Why is MS Dhoni still playing professional cricket?

20 off 9 - if he can keep on doing this then he may be playing for a very long time!

Against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, he’d come in to bat in the 17th over, Dhoni would score a nine-ball-20. “This is what my job is, I have told them this is what I am supposed to do, don’t make me run a lot and it has been working. This is what I need to do, happy to contribute,” he’d tell in the post-match conference.

Thank god for Indian bowlers

If Imran gets barred from politics, I'm sure he could make a living hitting a few cameos in pyjama leagues like this guy.

MS Dhoni has finally answered all speculations on whether IPL 2023 will be the ned of his playing career. After guiding his beloved Chennai Super Kings to a record 10th IPL final with a win over defending champions Gujarat Titans in Chennai on Tursday, Dhoni was asked a clear-cut question by renowned commenetator Harsha Bhogle. "Will you come and play here in Chepauk again?" Dhoni was asked. To which, Dhoni did not give a straight reaply but made it absolutely clear that he won't decide on his career right after the IPL ends.

"I don't know. I have eight or nine months to decide. The small auction will be around December so why to take that headche right now. I have ample time to decide. I will always be there for CSK, whether it is in the playing form or sitting somewhere outiside," MS Dhoni said in the post match-presentation ceremony.

"Frankly it takes a heavy toll. I have been out of form for literally four months now. Jan 31st was the time when I finished my work and started practising from 2nd-3rd of March. It takes a lot but I have ample time to decide."

Chennai Super Kings tamed a tenacious Gujarat Giants by 15 runs on a sticky surface to enter their 10th IPL final on Tuesday and extend their remarkable consistency in the tournament. CSK did well to reach 172 for 7 on a slow pitch in Qualifier 1 after Hardik Pandya opted to bowl. Considering the conditions, it turned out to be much more than a competitive total as Gujarat Titans had a rare off day to end with 157 all out in 20 overs. Rashid Khan made the CSK fans nervous with a 16-ball 30 towards the end but it was not enough for the Titans.

However, the defending champions will got another shot to make a second successive final in Qualifier 2 on Friday.

CSK's master tactician M S Dhoni made the best use of home advantage to take the four time champions to a 10th final in 14 editions. CSK did not take part in 2016 and 2017 editions.

Unbelievable captaincy today. He still got it. Those field placings were 100% spot on. Fielder didn't even have to move

this guy is a genius when it comes to captaincy. Even if he doesn't contribute much with the bat, his captaincy alone is on another level

Legitimate question - why is Dhoni still playing? Cant be money so guess it's vanity but he is holding back other talented players in his IPL team as well?

Guess same question for Afridi in PSL also.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has questioned the batting position of Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who hasn’t played any professional cricket since the completion of the last IPL, batted at number seven in CSK’s opening game against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium.

Dhoni, who is known as the best finisher of the game, was dismissed for a blob when he chopped the ball back on to his stumps against Avesh Khan. Gambhir believes a captain has to lead from the front and Dhoni is not doing that if he is batting down the order at number seven. The former KKR captain feels it will make sense for CSK if Dhoni bats in the middle order and takes the onus on his shoulders.

Gautam Gambhir said while talking to Star Sports show Cricket Live, “MS Dhoni should be batting higher, that’s what matters because ultimately people should start leading from the front. We keep mentioning this thing that a leader needs to lead from the front. You can’t be leading, when you’re batting at No.7. Yes, there are issues in their bowling line up. Plus, he is not the MS Dhoni, which he used to be probably four or five years back, where he could just come in and start taking on the bowlers from the word go. For me, I think he needs to bat at number four/ five. Nothing below that.”

In fact, Dhoni had pushed himself down in the order in the early stages of the previous season of the IPL. When the veteran wicket-keeper batsman was asked about his position in the batting order, he had revealed that he took the decision due to lack of game time as he was playing for the first time since the 2019 World Cup.

