Will anyone ever replace Kapil Dev as greatest Asian bowler in Australia?

11 matches, 51 wickets @24.58, 5 fifers, one 8 wicket haul

Wasim Akram came very close with 36 wickets.

Someone like young Jasprit Bumrah could replace Kapil in future. He has pace, can bowl a good line length and has lots of cricket left in him.

Having said that 50+ test wickets in Australia is a HUGE deal for an Asian bowler. Historically Australia has been a graveyard for Asian bowlers.

Even the great Imran Khan was ineffective in Australia.

Ineffective in which way? He helped Pakistan win 3 tests in Australia ,averaging 15 with the ball and 43 with the bat in those matches.

How many of Kapils victories led to a match win for India?

Classic swing bowling from Kapil. What a spell! 106/8

Absolutely unplayable swing bowling from Kapil here. Beating some quality batsmen and making them look clueless! Wow!

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bXSrx4Uvtqs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

if you include world series cricket their bowling records aren't that different

kapil dev 11 tests, 51 wickets at 25, 355 runs at 20

imran khan 16 tests, 70 wickets at 26, 860 run at 33

now when you allow for the fact that imran didnt really bowl in his last 5 tests, 4 wickets at 50 odd, the stats arent really that different tbh.

It was a good spell but not unplayable as you mentioned, otherwise KD would have had figures like 8/28 or close to it, not 8/106 with the Aussies making 400!!

I would add that the 1975-76 and 1976 speed tests had remarkably consistent results:

Exhibit A: Thomson 160.45 in one, 160.6 in the other.

Exhibit B: Roberts 159.4 in one, 157.4 in the other.

Exhibit C: post spinal injury Lillee 148.54 in one, 154.8 in the other.

Exhibit D: Holding 150.67 in one, 153.2 in the other.

Frank Pike’s discredited 1979 study failed to measure delivery point or height. The “winner”, Thomson, was drunk and halfway through a one year ban. His speed of 147.9 was the lowest by him ever measured.

Startled that Lillee was found to be at Holding speed.

Frankly gobsmacked that Roberts was quicker than both, though I never saw him bowl.

thats it, i am decisively ending this thread once and for all.

kapil dev was a decent bowler in that era and has a decent record in australia. then again that australia was a weak team in the 80s after the kerry packer saga.

to put kapil devs figures into perspective, why not look at the stats of his contemporaries in australia?
Hadlee? Marshall? Garner? Holding? Botham? you will see where this kapil dev really is.

all that has been done is show the figures of pakistani bowlers, by all means, pakistan sets no benchmark for how to bowl in australia
those conditions are as unfamiliar as they come, historically pakistani cricketers have alot of county cricket in england is why pakistan has a good record in england, the only pakistani to play shield cricket is Imran, and he has the best pakistani record there.

And will anybody replace kapil dev from that artificially created first place?

as cricket's popularity wanes in australia, and as the sheffield shield stops producing batsmen of international standard, as australia becomes more and more like the west indies, it appears that is only a matter of time taht somebody accrues a better record in australia.

Roberts was absolutely ferocious.
Most great batters of 70s and 80s rate him the best ever, ahead of both DK and Marshall. His 12 for 121 in chepauk, madras, 1975 came on a pitch that saw 500+ scores thrown up in every Ranji game of that season and era.
A bit like young Steyn. Bowled well within himself most times, until suddenly a 150+ kph shot out of nothing.

Bro, Kapil bowled well no doubt, but his stats were buffeted by his 25 wicket haul in that 0-4 loss in 1991. I saw that live. He was like Anderson, slow loopy outswing, efficient but hardly effective. Oz routine scored 350-400+, but Kapil would end up with a 4-100 in 40 overs.

In fact, if one goes purely by stats, then Manoj Prabhakar finished with 19 wickets at a decent average in the 5 tests during the 91-92 season.
But hardly the stuff of nightmares, was he?

As opposed to the bionic eyes of ex-cricketers?

What a spell.

Never seen anyone from the subcontinent bowling better than that in Australia.

I remember Wasim Akram in 2002 three match ODI series. He was great with his new ball spells. Even that pales in comparison to Kapil making players of the stature of Border and Jones look clueless with his beautiful swing bowling.

Thanks jeetu !
Can you please confirm that at 14.55 you hear this: "lovely style a full toss ... still it is the speed that it leaves the hand that counts so lets just have a look and find out just how fast it did leave Wayne Daniels hand ... 123.6 "

The thing about stats is that a bowler can get 7/140; opposition all out for 350. This is impactless bowling in context of a test match if bowler's team loses.

On the other hand a 3/80 in a match-winning spell has more weight than the 7fer above mentioned.

KD was a legend and ATG all rounder. I am in awe of his fitness.

