Why not terminate Misbah-ul-Haq's contract and replace him with Andy Flower?

If Misbah can choose to take up the role of ISLU in the recent PSLV after dictating his terms to the PCB management. Why PCB can't terminate his contract and hire a better pro coach who has vast experience with the English team like Andy Flower.

My argument is based on following facts:
- Misabah was a mediocre player and was not suited for modern day cricket with new trend of attacking cricket.
- He has awarded selection to his old colleagues like Malik, Hafeez, M Irfan, Imran Senior etc.
- He has three jobs at hand and if the selection is not right then how can he field a winning combination.
- He is afraid to experiment and that reflects in the teams reaults in all formats.

Please feel free to comment.

Thanks

Sorry but it doesn’t work like that.

As a professional firm, you can’t hire and fire just because over a personal grudge.

There is time and place for everything but replacing Misbah now is not the time.

- He finished with an averages of near 50 in Tests and mid forties in ODIs. That, by no person's definition, is mediocre. Also, regardless of one's playing style, it's their coaching approach that defines them. Giving Shadab an opportunity to bat up the order for ISLU is hardly a 'backward' step.

- He will phase out Malik and Hafeez over the next year. Remember this post.

- The three jobs at hand point is valid, in that there should be a separate batting coach. However, NZ also, very successfully had a chief selector/head coach combined role, so why can't this arrangement work for Pakistan?

- This fear of experimentation is just not true. He's given debuts to a couple of teenagers in Naseem Shah and Musa Khan, and has also called up people like Khushdil Shah and Ahsan Ali to the team, who theoretically would add some hitting power to the team. He has also encouraged Shadab to develop his batting in the PSL.

Is he a work in progress? Absolutely. Has he made selection mistakes? Yes. But it's too soon to cast judgement on his performance in is role. Best to do this, this time next year, when Pakistan have some more cricket under their belt, inshAllah post COVID 19

Also, there's a couple more relevant points here:

You can't just cancel a contract without paying Misbah his full wages over the course of that contract. PCB does not have those funds now, especially with cancelled series due to COVID 19.

Stupid post.

He just brought back Pakistan national team alive after a dark period under Mickey Arthur.

Started dominating in Tests after a long time.

Formulated the most exciting bowling attack in decades.

Whitewashed SL in ODIs.

Kicked out Sarfraz.

Not afraid of experimenting.

Just in a few months. Not even completed an year.

But of course not every tom-dick and harry would be satisfied and would have own personal grudges.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man

Nah, its too early. Misbah the loser has an uphill task of taking us to 9 again in ODI rankings. Hafeez, Malik, Akmals, Imran Khan etc must torture us for another 5 years. First round exit in T20 WC is also on his platter. We should not distract such a busy man.

Pakistan cannot afford Andy Flower's salary.

In the real world, things like this don't happen. Thankfully things don't happen based on the whims of fans.

The PCB made a choice when they gave Misbah dual roles. Whether it's the correct choice or not is a different matter. They will back their horse.

After Ravi Shastri $1.2 million a year, the next highest paid coach in the world is Justin Langer $560,000 a year followed by England $500,000 a year. The PCB pays $240,000 a year to its coach, the PCB if it wants a top candidate should have at least advertised $600,000 a year for the position.

Stupid reply.

The dark era of Mickey at least competed.

Dominating Sri Lanka and Bangladesh?

By picking Musa and Imran. The only is Naseem. Yasir Shah is back again.

Whitewashed by Sri Lanka D at home. Treated like minnows in Australia.

Bought in Imran, Musa, Akmal Shehzad etc.

What experimentation? By bringing Imran etc?

Just a few months of this torture imagine what will happen if he's already losing to Sri Lanka D at home.

But of course, only his worshipers will ignore everything and will say something along the lines of "own personal grudges".

Andy Flower can be a great coach for Pakistan. Look what he did with Multan Sultans.

Possibly the best coach in the world currently.

It was an awful decision to appoint Misbah as coach. The sooner the PCB realizes this the better

I'm not a hater of Misbah nor his blind supporter. I'm well aware of his downsides which is the flavor at the moment on PP so I would not contribute to that.

The upside which I would like to mention for Misbah is under his watch we have unearthed a potential superstar fast bowler (provided he remains injury free for next 5 years) which is Naseem. I completely understand that Misbah had nothing to do with Naseem's overall progression but we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that he is unearthed under his watch.

I have a very strong belief that we would see Haider Ali fast tracked into T20s as well. This would be an other potential good calibre LOI player that would be unearthed under his watch, so again if it happens credit to Misbah.

Finally, we have seen Babar being promoted to T20 captaincy is another positive step by him.

The point I'm trying to make above is with all flaws of Misbah we should also credit him with things like above as I'm not very confident that we would have unearthed new good calibre players under a separate coach/selector program.

PCB have invested too much into Misbah to get rid of him now. Flower would be an excellent appointment. But Misbah is here to stay unfortunately.

I fear by the time PCB realise Misbah isn't upto the job that Flower will be in top role.

It is not really feasible to get rid of Misbah at this specific time - he needs to be judged on a larger sample size.

Replacing Misbah is not how a well governed Cricket board should run.

Replacing him would be a disaster strategically. Successful cricket teams are not built with panic moves like this.

Not saying Misbah will be a hit but from a strategy point of view replacing him this early would be incompetency of the highest order.