As MS Dhoni has called it a day from his International cricket and also doesn’t play in the domestic circuit, thus it is not easy for him to hit the ground running when he is playing in the IPL. It is well said that the best practice is out there in the middle but Dhoni has lacked that in the last two years. However, the CSK captain has all the experience under his belt and he should come good in the coming matches.

CSK will play their second game against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai today.

Money (as it is never enough) & he probably is not so passionate about a second career or a retirement.

Cry baby Gambhir questioning MSD.. Lol

Former umpire Daryl Harper on Dhoni apparent time-wasting to run the clock down before Matheesha Pathirana was allowed to bowl:

“Dhoni wasted time to allow his preferred bowling option to deliver the vital 16th over,” said Harper. “That’s the only conclusion that I can draw from that disappointing spectacle. The issue for me is the lack of respect shown for the spirit of cricket and for the directions of the umpires. There were other options for the captain, but they were ignored.

“Maybe, some people are bigger than the law or in this case, the spirit of cricket. It’s always disappointing to see the lengths that some people will go to in order to win.”

Harper also recalled an incident during his own career when he was officiating an India Test match in 2007. Rahul Dravid was captaining India when Sachin Tendulkar was unable to come in at No.4 because he still had six minutes to wait after leaving the field. Of that incident, Harper said: “Stalling for time was not an option for Dravid. However, I don’t believe it was a tactic he would have ever considered. It just wasn’t cricket [that mattered] and there were standards in that era.”

Virender Sehwag on MSD:

"It's not difficult (to play cricket in 40s), if you're fit. MS Dhoni hasn't batted too much this year. He's not aggravating his knee injury. Often, he would come in the last two overs. If I count the total balls he faced, I think he would've faced 40-50 deliveries this season"

"Impact Player rule doesn't apply on MS Dhoni. Because he's playing only for captaincy. He has to stay in the ground for captaincy. Impact Player rule is for someone who doesn't field but bats, or a bowler who doesn't need to bat. Dhoni has to field 20 overs; if he's not the captain, he won't even play as Impact Player. Then, you will see him as mentor or coach or Director of Cricket," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

SRT and professional cricket in his time was still somewhat of a urban sport in India.

I meet Dhoni fans in remotest of places in Maharashtra. Cricket has saturated to the margins now.

In India and even Pakistan, you won't get as much love and fame if you are not a great LOI player or atleast it won't be saturated as much to the remotest of places if you were a great test player only.

True. Test are almost invisible for majority. They will struggle to remember who ChePu is.

Today's match once again proved that MSD is blessed to be one of the most luckiest cricketers in the game. You don't expect guys like Rahane playing a memorable cameo and winning the World title for you in this format but it just happened.

He must have the record for most games played as a specialist captain.

Part of the reason CSK management assigns roles and expects players to do just the role irrespective of the outcome. Everyone played exactly the same style right through. Conway (anchor cum accelerator), Gaikwad power play user, Dube middle order enforcer. So is Rahane. They don't mind failures as long as they play that role or attempt to play that role. Same was said by Shane watson, Moeen Ali.

Those who says MSD wins games because of his luck, they really don't know cricket... they must have played book cricket lol...
Even at 60 yr old if I want to have a guy in my team that would be MSD PERIOD. Brilliant player/captain to played the game ...:msd

How so? He has players playing above their level time and again to deliver him trophies.

You could say he was lucky if it was once. For this many tournament wins, surely the captain must have something to do with it?

I doubt it. In yester years Sunil Gavaskar was very famous.
Recently Rahul Dravid was very famous as well, even though he scored 10,000+ runs in LOI, he is known as WALL and famous for it.

India was not good in LOI, after the arrival of Dhoni they were consistent and good. You did not have many LOI greats till then.

Because thousands of people still fill up the stadiums to watch him. And millions tune in to their tellies and mobiles to see him bat even when they know that he's going to play a sucker of a knock.

Tbh this whole Dhoni mania is very difficult to explain to an outsider. You need to be an Indian or lived in India for a considerable amount of time to truly get it.

