Having infuriated Indians fans with his “canteen staff” jibe against Mayank Agarwal a few days ago, Australian commentator Kerry O'Keeffe produced another questionable piece of commentary on Day 4 of the third Test between India and Australia at MCG as he seemed to have questioned the names of Cheteshwa Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja.

The former Aussie cricketer had previously suggested that Indian opener Agarwal’s Ranji trophy triple ton had come against a team of “canteen staff”. “Apparently he got the triple against the Railways canteen staff,” O’Keeffe was heard saying on air during commentary responsibilities with Fox Cricket.

During his stint on the fourth day, O'Keefe was heard as saying, "Why would you name your kid Cheteshwar Jadeja?" while having difficulties pronouncing the names of the two Indian cricketers. The comment didn't go down well with Indian fans who expressed their disappointment on social media.

Although O'Keefe had apologised for his remark on Mayank's triple hundred, to be heard making fun of Indian names probably hints that the 69-year-old didn't really learn from his mistake. Later, India head coach, Ravi Shastri, had also responded to the former cricketer's attempt to ridicule Agarwal's Ranji Trophy knock.

"He [Mayank] has got a message for Kerry… ‘when you do open your canteen, he wants to come and smell the coffee. He wants to compare it to the ones back in India…coffee here’s better or the ones back home’," Shastri had said after the conclusion of second day's play.

In terms of the developments in the Melbourne Test, India are in pole position to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the 4-match series after producing an incredible all-round display with the bat and the ball. While the Aussie top-order struggled to hold ground against the Indians, Pat Cummins top-scored by registering a late half-century to take the match to Day 5.

For the same reason you will name your kid Kerry O'Keeffe.

Poor stuff, may be just to get media attention.

This particular comment is more of a joke albeit a bad one, rather than racist comment. I heard Harsha Bhogle indulging in similar jokes with other commentators regarding the length of srilankan cricketers like Vaashi.

This is just a continuation of Railway team being made up of chefs and waiters joke, that to me isn't a joke as much as a clear view of his mentality and this view of Indians.

Mildly funny joke... calling him a racist is OTT.

1 is a joke, 2 shows a mentality problem, and I am not speaking just of this, before this he used to do youtube videos, I think it was during india v Aus in india series, there were lot of similar stereotyping jokes about indian food and stuff in those too.

He can name his kid Voldermort if he wants, whats his problem?

What an embarrassing comeback by shastri... would have been better if he had not said anything at all.

"He [Mayank] has got a message for Kerry… ‘when you do open your canteen, he wants to come and smell the coffee. He wants to compare it to the ones back in India…coffee here’s better or the ones back home’," Shastri had said after the conclusion of second day's play.

What the heck :)))

Jokes usually are offensive to an extent about someone... that’s how comedy works.

He’s choosing to make India Butt of his jokes to play to galleries in Aus.

If an Indian had said this... I doubt it would have bee classified as racism.

As I was reading it... I am thinking ok here comes the clever smack down .....

No insult comedy well done is rarely offensive, this is stereotyping not comedy, If I called kerry o'keefe as usual old white guy who isn't used to non white people talking back to him, it isn't funny it's insulting and that's what O'Keeffe is doing.

Every single quote too and from in this entire exchange was at peak mediocre levels of funny. Would get the bejesus heckled out of them if they ever try to do a Stand up gig.

Indian are always outraged about something or the other on the internet.

let it go, the aussies are bitter and are showing their true colours once knowing they are about to loose first ever series to india in Aus.

People who usually end up playing victim card even for an umpire's call LBW decision going against their team are saying that Indians are over reacting.

Nobody has the right to belittle a young man's hard earned domestic runs. Especially when the same young man is spanking your premier pacers to all corners of the ground in his debut match.

Nope, O'Keffe is a basket case who has been making these jokes throughout the series now they are being highlighted. I remember the first test, where the bald genius gave the chuckle morons in the comm box the reasons for bumrah's action, apparently bumrah is from a far away village and the house he lived in did not have enough space for a full stretched bowling action so bumrah had to improvise so he has this action, this is not a made up qoute I heard it live.

