Will Pakistan's good performance against England put extra pressure on India?

I didn't expect Pakistan to win the first test against England convincingly. Being a young and inexperienced team and playing against England's best bowlers in England is not a joke. However I think this will put extra pressure on India because we are number 1 ranked team and are also experienced.

This will be like that one day series in South Africa where Pakistan beat South Africa and we immediately toured South Africa after them but lost that series.

If india prepare the way pakistan have arrive as soon as possible before 1st test then i don.t think beating eng will be problem

India will be in England for months before the first test so definitely preparation and acclimatisation isn't an issue

India always gets battered in their away tours. Expect them to have extra pressure.

Our preparations were key to this result. We were battle hardened by our competitive FC matches before this match - the Ireland Test especially. India haven't prepared well for their previous big away tours against the likes of SA and England. Yes there's scheduling pressures but you have to make the time.

I know they're playing one day matches before the Test, but I don't know if they're playing any red ball games before the first Test. Its important they play at least two 4 day games against sides of a competitive standard.

The bowlers need to get the Dukes ball in their hand and adjust their lengths from what they usually bowl in SC. Batsmen need to adjust to the swing and seam.

I don't think anyone expected Pak to win this comfortably.

In the end, it's all about getting 20 wickets. Pak bowlers (especially Shadab) have exceeded all expectations. Can Indian Chinaman bowler do the same? I don't expect much from Indian pacers tho.

Test and ODIs are different ball games.

Than there is no excuse there bowlers have to step up and batsmen too

Things are not looking good for India because of Kohli's injury. Thanks to useless IPL. When your captain isn't 100% fit and is skipping the county stint due to that its discouraging.

Extra pressure will be there no doubt.

Pakistan have obviously fared better than India home or away as far as against England is concerned.

India should be licking their lips after getting pasted in previous visits.

England will improve and India will need to bowl as well as Pakistan have in the first test. India will make enough runs but their bowling is still in question.

However if India lost the series it will be a disaster for them.

No extra pressure on team India.

But pressure will be there on us Indian fans as it will be used by Pak fans as a weapon on discrediting India’s no.1 status. :))

Indians care more about the series against Australia I think. There is a realistic chance of winning down under for the first time ever.

No shortage of skill in the IND camp, just a question of preparation, tactics and how well ENG respond after the PAK series.

If Pak win 2-0, England(I believe) will drop to 7th. If England then beat India , no more no.1 I assume? So there will be nothing to discredit. :inti

If we lose against this English team, I hope we also lose the number 1 ranking. At least I won't respect Kohli and friends if that happens. I don't think Pakistan's show will put extra pressure on us, at that level professionals try to improve/maximize their own performances rather than bothering about other teams.

No, Indians will play a different series and result can be different.

India are the number one ranked team, they have nothing to prove. Pakistan appears to have the wood over England for some reason, looks like we are their bogey team.

However, this series is a glorified warmup for England and if they beat India, this loss against Pakistan will be quickly forgotten.

Pakistan win against Ireland paved way to the victory against Eng. Even if Irish are new to the test arena, they knew there conditions better than Pak inexperienced team. That win gave Pak confidence and taught lesson how to bat and bowl in early summer.

In my opinion, Pak took calculated risk of playing test in early summer against Ireland where a loss would though hurt Pak rep as a top tier test team but give a good practice against Eng.

India fought well in SA and is a good team but if they don't win the first test, they will lose the series again - that is my prediction. Eng may be down in confidence now but they will be battle hardened against a very disciplined Pak side - however oxymoron it may sound .

I don't know about the Indian team, but PP will be a very hostile place for all Indians specially the chest-thumping kind if India loses.

It's because they are the number 1 team they have something to prove, especially after SA series defeat. They got to number 1 by having a long home season, so if anyone has to prove anything it's India.

I am expecting B.Kumar to play the role of M.Abass. I think lets not forget what kumar, shami and bumrah did against SA who are a pretty better team than england. Secondly they need to bring woakes back. strengthens batting and india get troubled by swing rather than pace.

No team is invincible these days. The key is to be dominant at home and competitive away, and that is what India has done better than others.

Barring the one Test vs Australia, they have been merciless at home and they have shown character away as well. They were very good in SA and could have won the series 2-1 had Kohli won two tosses instead of du Plessis.

Overall, they are the best Test side at the moment. However, that does not mean that they are unbeatable.

As usual you are trying to provoke some impatient Pakistani posters here and if that gives you pleasure then I will not spoil your party.

But if you honestly think England is taking this as a warm up series for India series you are mistaken and I don’t know if you have seen the reactions in England after this defeat. They are a proud Test team and will never take a Test defeat at Lord’s in May lightly, and that too against a subcontinent team.

And let’s assume they forget this defeat but that stats will never be forgotton and the Pakistani fans will never forget this victory. So how England actually treat this humuliation is irrelevant.