I don’t believe that Flower would coach outside England again, or even venture outside of the country unless he felt forced to do so. He has spoken of how much he missed his family whilst working for the ECB in London and touring abroad on top of that - he became a British citizen partly to secure his family’s future in England, and also partly because he was terrified of somehow ending up back in Zimbabwe where he is very much persona non grata. So if an international cricket team is looking for a new coach, he is probably not The Guy.

Ummmm, what? Dominating?

PCB CE Wasim Khan's recent comments on Misbah:

Meanwhile, when asked if the PCB had any concern about the abilities of Misbah as a coach since his team Islamabad United failed to make the semi-finals of the league, Wasim said: “We have no concern over Misbah’s performances as it was just a four-week event. In fact for the last two months, the Pakistan team under Misbah is making progress and we are satisfied with it. We already made it clear through media in the past that Misbah should get at least one year to prove his credentials. And since both T20 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup are in the offing this year plus a few bilateral series are also coming up, it will be enough to review Misbah’s performance.”

People have amnesia, they forget everything :

1) Why Mickey was removed : Performance, Nah. People will remember those test matches vs SL. What about T20 whitewash in front of our own spectators by SL D team ???
Does anyone expected Pakistan to win WC when Hafeez, Maliks keep coming back to the team by the selectors, and we know their performances. And your chief selector was with the team for first half until India game , and as soon as he left, we started winning..
Anyways, Mickey is history now. But the main thing is Misbah was identified even before the World Cup to be part of management by IK. So, obviously, PCB set up would not say NO to their employer (PCB Patron). Don't even think this is Wasim Khan / Ehsan Mani idea to appoint Misbah and go over and beyond to allow him ISLU coachman ship...WK/EM are only executioners, all strings are in hands of our PM. He said stop departmental cricket, they stopped it. He said Sarfaraz should be thrown out, he was..

2) The luckiest man : Yes of course Misbah.. He will be new Haroon Rashid / Intikhab Alam of Pakistan cricket.. he is here to stay. Today you remove him from coach position, tomorrow he will be U-19 selector, and later may be women's coach as well. No country has wasted so much time on few individuals (failures), be it Akmals, Misbah, Hafeez, Malik. Even Wasim Akram, Afridi did not get that much leverage, even though they were much bigger match winners than these pathetic losers... Shows everything wrong with PCB

Don’t think Andy ever showed interest in the role. You can’t hire someone who doesn’t apply for a role.

Did you just call him possibly the best coach in the world based on what he did with Multan Sultans. Ridiculous.

What about everyone who was unearthed before Misbah came onto the scene? Naseem is an interesting prospect but you're making it sound like any other coach/selector would not have looked at young prospects either.

And even with the addition of Naseem or any other "talent" that was unearthed that you may be talking about, Misbah still brought back UAkmal, Shehzad, Irfan, Imran etc.

I didn't say it based on his MS performance.

He was the head coach of England team for many years and he has good experience. He is a very methodical and data-driven coach. Also, he seems like someone who prefers staying behind the scene and getting job done.

Brilliant coach.

I wonder if Andy Flower would want an international contract after how it ended with England?

I wonder if Andy Flower would want an international contract after how it ended with England?

If the money is right why not? I am sure Andy Flower will cherish the challenge of coaching a subcontinent team and which better than the mercurial Pakistani team.

Andy Flower imo is a legend of the game, its a pity he had to play for Zimbabwe which is why he never got the recognition he deserved and his career ended 4-5 years earlier than it should have but the guy had the talent and ability to reach 10,000 test runs.

Can we make this community an actionable one. Through which voices of concerned fans should reach the authorities. Except for few die hard Misbah fans, based on Misbah's exploits so far, he looks like below average coach (just like his batting and captaincy).

Will authorities hear this.. if not what's the point of this forum. Reality is Misbah is future Haroon Rashid

Just like making him head coach/batting coach/selector wasn't justified, removing him from a position so soon isn't justifiable.

Give him a year and then evaluate him

And why would Andy Flower take that position after seeing that his predecessor's contract was simply tore up?

So good time for Misbah, no cricket for at least 3/4 months.. And then he has his reason that team just came from lay off...

What a luck he has having

Andy Flower would have no interest in such a coaching gig

I dont think he is looking for international gigs anyway since they tie him down for extended periods and keep him away from home which is precisely why he left England head coaching and focuses on quick bucks in t20 tamasha leagues.

Thanks, good to see so many of you agree with my argument here. Am sure those who don't agree now will start their own thread to kick out Misbah in near future or after WCT20 :-)

I feel Andy Flower is a future Pak coach but he needs to spend more time with us in PSL and learn to love Pakistan cricket :)

The problem is the selection criteria for the role and whether it is transparent and that will put people off from applying, for example Dean Jones.

The problem is the selection criteria for the role and whether it is transparent and that will put people off from applying, for example Dean Jones.

The thing is at this level (international cricket), there is no set criteria for coaching positions. It really depends on the hiring party about what they are looking for and what your goals are for the duration of the contract. For example lets take Sri Lanka, If I'm hiring right now there is no point in going for an established coach like Kirsten, Flower etc. I have a young squad that needs to be developed. I want a coach who can work on fundamentals and is good at teaching and lead the teaching. Once the players are established and playing at a high level I reassess the coach, can he make the jump from teacher to tactician full-time and allow subordinates to continue the teaching aspects. If I don't think he can, thank him for his time and go get someone established like Flower/Kirsten who can handle tactics at the highest level.

It all depends on the competence of the hiring party. Ask 10 people what the criteria for a HC should be and you'll get 10 different standards.