Best to ignore him, but I am sure Indian social media army will jump in and make a mountain out of a molehill.

It’s just a distraction.... best reply is to win, which they are doing/ should do later today.

Shastri should never indulge in *** for tat responses again :)))

To modern soft hearted peopoe such jokes are no longer funny but offensive.

Problem with Shastri is he always looks, talks and acts drunk, national embarrassment

some of the replies are even more embarrassing, Shastri 🤦🏽*♂️🤦🏽*♂️ Mr okeefefe is out of order though another redneck @ Fox ,not really surprised

Typical casual bigotry that you'd expect to hear from a bad Billy Birmingham skit in the 80s.

I have a harder time pronouncing O'Keeffe. Coffee is easier to pronounce.

To modern soft hearted peopoe such jokes are no longer funny but offensive.

Desi people are not known for that, unless it's Russell Peters or Sugar Sammy. Then its all fun and games (still cries inside and butt hurt) - SnowFlakes at it's best.

I think he's new to commentary and is still finding his feet. He realized his folly right away and said it's been a long day blah...good old racism never dies.

TBF, Michael Vaughan started all of this when he said Pujara's county players in UK couldn't pronounce his name and started calling him Steve or whatever. That was in the first test. It just went to the next level last night.

"Kerry O Keefe"

Just leaving it out there. Sounds like a box of breakfast cereal.

This is unbelievable and more offensive than anything else

I doubt it happened otherwise it would have been a big big deal

Most of the Aussie commies are poor. This was in bad taste and some action should be taken by the broadcaster.

I heard it live my friend, try looking at some of his YouTube videos if you want, it is nonstop stereotyping, the man is as unfunny as they come.

Think he was trying to play with the word 'Keefe'.

No other explanation for such a bad comeback.

If it is a true don't see anything wrong with what Vaughan said he stating a fact. What baldy O'Keeffe said on the other hand.

This was a commentator who was so generic you could play bingo with what you expected him to say, that's how predictable he is, not really surprising he is bad at comebacks which need a bit of spontaneity.

Yes nothing wrong with what Vaughan said. O'Keefe just took it to the next level.

This has to be the worst commentary team i've ever come across.

Warne, Mark Waugh, O-Keefe, Isha, Gilchrist are awful to listen to. Dont they understand nobody wants to hear stupid jokes otherwise they would be watching comedy central.

Time and again the Aussie commies have made stupid jokes about India. These comments are pathetic.

This is not a nice joke. Has smell of racism. Indian names will always be odd for Aussies. What kind of name is O Keefe then?

Steve O'Keefe (SLAO) and this muppet Kerry related by any chance?

More disappointed with O' Keefe's insipid commentary rather than these throwaway lines.

Shastri's comeback should be put down to one too many pegs the previous night.

Shastri’s comeback is up there with Rohit Sharma’s ‘Come to India’ retort to Dale Steyn as being in the list of worst comebacks in cricketing history.

Also - Why the heck is this guy commentating? Like he is 70 and was never a regular commentator so why has he sprung out of nowhere all of a sudden. He doesn’t seem to be well travelled and is giving away comments from the 60s and 70s which would have been okay in that era. Having done a bit research I don’t really blame him as he doesn’t know any better and you cannot expect him to become cultured in these things at the age of 70. But who the heck appointed him? He just seems to be a goofy guy there for humour value but problem is that this broadcast is going to international audiences and is being broadcast in 2018 not 1978.

There is no humour about him. Every time the 'comet' is shown, he bursts into histerics because he thinks it;s very funny to see on t.v. Another time they were discussing Indian domestic teams, someone mentioned 'the railways' and he started saying things like the conducter is the batsmen, the tea boy is the bowler and the toilet cleaner is the wicket keeper, laughing to tears. To be fair to him, the rest are equally as bad but just dont like to do stand up like he does.