It will definitely put extra pressure on, but they should still win. England's batting looks flakey but I suppose it depends if Indian seamers can put them under the same pressure Pakistan bowlers did.

No it isn't - Michael Vaughan himself said on Twitter and during interviews that after the Ashes, he along with the English public generally enjoy watching Pakistan play in England the most.

Coming from someone who is based in UK, I can also confirm this to be true among the English cricket fans. They prefer watching Pakistan rather than India. In Australia it is the opposite among the Aussie fans for obvious reasons.

Please don't make uninformed statements like this when you don't know what you're talking about. I do agree that if England do beat India it will be forgotten because that is a 5 match series against a number 1 ranked side but don't make things up like "glorified warmup" because this is simply not the case.

You misunderstood. The English public obviously cares about a Test series with Pakistan. This is a series with great history, and a lot of people were looking forward to Pakistan touring again after 2016. In 2020, we will play three Tests again.

9 Tests in 4 years clearly shows that a Pakistan tour to England is a big deal. However, my point is that irrespective of what the outcome of this series is, the India Test series will overshadow it due two main reasons: India are a much more high profile team and also happen to be number one, and it is a five Test match series.

If given a choice between the two, England would obviously prefer to win the Indian series. These two Tests are little more than warmups for the ECB to find the right playing XI and combinations for the India series. Of course, it does not mean that they do not care about winning and are not upset that they lost. Losing a home Test series is not something that any team looks forward to.

I don't really see India losing to this England team unless Kohli loses his form and Root starts converting his 50s.

Another factor that favored Pakistan is that they have faced English bowlers numerous times in the last 3-4 years. India will be visiting England after a long time so their batsmen may need some time to adjust in those conditions.

If India prepare better for their series, I don't see them losing.

Obviously it will because if a #7 ranked team can beat England in their own backyard atleast once, why not the #1 ranked team?

India have had the superior bowling attack and batting lineup in the last two years compared to Pakistan.

I predict a 3-2 series win for the Men in Blue because India will come good at Lords and the Oval which are flat and aid reverse swing while the Rose Bowl is a great ground for batting where in 2014, over 1200 runs were scored.

They will most likely wither away at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston in the 2nd innings under seam-friendly conditions.

Overall, I’m hoping Moeen Ali comes back to form with both bat and ball and hope the series will live up to the hype.

ofc pressure, Whatever Pakistan can do, India should be able to do it better

See the thing is and I don't want to offend anyone but the thing is pak tour of England is short like really short and they did get acclimatized by sending players to county and arriving early, 2 test match series is always like a lottery, remember how Lanka defeated England I am not anything away from pak for its performance but a 2 match series is completely different from a proper full fledged tour where their are 3 series of which test is a 5 match series which in itself is quite demanding.

And besides this series is not over yet, I expect England to bounce back hard in next match so pak has to be careful

I am not sure about the pressure but the expectation will raised for sure. Every one will be expecting India to win this series now.

Beside it was quite bizarre honestly of root to bat first in green top.

We drew with the English in 2016 as well so if you're making it look like this series is a lottery then at least India should draw the series (if not win it) based on the result we achieved 2 years ago which was a 4 match test series.

You guys got one of the most flattish conditions not taking away anything but if I am not wrong yasir shah took loads of wickets there.

Pak can never win on a sporting track, never! It is a nature's curse on the other teams - as soon as Pak is done bowling, the lightning strikes and the pitch turns brown.

Pakistan’s victory or loss would not have added any extra pressure on India.. Indian cricket team is expected to win regardless of Pakistan’s performance and anything less than a win over England will be embarrassing.. I don’t think the players have obsession about Pakistan and I don’t believe apart from hardcore fans anyone else knows or cares about Pakistan’s win over England..

So to answer the question in OP - NO

No. I don’t think so. You don’t become a number one team by worrying about other team's results. With all respect to England, a series win for India is long overdue much like a win in the windies was long overdue for Pakistan.
There’s only pressure on England in this equation and no one else

I think, even a possible 2-0 loss for PAK doesn’t release pressure (on IND). They are not competing with PAK, rather their own status (ranking).

We might not agree, but ranking system is flawed, which every cricket player knows - unless Home & Away is factored, these rankings are just indicative numbers. Cricket is a game, where condition dominates the outcome more than any other sport. I don’t know what was their highest ranking point but that’s immaterial - that WIN (AUS as well) side at one point hold 5x2 rubbers.

After such domination, if IND doesn’t win a 5 Test series at the 2nd half of summer against this ENG side - that ranking position just becomes academic & Indian players do know that.

I doubt the team cares, the Indian media will just use it to create the illusion of additional pressure

I am not sure about the pressure but the expectation will raised for sure. Every one will be expecting India to win this series now.

