What's new

Will the broadcasting of PSL in India on SONY increase its viewership and following?

Yeah Indians would be falling over each other to watch Multan v/s Quetta matches :))

Not trying to be arrogant like some of my fellow indian fans like joshila here are but saying things like nobody watches Pakistan's Pjyama League in India is quite funny. These are the same fans who talk about demand and supply and how channels are willing to pay so much money to have IPL on their channel. Why will a big and reputed channel like Sony invest in a league like PSL without any demand and viewership data? May be they are targeting muslim population of India which isn't that small? :inti

India is a very good market for cricket....PSL will attract many fans....as they might miss watching due
To no bilateral ties......eg. Babar Azam.... Amir....Hasan and Haider Ali......Faf n others......

Yeah if Sony promotes it well, it will lead to an increase. DSPORT was ok, but most people didnt even pay attention because it had nothing else going on it. Sony is massive in comparison because it has Serie A, WWE, FA Cup and UCL as well, which means it already has decent subscribers. And people in India will watch any cricket tbh.

Of course. Even if only a small fraction watches it, the numbers will be huge, bigger than viewership in all countries apart from Pakistan and maybe Bangladesh, latter I am including since I think some top Bangladeshi stars play PSL.

Mostly Indians stay away from CPL, Big Bash because of timings, PSL has the unique advantage that matches will start late evening after most of us come back home from work.

DSport was awful, SONY is a different beast. If we have fantasy games like Dream11, My11 even better, since many casual fans too may follow the league somewhat.

Pretty much this..the timing is a huge plus for PSL

Passive viewing even if to troll would create huge revenues.. one needs to remember Indians watch cricket a lot, we got dedicated channels for cricket.

People in India watch the Zambian league for Dream11. You would be surprised if you think there wont be viewership for this.

Absolutely.
Sony TV is a popular name in India, actually i never knew that PSL was being televised in India before this.
DSport? I didn't even know that we had a channel by this name.

We are the kind of audience who can watch afghanistan league let alone Pakistan.

Where were you when this happened lol? :inti

Pakistan Super League 2019 telecast banned in India (Posted in Feb 2019)

It was in every news channel and every bhakht knew which channel was showing DSports(now Eurosports).

That is why I said some fans are arrogant here. They know these things but still act like they are unaware of these because their ego won't let them accept that. :inti

Make no mistake, Indians will watch anything named cricket. Add Pakistani glitz and you have a winner. I expect PSL to be a massive success and attract good fan following like BBL and CPL in India. We should also try and get some sponsors from these Indian companies but probably that’s something for next year! I can see a huge upward swing from here!

Quoting you because of the GIF.

But on a relevant note, how do people in IND consume IPL so easily? I still remember trying to watch it in 2008/09 (whatever was the first season) and getting browned off one game into it.

Just so commoditised that I fail to understand how IND does not get board and saturated of consuming the same homogeneous content. God knows the novelty factor wears off a few “fit sponsor name” sixes/maximums into the game.

Full disclosure, I do not really watch the PSL or any L for that matter. Cursory involvement in T20I is limited to PAK progressing to knock-outs or my being on holiday.

Of course. India’s cricket audience is massive. I’ve noticed mom and pop stores, restaurants, etc. play BPL on their TVs. Surely they can play PSL too. Also some t20 fans have appetite for multiple leagues.

Will it increase the following significantly? I doubt. India already has IPL and no other league, including Big Bash is hugely popular there.

Home series too? It's going to be tough for Sony to handle their scheduling now.

They already have...

Australian home games + BBL
England home games + T20 Blast + RL cup
West Indies home games
Sri Lankan home games + LPL
Zimbabwe+Ireland home games

And then all these other leagues like T10, GT20 Canada, Mzansi League....

Doesn't SONY have multiple channels though? Shouldn't be hard to handle considering different scheduling dates of most of these things. I'm sure this was their plan all along --to broadcast as much cricket as possible--considering Star has rights to both IPL and India's home series. This is the only way they can get some eye-balls.

Most Indians watch IPL as time pass in the evenings. Very few are actually hardcore supporters of any franchise. Many will do the same for PSL. Get to see new upcoming players as well

Also Sony telecast will result in good viewership given its wider reach & broadcast reputation. Frankly very few in India knew about Dsport

Very bad cricket so far. No one would watch teams scoring 130sh scores. Might lose viewers and eventually sponsors and hence the broadcasters too.

I am watching on and off. Wanted to see Haider and Imam bat. Would try to catch up next match of Zalmi.
Bowling looks good.

So will Sony TV (and their deep pockets) somehow influence resumption of cricketing ties between India & Pakistan?

Watched last few overs today, Gregory killed the excitement in one over of Sohail...

Afridi is still playing and he looks ok... Can't believe this guy....

Faheem Ashraf looked v good while batting....

I have spread the word among my friends who didn't know about PSL being live on Sony Six....

I think in another few days a lor more indians will get to know that it's on and will watch it...

I dont see any reason why it can’t be a time pass watch for Indians like IPL and BBL are for me.

What? Lol their deep pockets aren’t deep enough compared to Star sports( add Disney too that as well). Sony or Star won’t have any say on bilateral matters as it is done by Government of India.

I have been catching the 5 min short highlights on youtube and that is enough for me.

Don't have interest to watch full matches of any league ( including IPL).

Overall, the standard have been decent but not great. No standout performer so far in first 3 matches.

I am sure Karachi matches will have some good viewership in India. They will be interested to see Babar Azam bat.
I think Amir has also got a good name in India.

Indians love their cricket and I'm sure they'll watch it IF the standard of cricket is decent and the broadcast is professional.

At the moment the PSL is amateur in terms of broadcast - from the studio presentation, to the commentary, to post match presentations and post match analysis. Huge improvements are needed.

Exactly. I do like to watch cricket domestic or international from any country. It doesn't matter if its comes from Pakistan or any other country. What matters is competitiveness and standard of cricket.

One thing I don't like about PSL is! 6 teams play for the championship in double round robin league (teams play against each other twice), to get into top 4 and qualify for playoffs. It some times feels like you have to just avoid being bottom two. In spite of use of playoffs which rewards teams standing in the league, it somewhat feels less competitive and less rewarding for top performing teams.

For a such small pool of teams, the League should have Best of Three finals rather than play-offs or semifinals. It will reward the two top performing teams and make the league more competitive.

Inspite of this I will watch PSL, because standard of cricket is good.

I don't even watch the highlights I'll probably watch the final or crucial playoffs provided Lahore is in it

Same goes for Pak int t20
But watch test/odi highlights if I have time I'll probably watch the match (if Pak is doing good :) )

Don't think it will attract much of a viwership.......bcoz Ind Eng tests and t20s to start followed by India tour to England ....Srilanka...... Also quality of PSL will not allow to permanent viwership.....temporary on Sundays or during evening for few minutes is what one can expect.....it is batting which attract audience and unfortunately .... I myself was feeling bored watching the Multan batting yesterday.......so lot of work need to do batting wise

Really really poor Cricket soo far .
Pathetic display of batting bits & pieces players in every team just look at the islamabad middle order i mean even a 6 year old kid can predict Asif ali giving a catching practice to the mid on it's really getting disgusting to watch this guy bat now.
Need some big overhaul in the batting department from every team . Period

I didn't know it was on, but will watch a game for a bit, casual.

Doubt I'll follow it. But then even IPL I watch on and off.
