This kid is a person of Interest. I'm not making permutations here, only interested in his development.
He is 18 years old and still in school, yet has played franchise cricket (two games to be exact). Bowled brilliantly in his 2nd game picking 7-for.
He's finishing matric this year at St
Stithians College. Can bat and bowl, has done relatively well at under 19 level.
I don't want to put pressure on him, but if he keeps his head straight with good family support around him(including the coaching staff), he could be a useful all rounder for SA.
SA seems to be unleashing all rounders again.
I want to keep an eye on him, something tells me he'll be fast tracked a LA Rabada.

No place for medium pacer in modern cricket..

Are you sure about the name? I think it is Miaan Wulder. :-)

Dwaine Petrious has better numbers.

He used to bowl 140 plus, has had to cut his pace down because of injuries.

He's more of a batting all rounder. Which is what we desperately need ATM, someone who can bat in the top 6 and bowl around 10 overs a day. I don't want to mention his name because his boots are too big to fill. But if Wiaan can play a similar role, he'll go a long way into becoming a decent player.

He doesn't have the endurance for Test cricket and not penetrative enough as a bowler, or good enough to bat in the top 7.

I saw him on the U 19 WC and this guy is not slow, he was around 84mph. The guy will be the replacement for Kallis they are so desperate for , but obviously not as good.

No, why did you mention that name?
I don't want to put pressure on him, but Kallis started as a bowler who can bat a bit as well.

Who changed the title of this Thread?
I don't want any pressure on this kid, he should be left alone for at least two seasons.
He obviously needs to work on his batting ATM, he's more of a bowler who can bat at this stage.
He is a potential batting all rounder.

Wiaan Mulder - South African Potential all-rounder. Sounds better.

He is not that slow and with age he can increase his pace as well.

I have underestimated value of Kallis in the past but now I definitely see the difference without him.

A guy who can bowl 20 overs and keep one end tight would be invaluable to team because your strike bowlers can get rest without breaking down. Recent injuries SA bowlers have sustained attest to that

Kallis' rating has gone up exponentially as a cricketer in my book

Definitely a contender for top 5 cricketers ever

He often picked up valuable wickets as well. I remember him breaking some partnerships when others found it hard.

Kallis spoiled us for years, what exacerbate matters is that we don't have a spinner who can keep things tight for 20 odd overs. When he was around, he took the burden of those overs. Because he was a partnership breaker, we didn't have to over bowl him. As soon as a wicket fell we'd bring a spinner back into the attack and rest in the comfort of knowing he won't be attacked with a wicket having just fallen. Everyone remained fresh for their primary duties. He brought such balance to the side, we could even add an extra bat/bowler in the side depending on conditions. He was that reliable.

He was once in a generation player !

If Kallis had the flamboyance and impact of other great all-rounders like Sobers, Imran, Kapil or Botham, he would have been unanimously considered as the greatest all-rounder ever.

Partly because of his body language and playing style, he just didn't seem to impact the game much. One often struggles to recall his great individual all-round performances and ends up relying on his total tally of runs, wickets and catches to testify his greatness.

Wiaan Mulder will play For South Africa. He's that good. I'm even tempted to say he's a better player than Phehlukwayo at this stage of his career. In actual fact he is a better player. His stats are phenomenal for an 18 year old. The big question is where to bat him. His coach feels he's good enough to bat in the top 6. I Personally feel that his best position should be at 6 in domestic cricket and at 7 for the Proteas when he eventually makes his debut. His main competition will be Phehlukwayo, Parnell, Morris, Pretorius and maybe even Galiem who I believe is just as talented. The difference is Mulder is a far better bat than those guys.

There's actually a number of players that are doing well. Jason Smith, De Bruyn and Aiden Markram who i believe will soon be opening the batting at test level in the next few years.

And some say Ben Stokes is Kallis 2.0

Wiaan Mulder - Performance watch

Why are South Africa backing Wiaan Mulder so much?

I fail to understand what he has achieved so far in his international career. He howers around the 130kph mark and usually gets milked for a lot of runs. In terms of his batting, he really is too slow to be batting at seven.