But I don't buy him being the greatest from Asia. No way.

I won’t bother downloading this file if all I get is the host making the posted comment.
Tusker where is the scientific evidence you said Dr Frank Pyke had clarified?

Good bowler but damn that's some club level shoddy technique and batting

It was three deliveries 🤔 I don’t want to sound harsh but Indian fans have limited choices when talking about quality and pace bowling

What's the reason for that? It's a 30 min original video broadcast by Channel 9.

Tusker where is the scientific evidence you said Dr Frank Pyke had clarified?

He is in that video . Unless you think Ch9 makes up whatever they want too .....

Any chance you want to tell us why everyone is not bowling full tosses if speed was measured at the batsman end?

Startled that Lillee was found to be at Holding speed.

Lillee wasn’t quite as fast as Thomson in the 1970’s but he was still probably the second fastest white fast bowler.

Roberts was very quick indeed until 1976, and Holding was still not at his peak pace-wise at that time.

Roberts had one huge trick. He bowled a “normal” bouncer at around 140K - almost all Express bowlers are slower when they pitch it short. But with an identical action he could also bowl a much much faster bouncer, which was lethal.

What people don’t understand about the 1970’s is this. The quick bowlers were brought up:

1. For the English, after rationing (Snow, Willis).

2. For the Aussies, in an era of wealth and good diet across all social classes. (Lillee And Thomson has been well nourished as kids but not brought up on Coke, chocolate and KFC).

3. For the West Indians, this was the independence generation which was the first to be well fed but not overfed on junk.

The development of 40, 55 and 60 overs county cricket also meant that the quick bowlers were Year-round pros with proper training regimes. (Although in the cases of Roberts and Holding and Garner, they chose to conserve their bodies by reducing their speed).

Lastly, fast bowling was yet to be ruined by “sports science”. There is still no sports science based on cricket: the likes of James Pattinson and Shane Bond have had their careers ruined by exposure to sports scientists from Rugby League and Rugby Union backgrounds (yes, I know Pattinson is from an AFL state). These men - and Shoaib - end up with bloated upper bodies designed for speed but not stamina.

The contrast with Imran Khan or Richard Hadlee is huge. They knew that their fitness work needed to be running, with just enough weights to maintain enough speed.

In effect, paces have reduced in the last 40 years due to the effects of a worsening fast food diet in childhood and due to bad training regimes.

What's the reason for that? It's a 30 min original video broadcast by Channel 9.

Because you said the Dr. had clarified the method, you then go on to ask a fellow poster about comments the voice over guy is making....
For me the ICC Spirit of Cricket event with IK, Thommo and Mark Nicholas is the proof that you need to counter. You seem to be failing miserably.

Ask the bowlers this question, I wasn’t there tutoring them.

Which is where a well balanced bowling attack comes into picture.

If Kapil was having the figures you mentioned thats terrific bowling and he's not only doing his job but keeping it tight as hell. With some support from the other end things could have been so different.

Kapil Dev did what many top bowlers would not have been able to do. Carrying the entire bowling line up on your shoulders is no joke. Kapil did that for 15 years without complaints.

Because you said the Dr. had clarified the method, you then go on to ask a fellow poster about comments the voice over guy is making....

these are two separate things. But do tell us why you wont take information available within the original Channel-9 video itself as evidence. I asked jeetu because you were dragging your feet. Anyhow here is the original video watch from 5:55 to 6:16 and then from 14:55 - 15:11. Thats right the video mentions it twice and Dr. Frank Pyke is right there in the video ... don't need any further confirmation.

So After you are done watching I hope you will come back here and inform us what you found and we will ask other posters to do the same to confirm. Something tells me we might not see you again on this thread.

thats not how fact checks work. Else we will be taking Trumps word for things like inauguration crowd size, Russia's role in elections, Stormy etc etc. It doesnt work that way.

Ask the bowlers this question, I wasn’t there tutoring them.

Thats for you to do as you are the one claiming that speeds were measured at batsmans end. If that was the case they should have been bowling full tosses.Simple logic suggests that was not the case.

Fascinating that Roberts was clocked at nearly 97 mph, quicker than Holding.

As for the veracity of these measurement, consider that we had landed on the Moon six years before that, and even in 1960 had missiles that could track and knock down a plane flying at 90,000 feet of altitude.

Except the moon landing computer systems had way lesser processing capabilities than a smart phone today. We literally went on a wing and a prayer

Except the moon landing computer systems had way lesser processing capabilities than a smart phone today. We literally went on a wing and a prayer

Not literally, because the Apollo had no wings. There is no air in space so wings would not work.

