The grounds and the boundaries are huge. A lot of Sri Lankan batsmen who have been used to big hitting on smaller sun continent grounds were caught well inside the boundary today against Namibia

I think this T20 World Cup will require more twos, three's and more boundaries rather than sixes because subcontinent players who are very used to playing on smaller grounds, boundaries in the subcontinent are going to find six hitting playing aerial shots very difficult.

Good news for Rizwan and Babar then. :inti

While the boundaries might be big but the ball also travels further due to the true bounce and pace. Also the dubai stadium has pretty decent sized boundaries. The boundary size for an icc tournament will not be that much bigger.

Qaddafi stadium & National stadium are quite big as well & we had a chance to use them for the practice but instead we used 65-70 m boundary for the England series

Grounds are not exactly looking gigantic

Fairly evened out

The final venue for the Tri series was a proper sized ground, as big as the typical Aussie ground I’d say. Nawaz and Haider cleared the boundary with ease.

Big boundaries shouldn't hurt Pakistan a lot.

Rizwan and Babar are brilliant at strike rotation and finding gaps. They will steal a lot of runs that they shouldn't be allowed to get.

At the back end Asif Ali is definitely capable of hitting sixes anywhere in the world, but rest might struggle to clear the fence.

India has the most impressive 6 hitting record in Australia both in ODI and T20 better than anyone else

Last 5 years

TESTS

India 37 sixes in 8 tests
England 21 sixes in 10 tests
NZ 7 sixes in 3 tests
Pakistan 2 sixes in 2 tests
Srlanka 2 sixes in 2 tests

ODIs

India 37 sixes in 6 innings
England 27 sixes in 5 innings
SA 12 sixes in 3 innings
NZ 10 sixes in 4 innings
Zimbabwe 2 sixes in 3 innings

T20Is

India 32 sixes in 6 innings
SL 28 sixes in 9 innings
England 25 sixes in 5 innings
Wiindies 11 sixes in 2 innings
Pakistan 8 sixes in 3 innings
NZ 4 sixes in 1 inning
SA 3 sixes in 1 inning

And Kohli, Williamson too. They like to run as they do not have the power and array of shots like the T20 specialists.

That is flat-out untrue. Both have power. Just that Kohli's first instinct is to keep the ball down. He always rolls the wrist. A reason why he is more consistent than others. Only when it is needed he brings out his aerial shots. He is still one of the flattest six hitters. He can just flick over midwicket for six. Then there is inside over extra cover six those are outrageous shots.

That's very impressive from Indian players on the big grounds of Australia. Thought they would struggle to clear boundaries over there after getting used to playing on small Indian grounds.

Have Both SA and NZ played only one T20I in Australia over the last 5 years?

If you have good technique - you can hit sixes in Australia as well. Jayasuriya used to hit sixes for fun in Australia

Rohit SHarma has been a prolific six hitter in Australia. Even KL Rahul and Surya Kumar were hitting sixes today

India side have the most six hitters from Asia. Surya, Pandya, Rohit , KL Rahul all capable of hiring big sixes

Powerhitters would have no problem clearing these boundaries and India have many of them, even AFG and SL have a couple.

Sixes are a must in T20s.

An example from Pakistan v England match today, though it was a warm-up:

England hit 12 6s = 72 runs
Pakistan hit only one 6 = 6 runs

Just look at the difference here!

Not really. The focus should be on limiting the number of dot balls and picking up more twos and threes. Placement will be far more important than power.

This is why I expect Babar to do well. Hopefully, Rizwan tweaks his game and scores runs as well but the bounce might do him in.

Only Pakistan needs to be concerned here. Other teams have plenty of big hitters. Come next world cup, we'll be discussing the same topic again. England turned it around from meek test cricketers to one of the most destructive batting lineup in the world.

One way this can be done is to identify genetically gifted kids in schools and colleges from an early age, and then offer them cricket scholarships contingent to adhering to a strict nutrition and workout plan and future participation in PCB events.

India learnt this the hard way in 2016 World T20 semi final against West Indies

Indians were running 2s and 3s while West Indians were hitting sixes for fun and keeping the RRR under check. That was when there was bit of mindset change for India and they realized the importance of six hitting in T20

It is the players. Rohit sharma hit 7 sixes in in his 79 even in 2010 on a bouncy wicket

That was the spiciest pitch in that WC. 23 year old Rohit was hitting sixes for fun against Johnson, Tait, Dirk Nannes and Watson. No other Indian batsman could lay bat on ball. He had the highest SR in that match even after including Aus batsmen IIRC.

In Australia its difficult to hit sixes of fast bowlers straight down the ground ( unless u have raw power like Chris Gayle or KP)

But its relatively easy to hit sixes over point or fine leg - bcoz of the extra pace and bounce.

On one of the ovals, the straighter boundary is 80+ meters. In pp, that will help babar alot as all you need to do is play a drive and its a boundary.

Rotation of strike will matter alot but im hopeful that Iftikhar will perform here as he plays well on these grounds

Afghanistan is gonna struggle here as they dont do much strike rotation. Hitting sixes is not easy here and which is why i think Asif Ali and Khushdils career are gonna end in this world t20.

Ifti will succeed with strike rotation

CricViz reported that from all nations, Australia has the 2nd lowest % of runs coming in boundaries in T20s so our powerhitting limitations may not be as exposed.

However our running between the wickets was comical today, that too in an empty stadium !

Not everywhere. MCG straight boundaries are manageable. But side boundaries are huge. You have to absolutely nail it. If the bowler bowls fast you can use the pace. But if it is slow clearing square of the wicket requires power.