Their are better all-rounders like frylink and viljoen, so why the obsession with Mulder? What is special about him? What talent has he shown?

Have you seen his first class averages? He's also just 20 years old, has a lot of potential to come good.

You probably don't watch SA first class cricket, their selectors know better.

Gives them a 5th bowling option if they want to play an all pace attack. He has a high ceiling as well. Could turn out to be a genuine test quality all-rounder like a certain someone also from South Africa.

The guy has some seriously impressive first class stats. Average of 43 with the bat and 23 with the ball is incredible. You can see why SAF want to back him.

Not a great start for him in his International career so far. Been targeted when bowling and getting out cheaply with the bat.

Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder has withdrawn from his planned stint as Leicestershire’s overseas player due to potential international commitments.

Mulder had signed with the expectation of being involved for a full season of County Championship cricket.

However, amid uncertainty over South Africa’s upcoming schedule, the deal has been cancelled.

“It is a huge shame that Wiaan won’t be joining us but we understand the need for flexibility in the current situation and wish him all the best for the coming months,” Leicestershire’s head coach, Paul Nixon, said.

South Africa’s only confirmed upcoming fixtures are ODI and T20I series against Pakistan at home in April and a trip to play non-Tests in Ireland in July.

However, there have been speculation of arranging tours to India in particular in the coming months.

Australia also reportedly said they would look to rearrange their postponed recent tour of South Africa “as soon as possible”.

Wiaan Mulder has not played ODI cricket for South Africa since 2019 (and has never played T20 cricket for his country), but impressed as part of the Test side against Sri Lanka at home and Pakistan away, recently.

Wiaan Mulder playing an innings of sole warrior as he had made 52*(82) so far against Afghanistan. Denying them a total subjugation of Proteas side.

A maiden Test ton for Wiaan Mulder against Bangladesh in 2nd Test

South Africa's faith in Wiaan Mulder is slowly paying off.

Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder is out of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to a fractured right middle finger, sustained during South Africa's first innings in Durban.

Matthew Breetzke has been named as his replacement for the second Test in Gqeberha, from 05-09 December.

Mulder wants to make No.3 spot his own for South Africa

Wiaan Mulder made a decent impression when batting at first drop in the ICC World Test Championship Final and wants to make the spot his own going forward.

Mulder contributed scores of six and 27 during the Ultimate Test at Lord's, with the 27-year-old's partnership of 61 with centurion Aiden Markram on the third day of the contest a pivotal moment in the Proteas' five-wicket victory over Australia.

It was just the fourth time that Mulder had batted at No.3 for South Africa at Test level, and the talented all-rounder is keen to cement that spot in the Proteas' line-up.

"To be honest, I loved it (batting at three) in this Test. I'm a bad watcher, especially knowing I'm going in next to bat, I get so nervous, and I think everyone really does,” Mulder told ICC Digital.

"If they say they don't, I think they're lying, to be honest. There are a lot of things that go through your head when you're watching when you're batting at three, you have to be switched on pretty much from the first ball.

“I didn't mind that and I really enjoyed it. And I really hope that Shuks (South Africa coach Shukri Conrad) sees me there going forward in that position as I think I can have a big impact."

The No.3 position in the Proteas' batting group is one spot that hasn't been locked in during recent times, with Ryan Rickelton, Tony de Zorzi, and Tristan Stubbs among the players to have been utilised in the crucial batting slot across South Africa's run to the Lord's finale.

But if Mulder does bat at No.3 going forward, then it allows the Proteas the luxury of being able to select three first-choice seamers and experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj in the same side.

"I think it balances our team well," Mulder noted.

"If you look at the combinations we can play, we can play Kesh up anywhere we go if I bat at three, because I can be the fourth seamer and Kesh will be your spinner pretty much anywhere in the world.

"And I think that makes us quite versatile in so many different conditions and if I can get some runs there it would mean a lot.

"To be able to get a bit more responsibility with the bat just suits my character a bit more and that opportunity to bat at three just gives me that opportunity to always have an impact on the game somewhere along the line."

Mulder won't have to wait long to get his next chance at No.3, with the Proteas scheduled to play two Tests against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in the coming weeks where a trio of first-choice batters in Markram, Rickelton and Stubbs have all been rested.