Its my lived experience. Internet forums and urban cricket club members have different outlook on cricket from rural cricket fans.

And India had many LOI greats before MSD.

Cricketer MS Dhoni has announced that he will not retire after winning a record fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title.

The former India captain, 41, was expected to retire from all forms of cricket but said that love from his fans has made him give it another try.

Led by Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings beat the Gujarat Titans on Monday night to win the trophy.

The "double good news" sparked massive celebration by fans on social media.

One Chennai Super Kings supporter called Dhoni's decision not to retire "a great gift" for fans of the team.

"Allowing CSK and the fans to savour the moment by not announcing his retirement is classic Dhoni!" another fan said.

Dhoni's CSK won the match by five wickets after Ravindra Jadeja hit a last-ball four to successfully chase down the revised target of 171 in a rain affected match.

The team's win was celebrated not just by its supporters but also by members of the opposing team.

Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya called Dhoni a "mentor" and said, "If I had to lose, I don't mind losing to him."

In Kolkata, as CSK played against the home team, many stands looked yellow - the Chennai team's colour - as fans wore Dhoni's shirt and not the purple kit of the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Fans had expected Dhoni to retire, especially if CSK took home the trophy this year.

There is very little left for the cricketer to achieve in the sport - Dhoni won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and led the India team to one-day world glory in 2011.

He has mentored dozens of talents, many of whom are the mainstay of the current Indian team.

He is also known as one of the best cricket captains and a brilliant strategist and reader of the game.

But Dhoni is not known to follow conventions. His career had been built on unusual choices and surprises.

In the IPL, he's been "developing the young, and reinventing the old" to make CSK serial champions, commentator and former Australian cricketer Tom Moody said.

On Monday, Dhoni seemed to believe he had one more season of triumph left for his fans.

"This is the best time to announce my retirement," he said. He, however, said he'd give it a few more months because of "the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year."

Dhoni said he'd likely come back and play at least one more season of the IPL as "a gift" from his side to the fans.

"The way they've shown their love and affection, I think that's something I need to do for them," he said.

Amazing fan following he (Dhoni) has. Biggest cricket player last 20 years or so. The noise they make just when he talks is crazy.

Of course he should lead CSK next year. 5 times champion. He deserves it!

Take a bow Mahi !!!

Handsdown he is one of the biggest. Just think about it Match is happening in Gujarat home ground of Gujarat Titans. 80% of the crowd was in yellow !!

Does he play much more cricket other than the IPL?

No one knows how to win trophies like he does. He hasn’t lost his magic touch even at this stage of his career.

There is no way CSK would have won it this year without his leadership.

The GOAT white ball captain, no one comes close.

Definitely. This was such a rookie side. Pathirana not even backed by srilankan team. Theekshana is too raw. Tushar Deshpande is originally back up of a rookie. So was Akash singh under-19 player. Jaddu is the only world class. Chahar was injured mostly. Remaining guys are either already retired partially or close to retirement. No captain could have pulled this off with this unit.

I don't know if it's luck or is it some kind of gift from the gods, he has this amazing habit of picking just the right player at the right time.

Devon Conway cost 10mn inr

Pathirana 2mn inr

Picked up at their base prices.

So u want to say batters laid eggs while Dhoni again won it like in 2011 when others did hardwork ??

Gaekwd sizzled this seasom Conway is a leading batter , shivam dube an almost yuvi like replacement , rayudu too is a great bat , and did rahane rediscover himself ? These were 80 pc run contributors paart from Jaddu and moeen. Bowlers evwhere got stick .,

lol at Jadeja, soft!

However, a good decision from him. Captaincy isn't his cup of tea.

He should leave playing T20 cricket too. That isn't his cup of tea either.

This one clearly didnt age well , haan after the Ipl final ? Or wasnt worth typing any time before too

The reason CSK win is because all their players really want to play and win for the franchise. It might be because of the coaching team or Dhoni himself. Rahane said in his post match interview that Dhoni told him that if he receives an opportunity he will get a long rope and will not be dropped for couple of failures. Also he was given a clear role at the top to attack the pace bowlers.

