

Because Hazlewood operates at 135kph and his bouncer can go up to 142kph. Infact im Test matches Hazlewood was constantly bowling at 138kph. That was his average. Junaid was only operating at around 131-132.

I completely understand that but by the same token he was bowling in the 140s 2-3 years back. I just have issue with people saying Junaid doesn't deserve a recall because of being too slow. Like you said getting recalled should be dependent upon what you can do with the ball, not whether you're 5 km faster or slower than the next bowler.

Josh can bowl fast, and he does. He regularly can bowl above 134-135kph.

Junaid in his previous come back was bowling 120s., early 130s. Today, I saw some of his balls at 135kph, so that's a good sign.

Besides, quality of both is different. Josh is truly skilled! (though trundling only refers to slow pace).

Being slow is not the only reason. Not a major reason for me and for most.

He lacks skill with the ball. He can't swing it, extremely poor with the new ball, relies too much on old ball roughing up and then seaming/reversing.

That art, old ball reverse swing is reliant on good pace.

Suppose Pakistan find a really good fast bowler to pair up with Amir, do you think Junaid is worth having on the team as a first-change bowler and a death over specialist? From what I remember, Junaid has been exceptional throughout his career bowling at death.

If he can replicate his peak death over/old ball skills and at good pace, definitely a good first-change bowler when you have an excellent new ball pair already.

Josh is a trundler too.

There you go. Everything settled.

On a serious note junaid needs more match practice to get back into 140s.

Junaid Khan doesn't need to get faster.

But he will remain a waste of a bowling position until or unless he grows at least 5 inches taller.

You're kidding right? What a time to less us in your insight

I really question the intelligence of people who make comments like this. He was slower than he was before his injury but he's still the same quality bowler and was once again, swinging and moving the new ball around. His partnership with Amir should be set until the 2019 WC.

Now all we need is to find a first change pacer that will keep up the pressure. Hassan is decent but needs to prove himself more. For the CT, I'd pick Irfan over him.

Their is nothing wrong with trundling if you have versatility, variety and consistency

Or in other way mcgra, pollock were simply trudlers

He was the cricket version of Abou Diaby but now he's realised that he needs to avoid getting injured all the time. He's a quality bowler who I've always backed and never criticised, should be a main bowler from now one, I remember him being benched too many times.

I don't know how many times this point has to be made, but if speed was everything then Glen McGrath wouldn't have been an ATG.

Hazelwood is consistently producing quality, Junaid has had one good game after years of doing nothing.

Hazlewood is taller , thus can afford to bowl in mid 130s because of the bounce he gets. Junaid on the other hand isn't tall enough , a good bowler though but with the height and pace combo makes him a trundler.

BTW junaid khan is a better ODI bowler than wahab , no doubt in that. Had two bad years in 2014 and 2015 where he managed to play only 10 odis. I am not his fan but he definitely is better than wahab who averages 32 in ODI cricket.

If we look at pakistans current fast bowler records who have played 20 or more games Junaid has the best average and most number of 5fers. He is not the same bowler he was once but post spot fixing era he was our most successful test and ODI fast bowler.

Baseless argument. Many international pacers have done pretty well despite being shorter than 6'0. Yeah, don't be as short as Sachin Tendulkar like Bilawal Bhatti but 5'10+ is just fine.

Raahat ali is also a very good first change bowler... remember his wickets in CWC'15 he took crucial wickets in 15-25 overs mark i reckon...

because his action and also because he is not as tall as Hazlewood.

Hazlewood is 1.96cm tall. Junaid is not./
end thread.
