A recent covid strain B.1.1.529 has been discovered in South Africa that is spreading faster than the beta and even the delta strains. The Dutch have abandoned their ODI tour of South Africa and left the country mid way. India were expected to leave India for South Africa on December 8, and tour the country for 3 Tests, 3 ODIs and 4 T20Is when the fourth wave of the pandemic is expected to hit its peak in South Africa. This has put the tour in jeopardy and the tour will likely be cancelled.

In the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, the BCCI rested five first team players in Rohit, Kohli, Pant, Bumrah and Shami, most definitely in an effort to keep them fresh for the upcoming overseas Test series against South Africa. That was always a short sighted policy to begin with, given New Zealand are the top ranked test team in the world and are the reigning world test champions.

But the recent developments have just made it even more short sighted. We could have an embarrassing situation where India are drawing the series or potentially even losing it, and losing valuable WTC points, but guys like Rohit, Pant, Bumrah and Shami sitting on their sofas at home and watching the series, being rested for a series that's not going to take place.

Never quite understood why India had to play Pant and Sharma during the stupid T20 series that preceded the test matches.

Both the scheduling and the selection policy is horrendous, the fact that the BCCI only gave two tests to New Zealand is appalling in itself.

it's a bit insulting to New Zealand, who recently beat them for the WTC trophy. Are they saying they value a win against South Africa over the champions?

I think the thought process was that beating any side at home wouldn't require a full strength side (an arrogant assumption it might be) and so they rested players for an overseas tour in SENA conditions.

True, and prob is the thought process.

But I see it as the opposite. Potentially losing a home series to a SENA team has to be much more embarrassing than losing in an overseas tour in SENA conditions

Seems India done well with this side too!

Bowling is alright. But, with both Pujara and Rahane not in good form, our batting looks brittle. If we can't bat well on the 4th day, we face a rare home defeat.

The players were already tired . Current team is also doing well .It would be good platform for youngsters . Look at Bharat . He also was good . Everyone grabbing the opportunity. Shreyas already scored a century . I believe Ind should win this test

Kanpur pitch is raging turner on Day 4 / 5

Will be easy win for India. Plus players are human. They need rest. Remember they were in bubble since June to Nov ( 5 months )

Do you realize these guys spent 5 months in bubble ?

Which bubble you are referring to? There was no bubble in UK where the players were in summer. They were all roaming around, enjoying British summer and were flaunting in instagram.

In England they got a few days bubble break - the gap between the WTC finals and England series but had to quarantine again and get back to bubble before test series started

There was no strict bio bubble as it is not required any longer as per law in UK. Only when they arrived from India in June, they had to quarantine. After that they were all free. Likes of Rishab Pant were watching Euros, Mayank was enjoying in Brighton beach, Shastri and Kohli was doing book launch etc.

They only had to quarantine again in UAE for 3 days before IPL.

Dunno about others but can Kohli please stay away from the squad in Mumbai? Unfair to barge in mid-way during a series and take away captaincy role.

Moreover this individual has such a negative aura in the team environment, youngsters can never flourish under a toxic, rudderless, impatient, stupid leader like him. Moreover Kohli adds no value with the bat, will only make a joke of himself against these no-name spinners from NZ.

Iyer did so well in the middle order, hope he isn't made the sacrificial goat to accommodate a non-playing useless captain like Kohli. Even if Pujara, Rahane fail they don't spoil the team spirit, they don't scare away juniors.

In fact Indian cricket will do so much better in the absence of Kohli even as a player. Australia tour showed the way forward.

Anyone who is saying these spoilt brats like Bumrah, Kohli, Pant and Rohit are too tired to play the premier format of the game for their country are living in fool's paradise.

If they are that tired, they should skip IPL. If BCCI forces them to play it, they should go public and call BCCI's bluff. After all, BCCI has already jeopardized so many of our world trophy campaigns with their mindless scheduling and greed.

Speaking of Kohli, what has he done during the entire year to warrant rest? He has been most miserable with the bat entire year.

Spare a thought for Ashwin who has been in bubble life since IPL held in India. Immediately flew to Eng for WTC F, stayed there for the entirety of the Eng series, UAE IPL, T20 WC, NZ T20s and now this test series. Only guy who has been in bubble for so long, uninterrupted. He also had to deal with family problems when his father, wife, in-laws, both children all were down with COVID. Then the farce in Eng series which must have been so frustrating, all the insults despite his MoS against Eng and heroics in Aus.

That shows his commitment, not a natural athlete but a big heart. After having achieved so much still the drive to play for his country. Contrast that to the likes of Pant and Rohit who played the useless T20 series after the WC but sat out of such an important series against WTC champs and world number one ranked side. Even Bumrah is a disappointment, he is given sufficient rest by BCCI throughout the year, for example he didn't play the full test series against Eng at home and missed the T20s/ODIs because of his wedding. Watch how Cummins doesn't mind skipping IPL but is always available to play for his country in all formats, a guy who had to deal with a career threatening injury unlike Bumrah.