Same with Shivam Dube who was given a clear role of going after the spinners in the middle overs. The CSK players also know that if they fail in the task given by the management, they will not be dropped from the next game. This is what RCB and other franchises do through the season. GT is same as CSK and don't change their team too much.

One of the cricbuzz analysts said that you know what you are going to get with CSK but they will still beat you. That has been the case over the last 16 years of IPL. CSK do not like to keep changing the team for the sake of it and give confidence to the batters & bowlers which allows them to play without fear. Rahane knows that he has been given a role of attack and even if he fails, he will not be discarded. Allows him to follow the plan without the fear of getting dropped. Result? Average of 32 at a SR of 172 in a season. Rahane has never struck so high in the 15 previous seasons. You can deny all you want but there is a method to CSK's success which includes unbelievable leadership from Dhoni & Fleming.

Ruturaj failed whole season. CSK cotinually backed him. Shivam dube first 2 matches clueless. They kept backing him. Before the season he clearly tells people "You are playing all 14 matches". When Fleming was not in favor Deepak Chahar (first ever time) Dhoni told "He is playing all 14 matches". That clear thought process of team selection, role assignment, bowling strategies for each player like he stationed a short square leg behind the wicket for Gill. No team has done that entire season. Catch went exactly there. Chahal dropped. RCB has betteer inform players. Why didn't they win? Rahane played for 15 seasons for different franchises. His strike rate was never above 135. This year 172. Check interview of Stephen Fleming. It is at tightly nit set up. Without MSD CSK would have won several wooden spoons.

Jadeja has done nothing in IT20 cricket to warrant any love for him or else we'd have won at least a WT20 with him in Indian side for all WT20s except for last edition.

As for winning IPL, meh! Doesn't matter much.

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be seeking expert opinion from sports orthopedics in Mumbai on the state of his dodgy left knee before taking a call on his treatment, CEO Kasi Viswanathan said on Wednesday.

Dhoni had played the entire IPL season with a heavily strapped left knee and although he looked absolutely okay while keeping, more often than not batted as late as No.8 and didn't look swift while running between the wickets.

"Yes, it is true that Dhoni will be taking medical advice for his left knee injury and accordingly decide. If surgery is advised, it can only be ascertained after reports come out, it will be completely his call," Viswanathan told PTI.

Is there a possibility that Dhoni will decide against playing next season and thus free up a purse of Rs 15 crore for the mini auction, the CEO replied: "Frankly, we are not even thinking on those lines as we haven't reached that stage.

"It will be completely Dhoni's call. But I can tell you in CSK, we haven't entertained those thoughts," Viswanathan said.

Asked if CSK supremo N Srinivasan addressed the players after the fifth IPL Trophy and if celebrations were in the offing.

"He is very happy but there were no celebrations. The players dispersed for their respective destinations from Ahmedabad only. Also if you have seen CSK, we are never big on celebrations," the veteran official said.

Asked if the fifth IPL title feels the sweetest, considering the spate of injuries to its top players, Viswanathan said: "It's all about team spirit and every player knowing his role which is very well defined in our set up.

"Even a player of Ben Stokes' stature despite his nature was brilliant around the group and the youngsters looked upto to him. This has been possible because of our captain." What has been CSK's hallmark over the years which enabled them to reach final in 11 of the 14 editions that they have been a part of? "I have been associated with CSK from season 1 and we have never deviated from our process. The key has been to keep things simple and explain every player what is expected of them. In our franchise, the skipper keeps everything uncomplicated," Viswanathan said.

“But most of all, this IPL will remembered for the moment when a legend like Sunil Gavaskar asked MS Dhoni to sign an autograph on his shirt. There cannot be a bigger complement for MS Dhoni,”

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni successfully underwent a left knee surgery in a Mumbai hospital on Thursday, raising hopes of playing in the 17th edition of Indian Premier League next year. Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title, had flown to Mumbai from Ahmedabad after the final on Monday and consulted renowned sports orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who is also on the BCCI medical panel and had performed surgeries on a number of top Indian cricketers, including Rishabh Pant.

