Why is modern Punjabi music so lewd?

In the 80s it had a deeper meaning, more of the internal zeitgeist but now promotes amorality as a standard.

Is it a cultural thing ?. Often Indian and Pakistani vocalists would duet and they'd intersperse the dialects. Now the modern exponents use a very rich accent and yet the words are devoid of meaning ?.

Just an enquiry as though I understand the languages of the Dash - moreso Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi as the more common ones.

I've recently been watching Desi Beat on Colour - Raj Thai is awesome and a great exponent of 'Hinglish' but within the popular Punjabi / 'bhangra' - there's an element of cultural ownership within that genre, as Punjabi is a vast scape.

Sorry for the rambling, more an open question.

Hip hop/drug culture in Punjab

All of these influences are resulting in lewd music scene

I don't mind tbh that's the culture/things young people grew up with and that's what they want to listen to
Times are changing good or bad depends on your perception

But after Bohemia (only lyrical mainstream artist of.punjabi music) lyrical punjabi music scene just died and I am like a nas.fan so lyrics is key for every.good song for me and punjabi music is not giving.me.that fix

There's Mumbai rap scene for somewhat family friendly music people can listen to that and they are also lyrical

Punjabi is the only south asian language with street cred. Punjabi are the gangsters of south asia.

Punjabi popular music I hear and see is about some random sardarji who thinks he is black. Throwing gang signs, singing about partying till 6am, women who randomly appear ala western hip hop videos is all that I see.

Modern Punjabi and Bollywood music is honestly embarrassingly awful

:))

There seems to be some truth in that. Some of my Punjabi friends have told me the same thing.

For example, the process of dehusking paddy to produce rice is referred to as 'Chawal nangi karna' by Punjabi farmers in India- literally 'strip the rice naked'.

A lot of commonly used Punjabi words and phrases seem to have a suggestive twist to them.

Well the likes of Alaap, Gurdaas Maan, Hans Raj Hans and Malkit Singh took Punjabi music to new heights.

These days most of the Punjabi singers are terrible vocalists.

There is one guy who I think is a good dinger though - Jazz Dhami.

Jasmin Sandlas is amazing but her videos might be seen a lewd some.

People can still listen to the songs even without watching the videos.

Don't have an ear for punjabi songs, where the male singer has a typically faux feminine nasal voice and female singer have baritone. But each to their own.

Punjabi music has always had lewd side. Check out the older Pakistani Punjabi films with the likes of Anjuman flinging herself around with hips the size of a bus. Can't stand it personally but in the pinds it would have them jumping.

Anyone remember Chamkeela. He was the first bad boy of lewd music.
It has become mainstream now because of western influence of rap. 1980s was the best era it went downhill after that. There are a few singers now who are good and don’t sing trash, but very less.
I blame the UK punjabi singers like Sukshinder shinda in bringing this trend in the 90s

I was a big fan of Gurdas Maan while growing up , and it’s true there is quite a bit of lewd and uncultured Punjabi in modern day songs - but Gurdas Maan was unique in that his singing was not only superb but the Punjabi lyrics of his songs were beautiful.

A recent song not that old but worth listening to just for the lyrics and message is Roti by Gurdas Maan... beautiful
