Former West Indies Captain Richie Richardson was Knighted
now he is known as Sir Richie Richardson

but my question is
why he has been awarded with this title???
what was his achievement??why walsh lara clive lloyd , micheal holding and marshall all others are ignored and he has been knighted?? he is not an ATG he is just a decent player at best

while rest of the caribian players like garner, ambrose, viv andy roberts truly justify this title whereas richie richard certainly doeesnt deserve this title

why no asia cricketer has never been knighted??

when headley and botham are knighted
then y kapil n imran were never knighted??

he was just an above average player. I think he was awarded for his county stints. Even that is pretty ordinary. there are 10s of other players who are much better and deserving.

and anyway in this age does it matter what queen has to award? Queen of England is pretty inconsequential to all but herself

Think he was knighted by the Antigua government and not by the queen of England as is the case with Curtly Ambrose, Viv Richards and Andy Roberts. Although, Viv does have an OBE bestowed upon him.

Malcolm Marshall cannot be knighted because you cannot be knighted posthumously.

Don't know about Pakistan but the Indian constitution doesn't allow holding titles, so no Indian can accept the knighthood anyway

I think, Gavaskar was offered Knighthood, but he declined. But, not sure

The main reason for Sunny Gavaskar not accepting a Knighthood was because India is Republic. Knighthood are offered to citizens of commonwealth nations such as Australia, New Zealand, W Indies etc. who still have Queen as Monarch. India being republic, do not come under Queen's control nor does India report to Queen.

Indians can however accept KBE, but as ToeCrusher2 mentioned above, Indians aren't allowed to hold any titles.

Other than Gavaskar, Sachin was also considered to offer Knighthood. In 2008 British PM was in talk to offer knighthood to Sachin Tendulkar. However, there was public uproar that Sachin shouldn't kneel before Queen( rightly so).

Even if an Indian somehow gets the Knighthood, he would have absolute no privilege in India. In other words a complete useless title(atleast in India).

Antigua retains knighthoods, and has a lower threshold than other Caribbean countries: even Ambrose and Richards - who got theirs at the same investiture ceremony - were pretty marginal calls.

The Queen bestows a knighthood, but only for people whose national government (eg Antigua and Barbuda) recommend it.

The UK government is only involved in knighthoods for UK citizens.

It was contemplated as a political stunt to curry favour with India.

The same thing happened with Nicolas Leoz, the crooked head of the Paraguay Football Association. Like Sachin, he almost received a bogus non-citizen knighthood as a bribe to vote for England to host the 2018 World Cup.

Non-UK citizens can’t get a proper British knighthood.