"Yes, Dhoni has had a successful knee surgery at the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday. He is doing fine and the surgery happened in the morning. I don't have details. I am yet to get all the details about the nature of surgery and other things," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to PTI.

"He will be discharged in a day or two. He would be resting for a few days before his extensive rehabilitation starts. It is now expected that he would have enough time to get fit to play in the next IPL," another source close to CSK management told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Dhoni had played the entire season with heavy strapping on his left knee and while he looked absolutely fine during wicket-keeping, he came into bat as low as No. 8 at times and didn't look in his element while running between the wickets.

On Wednesday, Viswanathan had said that whether Dhoni wants to undergo surgery will be completely the iconic captain's call.

After the IPL final, Dhoni had said: "If you circumstantially see, it's the best time to announce retirement. The easy thing for me to say is thank you and retire. But the hard thing to do is to work hard for nine months and try to play one more IPL season. The body has to hold up. But the amount of love I have received from CSK fans, it would be a gift for them to play one more season.

"The way they've shown their love and emotion, it's something I need to do for them. It's the last part of my career. It started over here and full house was chanting my name. It was same thing in Chennai, but it will be good to come back and play whatever I can. The kind of cricket I play, they feel they can play that cricket. There's nothing orthodox about it and I like to keep it simple."

Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni were two pillars on which Chennai Super Kings' fifth IPL title win campaign stood. While Dhoni led the team with his tactical genius and calm head, Jadeja provided solidity in the middle order. With CSK needing 10 runs off the last two balls in the final against Gujarat Titans, Jadeja hit a six and a four to take the team to its fift title. During the IPL 2023, there were some social media rumours of Jadeja not being happy in the CSK camp. Former Pakistan star Wasim Akram has dismissed any such rumours.

"Dhoni is a gem of a cricketer, gem of a captain. He has won the IPL five times for a single tam. It's a massive deal. Whatever team he is given, he takes them to the final. I think he has got the experience, calmness, cool head, cricketing sense, physically fit and is passionate. No matter how fit you are, if you are not passionate, the results won't be there," Akram said on Sportskeeda.

He was then specifically asked about the rumours of 'rift' between Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja.

"All these social media rumours...nowadays people write some story sitting at home and it becomes viral. Such idle we are. As far as Jadeja is concerned, the guy to bring him in, make him play, give him confidence is Dhoni...he has played for so many years under him. Why would Jadeja have any rift with him. Knowing Dhoni, if there was a priblem, he would have clearly told him, beta idhar aao (son come here) and sort out things," Akram said on Sportskeeda.

"Jadeja even said that his captain was behind his performances. This is what is called leading from the front. We must laud Dhoni and CSK for winning the IPL five times, which is one of the most difficult tournaments in world cricket. After leaving cricket, Dhoni will remain in CSK as a mentor."

A day after watching the US Open men’s singles quarterfinals match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, former India captain MS Dhoni was hosted by former US President Donald Trump to play golf at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.

If anyone can talk some sense into Trump, it's Dhoni

CSK has retained MS Dhoni as captain for IPL 2024.

Following the retentions, CSK will have a purse of INR 32.2 crore in the auction.

Ben Stokes will miss the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to workload management, his franchise Chennai Super Kings announced.

Stokes had joined CSK ahead of IPL 2023 but played in only two matches as he was managing a troublesome knee injury throughout the course of the two-month long tournament.

"England Test captain, all-rounder Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 to manage his workload and fitness," CSK said in a statement on their website on Thursday.

"The Chennai Super Kings management is supportive of Ben in his decision to manage his workload with England playing a 5-Test series in India before the IPL and then the T20 World Cup in June 2024," the statement added.

