See above to understand the impact of funding on sports (other than cricket)

The only way to get all of Pakistan to contribute to this in sports.

I understand Lottery may get opposition to the gambling nature but there are plenty of "Islamic" competitions that can get the public to contribute towards this cause.

The public isnt consciously contributing to the cause by buying lottery tickets. In fact its not even on peoples minds when they buy a ticket.

Its just a way for the lottery organizers to maintain some respectability.

Unfortunately there is no way for such a system to be implemented in Pakistan.

I think a national lottery is a great idea in any normal country.
Problem with having it in Pakistan is that the people will probably say its haram as its a form of gambling.

Even if you get around this issue, the problem will be having a company that organises the lottery will probably skim 40/50pct from the pot due to the existing corruption.

If the country allows such a scheme then it will have to be carried out by a foreign entity that doesn't loot the people.

Not if you win it :)

There are many schemes in Islamic banks which allow people to win money etc - point is that some sort of public scheme to finance sports in our country

I think it's a great idea but it has to be run properly and funds not being diverted away from the causes.
It will be so difficult to audit something like this on such a large scale

I remember the 1989 SAF games that were held in Pakistan were also funded via a Raffle/Lottery. They would give away a Suzuki FX (800 cc) every week :)

Sad but true.

there is a fundamental difference in attitude to sports in both countries. in the uk it is actively encouraged by parents as part of a holistic education, in Pakistan its considered a waste of time for the most part.

you want to fix pak sports, fix it in schools first. schools have the best economies of scales to find talent, especially in sports like track and field.

there also needs to be some platform which exploits local sports, like wrestling in gujranwala, or polo in the north.

but before anything else, fix hockey, its the only sport which is played to any decent level in pak and there is some decent level local participation in

The payback for the respective sport has to be attractive. Parents will rightfully not let their kids waste their prime years of their lives in pursuing a sport where the struggle is massive, where the system is horribly corrupt and the opportunity cost b/w persuing an education and striving in a sport where the payoff is not that big or guaranteed is massive.

Contrast this to African Americans, every African American parent is desperate for their son to make in the NBA because it truly is the difference b/w a life of poverty, lower middle class lifestyle to living in mansions in no time.

most non-desis ive known grew up playing sports, not to make money and go pro, but because its considered a part of a holistic education, growing up healthy and learning to deal with competition.

i also know plenty of guys who had an upbringing similar to the latter paragraph, but even after they knew theyd never go pro they still make time to play sports because its a lifestyle choice.

most kids, under 16 arent studying 24/7. if they spent even 3 to 4 hours a week in organised competitive sport, especially the cheaper to organise sports, you could identify the talent worth investing in early. it would also reduce instances of children getting involved in crime.

Problem is as a nation we are not invested in sports in the long term.

Our interest in stuff like Weightlifting etc only comes up when an event like Olympics takes place - no attention given during the intervening years.