It means Mulder will almost certainly get the opportunity to make that spot his own and he can't wait to get back out in the middle.

"I haven't batted a lot at three, so it's another opportunity to learn and try and get some runs and have an impact on the game," Mulder added.

"It's going to be a little bit different mentally to this (WTC Final) Test and the preparation to this Test, because we were playing against the Aussies in probably the biggest Test I'll ever play in.

"So to get up for it is going to be a different challenge, but I love the game, so I just want to play and when I spoke to Shooks about it, I said, 'please don't even consider not playing me'."

A century on captaincy debut for the talented all-rounder. He brought up his second consecutive Test century in Bulawayo.

What a fine knock it has been so far.

Wiaan Mulder! Just exceptional!

Bringing up his maiden 150+ score in Test cricket, a monumental innings that has anchored the Proteas men brilliantly on Day 1.

A true captain’s knock filled with class

Mulder is on 352*.

Has a great chance of breaking Lara's record.

He has already surpassed Amla's 311*. He now has the highest Test score by a South African.

What an incredible innings played by the South African all-rounder. He becomes just the second South African to score 300 in Test innings

He's probably the worst batter to get a 300 atm. Getting a 400 would make it even funnier.

Mulder is the second-fastest player to reach a triple century in Test cricket, achieving this milestone in 297 balls against Zimbabwe in 2025. This puts him behind Virender Sehwag's 278-ball triple century against South Africa in 2008, but ahead of Harry Brook (310 balls vs. Pakistan, 2024), Wally Hammond (355 balls vs. New Zealand, 1933), and Matthew Hayden (362 balls vs. Zimbabwe, 2003) in the list of "Quick Triples" by balls faced.

Strange decision to declare instead of creating a world record which probably going to last next 2 decades at least or more given how fast and quick test cricket innings has become and we rarely see big 200s now days.

Should have let him break Lara's record so people who never saw that innings would stop glorifying that selfish knock.

Unlike Lara's knock, Mulder's innings will win South Africa the match too. And regardless of how his career turns out he would have forever etched his name in history with a 400.

Strange decision considering it's just Day 2 and the result is in no doubt whatsover.

Dare I say he rejected the fate's reward.

He did that in respect of Lara apparently, but should have gone for the kill

Agree.

It was foolish to declare at 367* (considering it was only Day 2 Session 1). This is a submissive mentality. :inti

This is why South Africa don't win many ICC trophies. They do not go for the kill when it is required.

I don't understand this concept of "respecting" the record. When it's there to be broken, why can't they take the chance?

Mulder is the captain I think
Yes and I find this decision extremely puzzling. May be he is just a puppet captain? No sane person would have declared when the history is about to be make.
Considering the fact that it's his first test as captain, and just based general things I've observed, I think coach Shukri Conrad is calling the shots here.

Even before Mulder got to 350, South African bowlers in the dressing room were seen inspecting at the new balls.

Dated analogy but...

I'd liken it to me going to a video game arcade, being on the cusp of breaking ShaniTerror99's high score in Pac-Man and then right as I'm about to, I stop playing and say: I can't do it, I respect ShaniTerror99 too much.

Can you imagine that? All the kids would have laughed at my face back in the day

Why does everyone keep taking away the things babar is known for?

1) Best orthodox batter in odi cricket at present= Joe Root.

2) No 1 Odi batsmen: Virat Kohli

3) Best Zimbabwe Basher: Mulder

4) Best Flat Track Bully: Harry Brook

Everyone has taken away his status
He is still the best Nepal Basher

Agree.

It seems like South Africa care about these optics a lot.

For example, when Bangladesh timed out Angelo, bowling coach Allan Donald wasn't happy and BCB had to summon Donald for it. Donald was eventually let go.

South Africa should've let Mulder score 400 and also let team score 700. Their highest Test score is 682. They could've broken all these records and they had lots of time to do so.

THIS IS WIAAN MULDER'S THREAD. NOT INZI OR PAKISTAN TEAM THREAD..

PLEASE KEEP IRRELEVANT STUFF AWAY