Complete Squad: MS Dhoni (captain & wicket-keeper), Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway (wk), Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajay Mandal, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Mitchell Santner, Simarjeet Singh, Nishant Sindhu, Prashant Solanki, Maheesh Theekshana.

Ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Moeen Ali lauded his skipper, MS Dhoni, in an interview with a sports channel:

“Everyone knows that Dhoni is a special player and a special captain. He is a very good guy. I have played three seasons but I don't know what he is going to come up with. His strategic persona is really good. It is exciting as a player - what role he has for you. When you are playing for CSK with Dhoni as the captain, whether the team is weak or strong on paper, you always have a chance of winning.”

“It will be silly not to (if they would take lessons from ODI World Cup). I think we have learned a lot. I think we were expecting to do it decently and see where it goes. The balance of the team was difficult. We changed a few things. I think we have a great chance in this T20 World Cup. It is too early to say if we are favourites, but we will be fine."

A great decision, grooming future Indian captain.

In a press conference ahead of the IPL 2024 opener, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming shed light on the decision-making process behind the captaincy change, he said:

"It was MS Dhoni's call with a lot of consideration looking at the future. The timing was good. It'll be a grooming process for Ruturaj."

“I am expecting MS Dhoni to play full season & do well – The body is a lot better than last year, and the desire to play & do well is like always."

He might play few games - mentor basically .... his real age should be around 45 - same as Ifti the beast but fitter !

There is no match for this guy's sharpness. He might be at the twilight of his professional cricket career, but former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni’s fitness is still top notch. In the very first match of the IPL 2024 season at Chepauk, Dhoni pulled off a brilliant run out to get rid of RCB batter Anuj Rawat.

Legendary West Indies batter Chris Gayle said while speaking to local indian media before the IPL 2024 opener:

"He (MS Dhoni) might not play all games. There may be a little break in between for him. that's why the decision. But MSD will go well, don't worry about that."

He should have opted for the mentor role for Chennai this time... he's too old to play this game now.

MS Dhoni becomes the first wicket-keeper to achieve 300 dismissals in T20s. He reached this milestone during the IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings.

Former Australian Captain Michael Clarke, while speaking on a program on a local Indian sports channel:

"I don't think he will. I think he'll stay where he is. I think every MS Dhoni fan wants to see him as high up the order as possible. We've all said throughout his career, he should open the batting."

"But look, he’s at a stage of his career where he’s down from the captaincy. I don’t think he’ll come up the order. I think if there’s a game on the line and he needs to go up the order because it’s what’s best for the team, I’m sure he will."

"...just because he’s hitting the ball so well, I don’t think you’ll see him batting in the top five or top six. I think he’s a genius at the dance. He’s probably the best finisher I’ve ever seen. So, I think they’ll continue to utilize him in that role."

I don't know if you watched the previous over
These shots are in a losing cause.
2 overs before the match could have been 50/50
That was due to Jadeja not MSD. If he had put away bad balls Jaddu could have covered that 20 runs. He didn. MSD had to deny singles . That is how pathetic Jadeja was

Dhoni has been hiding behind lower middle order batsmen and all rounders since 2015. Yesterdays blitz came when the match was pretty much done and dusted. If he had it in him, he would have 3 or 4 overs before and won the match for CSK.

Good to see him hit those shots, but they are meaningless. Only for Fans to enjoy a bit even in their defeat.

Safe to say, Jadeja needs to come even lower than Dhoni.

Dhoni might be playing his last IPL or maybe the next one will be last. I guess it is time for him to call it a day. He has done wonders and there is nothing left for him to prove. Age is also not on his side now.

Shane Watson while speaking with a local Indian media outlet:

"CSK will be learning from the little things that went wrong against Delhi in their last game and make the most of the things that went incredibly well. One thing was Dhoni, the way he batted, coming in late in the game, which will mean that hopefully, he'll move up the order when an opportunity presents itself, because he batted as well as I've seen him for a long time."

He's fully justifying his $1.5 million wage. He should keep on playing as long as he is fit and in form and he can keep mentoring guiding future CSK leaders.
