Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said the Centre would support iPhone-maker Apple to set up a manufacturing unit in the country and is awaiting a formal proposal from them. “Let us get a good proposal from them...we will be very happy to receive Apple, one of the top brands in the world. We are willing to find out if there is any difficulty they may face. We will be more than happy to resolve that difficulty.

“So we will await a formal proposal,” Mr. Prabhu said.

He also said that the Centre was willing to call all State Chief Ministers who are willing to give them the best deal. Apple has asked for certain concessions for setting up a manufacturing unit in the country.

The government had sought investment and job creation details from the iPhone-maker to facilitate setting up its proposed manufacturing facility in India.

In March, the then Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government had not accepted ‘most of the demands’ of the company.

Any possibilities of the prices being slashed if it's a success?

No.. Iphone sells for the same amount in China as is rest of the world (plus additional country charges etc) even though the Iphones are manufactured in China itself.

So if some of the manufacturing is shifted to India do not expect the prices to be slashed worldwide or even in India. The only reason Apple is looking to move manufacturing base is to increase profitability.

Thanks a lot for the info. It's their price that annoys a lot of people including me. I'll definitely keep an android device with me but I was thinking of getting an iPhone as well. Rs. 89,000 (64 GB) for the iPhone X is just too much for me to handle.

I'd wager this goes to Tamil Nadu. They seem to have good success in attracting MNCs to set-up manufacturing plants there: Nokia, Hyundai, Ford, etc. etc.

On another note, those vanity girls who flaunt their Apple products will likely be delighted if this were to come to pass.

Why? Won't the prices remain the same?

That's good more jobs always welcomed.. Let's see if this succeeds or not hopefully states like U.P./Bihar can offer good deal to these MNC's to set up plants in these states, they really need it.

UP and Bihar? You really believe Apple will be willing to set up their plant there?

Thats why people voted for Nitish Kumar and Yogi right? To bring in more jobs ofcourse the image of these states is pretty sad but that's what the government should do change the image.. If state government can provide good deal then why wouldn't apple prefer these states? You do realise Noida falls in U.P. and is one of the most developed cities of India? The circle rates for land is probably one of the highest in India excluding Mumbai/Delhi.. And it offers better infrastructure at a cheaper price than Delhi/Mumbai..

Similarly I would think in Bihar Patna would be developed? Haven't been there so can't comment..

Bhai we are talking about Apple not Pan Parag or Shakti Bhog Atta. :inti

Apple will change its name to Eppel.

Lol Bhai log i am not talking about places like Baliya, Azamgarh, mau etc but places like Noida, Greater noida, Lucknow, Patna which already have many top notch global giants.. People automatically think of bad places of U.P. And Bihar but there are some places which are probably in top 10 Indian cities..

And slowly once you gain trust of enough MNC's you can start developing other cities of the state as well..

The cities I mentioned are better than most cities of better states in terms of infra, electricity, global presence, airport availability etc..

Also I wouldn't mind pan Parag and Shakti bhog Atta factories as well unless UP/Bihar develops India can't develop unless they break the Hindi belt into more parts that is the unfortunate truth..

Karnataka, TN seem to be ideal locations. But given the present situation, one of the Andhra states could snatch it unless modibhai sends it to his favourite Gujarat .
Hitman Weren't the Iphone SE's already being assembled here ? Why do we need an actual R&D centre here, because manufacturing/assembling is way more likely to provide much bigger number of jobs.

These regions have huge untapped talent , we need more industries which can create jobs in these states . I hope it happens .