The smartphone analogy is inappropriate as they didn’t need to be able to stream Breaking Bad or listen to Deezer, while the ground control and on-board systems were quite accurate enough to get the Apollo to the Moon and back, as proven six times. A task much more complex that working out the bowling speed of Jeff Thomson.

Harold Larwood’s top speed was 156 kph. Given the kind of pitched he played on and the poor quality of protective gear he must have been the terrorising bowling figure of all times! Robert

No Response to Post#104 ?

Nothing new in what you posted, but here is what you wrote earlier:
Except he (Thommo) isn't the horse here. The measurements were all done by Dr. Frank Pyke and he himself has clarified that the measurements were done at the bowlers end

Do you have the clarification from the Dr.? No

The clarification is right there in the form of video. Not once but twice. Please state the reasons why you don't accept that as evidence.

Not from Pyke as you falsely claimed:
a) Pyke has had many requests to clarify but for whatever reason has not done so. You answer why.
b) Thomson’s words in the ICC event when he says Pyke told him the measurements were from the batters end. Pyke still failed to say anything.
c) Many cricket forums specifically contacted Pyke to ask his view point after that ICC event. Please confirm if you can find a response from him.

Not from Pyke as you falsely claimed:

As I said in one of my earlier posts these are two separate things:

1. Original Video clearly states (Twice!) that the measurements are release speeds ( which you do not accept for some reason ). This is done in Pyke's presence. No reason to believe this is a blatant lie.
2. Pyke clarification after the fact (See below)

a) Pyke has had many requests to clarify but for whatever reason has not done so. You answer why.

How do you know that he has not clarified. (See below )?

b) Thomson’s words in the ICC event when he says Pyke told him the measurements were from the batters end. Pyke still failed to say anything.

There is no mention of Pyke in Thomsons statement nor is he present in that ICC Event. Its funny that you accept Thommos words but not the original Channel 9 video.

Most importantly why did Thommo and all other bowlers not bowl full tosses if they knew it was measured at batsmans end ? Doesnt add up.

c) Many cricket forums specifically contacted Pyke to ask his view point after that ICC event. Please confirm if you can find a response from him.

Correct this is what I meant.

Jaspreet Bumrah is the man.

He might replace The Great Dev

Bumrah has the ATG vibe.

Let's hope he has a long career.
battler was right. :)

Thanks :). What's his average currently? 21? If he manages to keep it under 25 after his career is done then not only will he be India's greatest ever bowler but also an All time great of the game.
What a jem this guy is turning out to be!

Best figures by an Indian pacer in Australia:

9/86 Bumrah, MCG, 2018
8/109 Kapil Dev, Adelaide, 1985
8/160 Agarkar, Adelaide, 2003

No one can replace Kapil.
He was one of his kind.

Bumrah is doing good and I will not compare him with anyone.
That is because he is unusual, almost sort of a freak one could call.
He has the awkward action, good delivery release position, great speed, plays all formats.

To be compared with anyone he should play cricket non-stop for 5 years atleast.
In the era of IPL, he should play 5-6/14 matches of IPL and look after himself well.

Whole of India will pray that Kapil's replaced by an Indian bowler as the greatest in Australia

Bumrah might overtake Kapil in terms of wickets.
But the achievements of Kapil - when he had almost zero support in the bowling department - he was the bowling Tendulkar of 1979-1989.
And I am not even talking about all-round exploits, captaincy etc.
But bowling ability , burden of that role and non-stop cricket for 15 years is not a joke - much like Tendulkar till 2003.

So, I rate Kapil above Bumrah.

As for Bumrah, the best thing to happen to Indian team since shami and kumar to Indian cricket - one of the high points for Indian cricket in the last 5 years, his exploits I would say. India, as you might already know, starved for fast bowlers for so long ...

I can't disagree with you my brother.

Kapil's in a league of his own. He's one of the greatest cricketers ever.,

Highly unlikely for a spinner but it could be Kully Yadav as well!

I’m a bit surprised that Bumrah didn’t do better in Australia.

Against a minnow batting line-up he averaged an excellent 17, but he only took 21 wickets in 4 Tests, with one five wicket bag.

And that even though the spinners were toothless and the other quicks were mediocrities like Ishant and Shami.

He is very promising, and I expected a bit more.

Good to hear.
I think this is the first time you said something good about a fast bowler from india.
But wait.
Shami is mediocre?
In what way is he mediocre.
He trio of Ishant shami and bumrah became the highest wkt taker in a year, so its obvious that none of them is mediocre.

3 and half test and 21 wickets ( Aus one inning was washed out).

Did you expect 30 wickets from one bowler in 3 and half tests?

Need to cut him some slack, it's very difficult for him to praise Indians so he has to out in a snide remarks in between.. we should appreciate how difficult it is for him right now..