This is not going to go down well with Kohli and co. They are like brands in India. I expect O'Keeffe to zip his mouth and apologies soon. or maybe who knows he may even get sacked. LOL

He sounds like an idiot and I can't believe he is 50+ years old.

Idiotic comment, wouldnt mind it if it was at least funny, that was just terrible.

Keefe is an Irish name I would be fairly sure, it is pronounced Key with an f sound at the end, nothing like coffee as I've seen some say, for anyone curious.

That being said Kerry O Keefe is a dreadful name :)))

It has been very evident throughout the series that Keefe has a low opinion of desis, or is trying to bait a reaction by being controversial.

Neither is professional and I would be surprised if he is still commentating for the 4th test.

An open letter to Indian players and fans — from Kerry O’Keeffe

I have been devastated by the reaction to my on-air comments on Fox Cricket during the recently completed Third Test between Australia and India.

I am coming to terms with how negatively those words have been interpreted.

That interpretation is not who I am. It is not what I represent. My style as a commentator is to attempt to find a quirky view to lighten up some of the serious analysis. When I made a remark about Indian first-class batting averages within their domestic cricket competition being made against a “canteen” bowling attack, I was being entirely tongue in cheek. I was certainly not disrespecting Indian cricket, where I toured as a schoolboy and for which I have the greatest admiration as a cricketing nation.

I accept that some fans may not always relate to my sense of humour — but missing the mark on a joke between overs is vastly different to what I’ve been accused of on Twitter and in some sections of the media in recent days. I pride myself on doing extensive research before a match and when I stumbled over the names of Pujara and Jadeja on Day Four, I took a swipe at myself for getting them wrong.

There was no intention to ridicule those two wonderful players and I am horrified by any suggestion to the contrary. I had spent months researching and analysing these two players and when the moment arrived, I stuffed it up. The joke was on me.

My family and I are shocked and saddened that so many have been upset. I have worked alongside my dear friend and colleague Harsha Bhogle for almost 25 years. After many years on radio together, the opportunity to work with Harsha again on Fox Cricket is an absolute pleasure. The support of my fellow commentators over what has been a tough few days for me is truly appreciated.

I respect India, its cricketers and its supporters for their deep love of the game and it hurts me to think a couple of misplaced attempts at humour might compromise our mutual joy in all things cricket. While I’ve listened to the feedback to some of my calls, it’s now important for me to move on and look to the Sydney Test. I love calling cricket for a living and I’ll continue to do it in my slightly offbeat style. I’d like to think I produce more diamonds than rocks in the commentary box and that viewers will give me the benefit of the doubt if I bowl the occasional no-ball.

Yours Sincerely, Kerry O’Keeffe.

I cannot believe everybody was laughing with him. He is such lowlife that should not do commentary for international matches.

All read his open letter.

All read his open letter.

From the first there were several demeaning attacks against Indian cricket, Indian players, their names. Especially the disgusting laugh follow after each of his crass jokes is even more annoying. May be he should stick to radio commentary. He is not even that good a commie. Is there any more excitable commie than Tony Grieg, Bill Lawry? They rarely crossed the line for decades. We are not here to listen to "stand up comedy". Match analysis , reference to match situation. Then we have this clown Mark waugh who never looks like a commentator. He is a paid Australian fan. Whatever happened to Mark Taylor.

I would disregard any "Open Letter".

The 20th century has been full of candyfloss vanilla-PR so this is just water off a duck's back and probably written for him by his agency. If he really wants to apologize, do it on the medium where he believed he committed the sin in the first place - on air, in the next test.

I wont call it openly racist because i dont know O'keefe's intentions behind it but it is very insulting for the players. He should be reprimanded for it and Indians are rightly outraged. Even the others in the com box were laughing which is extremely bad behaviour.

I hope India beats Australia in the last test to shut such people up completely. When Australia will lose, this behaviour will come under more scrutiny from the public. Dont let them win because it will then hide behind the win.

He "apologized" after day 1 when Mayank easily dealt with the Aussie bowlers after being made fun of. And then went back to "banter" again a couple of days later.
