BCCI and players will follow government's decision on IND vs PAK: Sunil Gavaskar
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has urged fans and critics not to target the players as they prepare for their next big assignment, the Asia Cup 2025, which begins on September 9.
Questions have been raised about whether India should have skipped the tournament altogether in light of ongoing tensions with Pakistan. Matches between the two nations have been restricted to ICC events or continental competitions like the Asia Cup. The backlash intensified after confirmation that India would participate despite heightened cross-border tensions following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of several tourists.
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar stressed that the players have no say in these decisions and simply follow directives from the BCCI and the Indian government.
“If the government has taken a call, I don’t see how the players can be criticised or commented upon, because the players at the end of the day are contracted to the BCCI and they will be taking the instructions from the government of India. And so it entirely depends on that,” Gavaskar said.
“The players are helpless in this. They’ve been selected to play in the Asia Cup, and if the government says you have to play, then they will go out and play. If the government says you don’t, then the BCCI will act accordingly,” he added.
On whether India could still pull out of their clash against Pakistan or even the tournament, Gavaskar did not rule it out, again underlining that the final decision rests with the government.
“Like I said, it is entirely up to the government of India to tell the BCCI what to do,” he remarked.
Turning his focus to cricketing matters, Gavaskar praised the squad selected for the tournament, describing it as one of India’s strongest in recent years.
“This is a fabulous squad. It has depth in batting, variety in the left and right-hand combinations, and terrific balance in bowling as well. It’s a fantastic team,” he concluded.
India will open their campaign against hosts United Arab Emirates on September 10.
Sunil Gavaskar believes that the players should not be criticised for their participation at the Asia Cup and highlights that they are only following the directives of the BCCI which are given the green light by the Indian government.