Lol, when everyone expects you to win, it’s mostly then the preassure will be on you...

Oh Bhai it's not about being khisiani Billi, the thread was made will pak Victory put pressure on India that in it self is a khisiani statement, paks performing in England is irrelevant for Indian team, when pak was getting whitewashed in South Africa and Australia and India performed their decently did it pressure on ur team no, so why should it put pressure on team, all I want is my team to put a fight in each match and play well the results will take care of itself.

Pakistan got a balanced team so they won. India rely heavily on Kholi, he goes, team usually falls. Indian pacers also lack the x factor. The glorified ranking of #1 team is by playing at home. They are a really strong ODI side, but not Test.

I don't see India winning even a single test match when they visit England. Bowling not as good as Pak's and batting heavily reliant on top order.

Half of India/Indian audience didn’t even know about this test series at all...dattoo its not 5match series to have a comparison with india’s result...sooo if there is no pressure/expectations from fans then believe Indian team doesn’t get any pressure regarding pak’s success...the only pressure Indian team faces would be to keep holding on to #1 ranking...

Even in 2014 when SL won the two match series before india’s one...none of the fans/analysts bashed Indian team for their loss by comparing with SL series but the bashing they received was only because of their incompetence..believe it would be same this time as well

India will be in England for months before the first test so definitely preparation and acclimatisation isn't an issue
But do the multi millionaires have the same hunger and desire to do well in test cricket overseas as they do in IPL. Wouldnt the players be tired as well?

I’m afraid yet more negativity and pessimistic nonsense.

1. India have nothing to prove? Lol. They have everything to prove. Their away record against big teams has been poor and they regularly get dismantled in England. I would suggest they are desperate to prove their mettle in England and prove that their players can perform away from India.

2. Bogey team ? Really? Is that your cricketing analysis or the only excuse you can think off to negate Pakistan’s performance?

3. Glorified warmup - Someone forgot to tell the paying public who shelled out good money and sold out 3 days in a row expecting to see a proper test match not a warmup. I guess this match doesn’t reflect on their records and points totals either? And the stick they are getting in the press and fans is unwarranted as it’s a mere warmup?

Come on bro - sort your act out. Your posts are reflecting real badly on you as a person.

I don't think this series really affects India. Whether we win 2-0 or would have lost 2-0 , India are playing England, not Pakistan.

all I want is my team to put a fight in each match and play well the results will take care of itself.

Same old garbage and loser attitude of some fans that 'I want my team to put up a fight'. This statement looked good when Kohli and others were touring Eng, Aus and Africa for the first time because they were inexperienced. Now these guys are touring England as the number 1 ranked team. It's high team we start winning a series in Eng, Aus and South Africa and justify our ranking.

But do the multi millionaires have the same hunger and desire to do well in test cricket overseas as they do in IPL. Wouldnt the players be tired as well?

One of our multi millionaire who is also our captain got injured playing in a useless pyjama league match and now he is not fit to play for Surrey.

I agree with MMHS. India's pressure will be to prove they are number 1 test team. This Pom team is beatable. Whilst Indian team is in their peak and have most basis covered . Yet they still can't win away from home!!!

Indians care more about the series against Australia I think. There is a realistic chance of winning down under for the first time ever.

Yeah, typical, why care to improve on the two 4-0 losses when we can try and win against a totally depleted team like Aussies with 2 of their main batsmen including the skipper missing!

Lottery win by 9 wickets, yep, that does make sense...why is it that India in their last two tours could not even win one lottery test, if we go by the same kind of logic?

Maybe India likes to play the gracious guests and gift away all the tests :-P

1. India have been the number one ranked team for a number of years now, and have won a series against every team in this period. They do not have to validate their rankings to PPers who only care about away record.

No team is invincible, and the best teams are those who are dominant at home and competitive away. India are by far the best team not only at home, but in Asian conditions overall.

In South Africa, they played very well and that series could have easily gone their way with a bit of luck. The conditions for batting were awful, and on all three occasions, the team chasing in the fourth innings lost by a hefty margin.

du Plessis was lucky to win two tosses and bat first. It is not a coincidence that the only time he lost the toss, his team got thrashed.

India fully deserve their number one ranking and no team has a stronger claim to the Mace, and that is why they have nothing prove.

2. Pakistan tends to raise their game against England while England tends to lower their game against Pakistan.

England thrashed South Africa at home last summer, the same South Africa won in Australia but we got thrashed in Australia, and the same South Africa would probably trash us in South Africa later this year.

We continue to be pathetic in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, but we have raised our game in England in this decade.

Pakistan have done poorly against weaker teams than England, and England have done well against stronger teams than Pakistan. It is pretty clear that we have had their number.

3. It is a glorified warmup in the sense that regardless of what happens in this series, the highlight of the summer is going to be the five Test series against the number one ranked team.