Only India have the hitters. They are due a tournament win aswell.

If anyone other than England Australia or India win will be a huge upset.

saw a clip of shoaib malik speaking from his experience of playing in BBL. he said..though the boundaries look big in AUS, you need not worry the bounce and pace is so true that if you hit well the ball will travel easily for a six.

I think he is correct here, but if you don't time it well then you will get caught in the deep for sure like today's ind warm up match, unlike some of the sub continent stadiums where even many mishits fetch you 6.

As I have been talking about this factor in my posts over the last few weeks. Thanks for picking up on this and creating a new thread.

Yes, INDEED that's a factor and a big one. ESPECIALLY for Pak players.

The biggest factor is, miss-hits won't go for a six if they are playing in 80 yards or more. You gotta have the right connection and right amount of timing/power behind the stroke to hit a six, otherwise, you are probably going to get caught.

Second, it will take some toll on the players' fitness during the fielding while almost every team will realize the ground size and look for more singles and doubles and threes.

Pak players should realize this and stay in their aukaat and play with a focus on hitting fours, get a few 3's and mostly shoot for twos and ones.

This is could be good for our middle order if they identify this reality and use it for their own advantage. Which means, do NOT show heroics, something that you are not capable of, to begin with.

However, this is also bad news for Nawaz and Asif. The must look for more fours rather than sixes. Play wisely by identifying the ground realities compared to your skill level.

Again,
Pak bigger hitters; LOOK FOR 4's and not Sixes. 8 out of times you will get out if u trying to hit six in big grounds.
Top order; try to take advantage of power play, and give us a reasonable at the end of power play.
And middle order; stay in your aukaat and look for one and twos rather than tuk tuk tuk, and get out in attempt to hit big under a self imposed pressure situation.

Australia is THE ONLY place where I have seen batsmen running 4 runs (without misfield or over throw) in a T20 game while the fielder chased the ball to save the boundary. This is how large that one particular venue was.

These large boundaries ARE TRULY what we need in all T20 games all over the world because they separate boys from men.

Even if you time it well you can still get caught in the deep. DK nailed that shot towards the longest part of the ground. Over 80 plus meters. He was caught on the edge of the circle.

Need to bat smartly.

You can't expect most of the Pakistani batters to hit huge sixes on those grounds out there.

Better to bat to your strengths.

Lol at Pakistani batsmen strengths. Most of our hitters have struggled in Pakistan, UAE, expecting them to strike big in Australia is unrealistic but they will have to attempt the big hits at some point in the innings depending on the match situation i.e. last few overs or if chasing a big score.

The hitters will need to find the gaps and aim to hit more boundaries than sixes.

Without hitting many sixes it is very much possible to score 175+ in Australia.

If my memory serves me well. In 2016 t20 semi final at wankhede, India only hit 3 or 4 sixes maximum in entire match on a much smaller ground at wankhede & still scored 190+ easily.

Yes they lost but dew factor played a part too and no balls. Australian grounds for sure are bigger than wankhede + dew is no factor neither toss.

If Pakistan can hit 2 to 3 sixes in each of the matches ( which they can surely) they can definitely put 175-185 scores easily. There ll be lot of blubdaries, twos & threes on offer.

That was because India had Rahane in the side who consumed 35 balls. Around 6 overs. He was not a six-hitter. The usefulness of six-hitting is underestimated. Suddenly you have a new batsman not finding his touch and ends up consuming 2 overs for not many. Your asking rate goes over 12,13. You will be forced to take chances. Will you think about six 2s at that time? Pakistan himself was bailed out by sixes couple of times. Naseem Shah vs Afghanistan, Asif Ali vs Afghanistan and couple of other sides.

6s are underrated in all formats. Signs of dominance.

You can see the dominant teams of most eras hit the most 6s.

We at best will score 170. Unfortunately we haven't had enough firepower since 2011 I'd say.

2 batsmen from the 2000s I was more scared of clicking. 1) Jayasuriya 2) Afridi . They instill fear not just in opposition but also viewers of opposition. You just hope they make a mistake. Purely because of their six-hitting skill. It completely demoralizes the opposition. Shoulders of the bowler drops.

Afghanistan have found it tough but NZ didn't

Anyone would find it tough against this England attack. Unreal performance from them. The Afghans normally aren't afraid to throw the bat but they were helpless today.

Brainless batting by Afghanistan today. Zero strike-rotation and constantly tried to target the longer boundaries. Their batting was badly exposed in these conditions and will be exposed again by Australia and New Zealand.

Ifti, Kohli and Pandya proved that big hitting with the right technique will work in Australia. At the same time Haider and Shadab showed that wild slogging too will not work.

Iftikar trigger movements is a give away that he can hit big six. The body alignment, balance is similar to Misbah. Being tall he can swing through even slightly short of a length ball due to his reach.

Same way Shaheen Shah swung through the line to hit a massive six. Tall guys love hitting sixes in OZ. Finn Allen showed. They can get top of the bounce better

You need a long reach to counter the bounce. That’s why Ifthikar also successful. Yesterday Stoinis was hitting 6’s with brute power.

Pandya too has done very well in LOIs here last series were he was the mvp.

Even Ashwin as a batsman has done well. What about Sundar who hit one of the most important six in Australia before this Kohli's six. A tall guy. He got top of Cummins bouncer and swivel pulled him for six at the Gabba.

Sorta worked

England is at the bottom both in total sixes and also six per ball. wow. This was the template team for all before the world T20.
