Why is Shahid Afridi acting as Coach, Chairman and Pitch Curator?

The chief selector has no authority to even talk about what kind of pitch should be used in a match. Why is Afridi saying that HE will get bouncy pitches made ?

Than Afridi even said that he wont be selecting players for the t20 team if they have a strike rate less than 135. How can he make this decision when its the coach and captain that decide the strategy of a game.

If Afridi says I wont select xyz due to him having a strike rate of 125, but Coach and Captain instructed that player to bat like that due to the context of the match, than?

Shahid Afridi is making alot of statement, considering that he is just an INTERM chief selector and not the chairman or even coach
 
Looks like having Afridi even as an interim is not digestible for some :yk :ronaldo
 
When you appoint Shahid Afridi in any role, expect a circus. He's just doing what he always does. It's the ones who have hired him who are the joke.

Afridi is clueless and a crap appointment 🙄 Dont give him credit!
 
It seems that Najam Sethi has told him to come in and sort things out and get the house in order.

To me it looks like a few people are looking over their shoulder since Afridi has been around.

Afridi had always this habit of putting his foot in mouth during his playing days. 2023 is no different by look of things.

Its easy to make decisions when you dont have to live with the consequences.
 
Afridi should be nowhere near PCB. Not the smartest or level headed person around to say the least.
 
Najam Sethi himself says he only wants to be involved in admin.. cricket decisions will be left to others.. i think afridi is doing well considering the mess wasim and ramiz had left.. ie giving all power to babar and saqlain who were blaming qudrat ka nizam and proclaiming that we are dominating..

Afridi’s appointment is a 100% political maneuver.
Afridi was very vague border line with IK and PTI - he was never open and an ardent supporter and kept his distance.

So PDM jumped on the opportunity to rope him in with the bait of offering a major role in PCB. The incentive was irresistible and Noora’s wanted to cash out on his popularity in Pakistan.

To understand his IQ, we all know, Afridi can not correctly answer 3 + 5 x 6 = ?

Make your own call to figure out if he is suitable and capable of doing this job?
 
The new guy with power wants to suck up to the bosses and make himself look great.

Happens in all work places.
 
If afridi team is only interim for the NZ series and there is no t20 in the schedule so which t20 squad will he be selecting?

Afridi is de facto director of cricket...something Misbah was appointed as in 2019 without the label, albeit.
 
The whole setup is ad-hoc.

But I am guessing Najam Sethi is giving some rope to Afridi - he messes up, he will be hung to dry

Predictable thread from a Misbah fan. They all dislike Afridi.

I wonder why OP didn't come up with a thread like this when Misbah was Head Coach and Chief Selector - effectively judge, jury and executioner of Pakistan cricket. :13:

I used to be an Afridi fan but that was a very long time ago. He promised Pakistan a lively pitch and has lived up to his words. So instead of ridiculing his contribution, we should give him some credit instead albeit very early days.

Furthermore to [MENTION=135038]Major[/MENTION] ‘s rant

The coach and captain’s strategy is flawed and unchallenged. Afridi is well within his rights to pick who he thinks are correct for whatever format.

It is up to the coach and captain to make sure that they get the best out of those players selected

Misbah’s strategy in T20 cricket is outdated

Too many of the Pakistani batsman even in domestic cricket getting too casual with these 110-125 strike rates

Why wouldn’t they? The leading run scorers in the country are ranked 2 and 3 in the world with poor strike rates. Shan Masood gets called up with a pathetic strike rate. Legit hitters like Khushdil becoming an anchor type player at number 5.

About time these selfish players are shown the door if they are not willing to step up!
 
I actually like this . Afridi calling shots and showing who is the boss . His presence is strong and people follow him unlike misbah . Wasim .

You need a strong figure in Pakistan to make the captain and coach listen . Wasim was a softie . Ramiz clearly said all authority was with babar
 
Let's see if he has matured and is ready to deal with all the criticism which he will definitely face when this team loses. Pakistanis get very emotional when we suffer a defeat. That will be his real test.

I'm sick and tired of daily statement from him, he just wants to be in news , can't he keep quite for a day at least .

Ok if Waseem was not doing a good job a selector , it was Ok to replace him for a longer term. What was such and emergency so sack him immediately and replace with someone who doesn't want to take the job . And, what exactly revolutionary changes has brought the new guy, bringing back the failed old players like Hasan and now we're hearing about Haris sohail . Same wickets, same captain , same defensive strategy . Dropping a spinner to bring back Hasan Ali and keeping Masood in playing 11.

Talking non-sense not the way to be "strong", what positive changes in selection has he brought up ?? Bringing back Hasan ALi and dropping a spinner on a flat wicket , keeping Shaan in the team ?

Hamza to keep Karachi group happy and Hasan to keep Lahore group happy , how many wickets these two took today .

Why is Mir Hamza being given an extended run? He is not taking any wickets? Was he better than Mohd Wasim? Wasim had a decent spell of reverse swing in the last match and also made a very useful score of 43 (Mohd Wasim also bowls at quick pace).

You are not understanding the point.

Chief selector has somr boundaries. They cant be making decisions which are not theres to make. No matter how good or bad the decision its not his to make.

He makes any decision as chief selector, i cant argue but him talking about pitches threatning to fire the curator, thats over the top

This Chief selector has been brought in on an emergency basis to clean up the mess started by Misbah. A mess that threatens to destroy the existence of Pakistan in white ball cricket at least.

No matter how much you complain, he will clean up!

This is not true, he is anti PTI I believe. He would rant against Imran Khan whose government was performing much better and mute now. He is hypocritical in my opinion. If he who was a balanced person, he would voice his opinion now too but no.

It’s hardly been a week since he was appointed

Already he has widened the pool of players massively by taking Babar and Saqlain’s input out of the equation

Also he has removed a lot of dead wood in the ODI side already.

Shan is the only guy left who actually needs the boot, otherwise the direction looks clear and is on the right track
 
Tbh, it seems like Afridi is getting used by PML-N or he probably wants to be used against Imran Khan

Yes, its hardly been a week but in such a short time he has created more mess , than cleaning it .

Accumulating a crowd of deadwoods is not cleaning the mess.

Tell me on what basis he has brought back and Hasan Ali and Haris Sohail, what have been their performance in Qe trophy and Pakistan cup ?

If he needs time to clean up the mess , he doesn;t want to stay at the job for longer time . Making him the selectors and everything is the most mindless decision taken by Sethi, I'm sure more to come from a person , who knows nothing about cricket ( Sethi ) .
 
There's one thing that Afridi guarantees and that's entertainment! Entertainment not just by agression but also mindlessness.

Really hope Mickey Arthur returns! Also should bring sarfaraz into ODIs in prep for the WC in India. I see him scoring some useful runs down the order.