The 2018 English summer will be remembered for the tour of India, and not the two Tests that the seventh ranked Pakistan played.

It is quite reminiscent to the 2016 English summer, where a low ranked Sri Lanka played two Tests in May, before the high ranked Pakistan played a four Test series.

England blanked Sri Lanka, but they drew 2-2 vs Pakistan, and that defined their summer. No one cared about the series win vs Sri Lanka, since it was little more than a glorified warmup to the main event of the summer - the four Tests vs Pakistan.

England would certainly have preferred to win the series vs Pakistan.

Whatever the outcome of this series, the result of the Indian series will overshadow the Pakistan series, which is essentially an appetizer before the main course.

Fair enough. Prediction for the England v India series?

It is too tough to call. All three results are equally likely in my view, England will come hard against India but India will not roll over like 2014.

However, if I were to put my money at stake, I would go for a narrow 2-1 to India.

Actually India did win 1 test last time if you account the first 2 tests in 2014 in case you forget it's the next 3 they faltered. Tabhi kehta hu badam khaya Kr yadasshat tez hogi.

I guess we are so used to India being blanked out there in England, it can be dismissed as an honest mistake :-)

Must have been a lottery win as well I guess

Lol. So you have been watching cricket since 2008? Btw you are talking as if your team has won multiple series in last 2 decades in England.:)) educate yourself, tally is big ZERO, last time your team won a series was in 90s. We won a series in England, just 11 yrs ago.

Really? More nonsense. Please stop all this. Why do you do this? I know you are deliberately trying to annoy us but you are coming across desperate in your attempts to find flaws.

England has had a greater history of antagonism and rivalry (cricketing rivalry not monetory) with Pakistan. Yet you actually think England lowers their game against Pakistan?

Brother - I am going to try and stop replying to you. I'm fasting and I don't want to come across antagonistic over sport. But please stop this behavior. It's childish.

Also talking about getting blanked away from home, Do you know how many times your team got blanked in Aus in recent times? FOUR times in last 2 decades.:))

Even if Pakistan had lost or not even toured pressure would have been on India anyway since they are the number one ranked side and they have only won at home. They lost to SA away and losing to England away will confirm that India is just number one because they played and won at home more than any other side. It is imperative for India to atleast draw the series. Not sure if they will lose their number one status if they lose/draw series.

Aren't you the same guy who was making fun of PSL because Ronchi was the top scorer. Well your ipl had Shane Watson a retired player dominating the tournament when he couldn't really score too much in PSL. Did SL win in Eng came just before Indian tour few years back? I don't remember anyone linking those two series.

what a response to my post about test series away from home.

so you also agree that batting star Monroe who thrashed your team in NZ recently was sitting duck in IPL so IPL bowling is better than your Pak team bowling? Your heroes like Sanga, Pieterson, Sammy, etc didn't even get a chance to play in IPL, all were commentating? what do you have to say for that?

one of your stars Duminy here warming the bench, did not do that well whenever he got chances?
one of your PSL captains mccullam, playing every single game while failing in PSL was sitting on the bench in IPL most of the times.. any comment on that?

Watson as a T20 player is way better than unknown player like Ronchi and Also who can forget the great batsman Kamran who is an international failure but top player in PSL?

apart from all of these, how are you so sure that players like Watson, Russel, Narine gave their 100% in PSL right before all important tournament where they got 100 times more money than peanuts they received in PSL?

Let’s look at Munro’s scores in the PAK tour.

58 (35), 0 (2), 8 (4), 56 (42), 34 (24) in the ODI series.

156 runs at an average of 31.2.

49 (43), 1 (2) in the T20 series.

50 runs at an average of 25.

So if that is you’re definition of “destroyed” you need to raise your expectations.

And it’s Munro not Monroe.

Anderson will have to continue his dominance over Kohli

There's two ways to go about this

1. India takes pressure, due to Pakistan winning.
2. India becomes more confident as England are mentally down and out.

50 runs at an average of 25.

So if that is you’re definition of “destroyed” you need to raise your expectations.

And it’s Munro not Monroe.

He is a slow learner but will come around, you already taught him how to properly spell Munro's name but it is taking him time to absorb so much information all at once lol

Grammar is fine and even I wrote “you’re” because of the auto-correct.

The biased observations are really annoying.

Aren't you the same guy who was making fun of PSL because Ronchi was the top scorer. Well your ipl had Shane Watson a retired player dominating the tournament when he couldn't really score too much in PSL. Syed1 babajee Usman Chadda.....Look at this genius.
Think before talking Watson is a level above ronchi 9i mean there isn't even a competition, and besides who are the top 3 batters of this season Kane, pant and Rahul, if you want to make fun of someone atleast do a bit of research, otherwise makes u look foolish.