New Delhi: Ranveer Singh made cricket icon Kapil Dev's birthday a memorable one with a special birthday wish on Instagram: "Happy Birthday, legend! Thank you for showing us the way. You made us proud. Now it's our turn," he wrote. Ranveer Singh has been cast as Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan's sports drama '83, which tracks the story of India's historic World Cup win in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. Deepika Padukone plays the role of Kapil Dev's wife Romi Bhatia in the movie, which marks her first film with Ranveer after they got married.

Ranveer Singh's birthday wish for Kapil Dev came in the form of three photos from what appears to be '83 sets.

Ranveer Singh released his first look from '83 on his birthday last year, sending fans into a tizzy for his amazing transformation into a younger Kapil Dev. "On my special day, here's presenting the Haryana hurricane, Kapil Dev," he had written.

Earlier, Kapil Dev had given a massive shout out to Ranveer Singh with "The past with the present" post.

Ranveer Singh trained with Kapil Dev on the film's sets in Dharamshala and also spent some time with him at his residence to further perfect his character. Speaking to news agency IANS earlier, Ranveer had said: "I think what I gained from Kapil sir has been invaluable. There is no other way I'd do it. I am very fortunate, privileged and honoured that he welcomed me into his home. He was warm, welcoming and forthcoming. Everything I gained from him during those days is going to be invaluable for the construction of my performance," he added.

Directed by Kabir Khan, '83 releases on April 10.

I am really quite surprised that kapil dev has the most wickets in Australia as an Asian but even more shocking thing is that with these record is that out of 11 matches he was only part of one test match win in Australia where as Imran Khan was part of three test wins in Australia well I guess even a mighty Kapil dev could not be a match winner to a same degree as imran khan with these great stats that is quite unbeleivable

Bumrah so far in first test:-

13 overs, 15 runs, 2 wickets

Best Asian pace bowling attack in Australia:-

1. Jasprit Bumrah
2. Wasim Akram
3. Kapil Dev
4. Imran Khan
5. Saqlain Mushtaq/Anil Kumble/Ravi Ashwin

You realy cannot understabd how Imrans team with bowlers like wasim and waqar to support him will win more than Kapil who was the sole good bowler in his team? Are you pretending?

I love how you call one bowler a match winner as if there was no other bowler in either team. The very first thing we learn in school is that to compare 2 things on group statistics, all other parameters should be same

You can compare individual on individual stats and teams on team stats. Wickets and average and strike rate are individual stats. Wins or losses are team stats

Posts like these are why no one takes you seriously even when you make good posts

3 and half test and 21 wickets ( Aus one inning was washed out).

Did you expect 30 wickets from one bowler in 3 and half tests?

thats 3 wickets ever innings. Wow. Junaids is a comedian

Ineffective in which way? He helped Pakistan win 3 tests in Australia ,averaging 15 with the ball and 43 with the bat in those matches.

How many of Kapils victories led to a match win for India?

Why would you compare victories which are team stats? Imran had wasim ans waqar, kapil had no one

How does it make any sense to pull out team statistics to compare individuals? Even if he had averaged 5 with ball and 100 with bat pakistan would not have won if other players had not stepped up

Imran won all 3 matches in Australia without having Wasim and Waqar.

Just goes to show how much harder it has become to bowl in the modern era with the current kookaburra, pitches etc. especially in a country like Australia. Unless you are 140 + consistently or have a high release height, its nigh impossible to do well here.

And with teams easily able to watch the footages and figure out your weakness.

Bumrah bowled very well.. He can dethrone Kapil in Australia.

Kapil was nothing special. From current Indian team Bumrah, Shami and Ishant are far better bowler than him.

Most Test Wickets vs AUS by Indian

Anil Kumble - 111
Harbhajan - 95
Ravi Ashwin - 79*
Kapil Dev - 79

the term match winner to me means simply performing or contributing individually in some notable capacity to your team"s performance which helped ur team in WINNING that match ,

now we can argue about what is the definition of match winner? what I understand from ur posts is that it is an individual record so it should have nothing to do with their team"s winning/losing/drawing the match, correct me if I misunderstood you but I weigh in both the individual record plus did it helped his team won the match or not if not then I don't rate it to be a match winning performance in that match

the definitions could be different for different people hence comes the change in opinion between you and me

Kapil is the best Asian bowler statistically in Aus , stats dont lie but I dont agree with ur statement of "biggest match winner from Asia in Australia" as I believe to be a match winner you have to have helped your team win matches not draw or lost or be the best stats Asian bowler

Bumrah is in different class than Dev.

Only 2 Asian pacers have 50 plus wickets under 25 average outside Asia.

Bumrah - Avg 21.2 SR 47 9 5-fers

Wasim - Avg 24.8 SR 57 14 5-fers
