Will the T20 format wipe out Tests and ODIs in the long run?

For all the talk about dying test cricket, dying ODI cricket because of the advent and popularity of T20 cricket . . I notice that there aren't a lot of steps being taken to tackle the elephant in the room! T20 cricket! You can look at the periphery of T20 cricket (unfortunately that's Test cricket and ODI cricket) and try to improve it whichever way you like (Test championship, ODI league), the fact remains . . that T20 cricket remains the elephant in the room! Now as a purist, personally, I don't like T20 cricket . . but I understand it is important for the games development, for players financial security and so on . . so I have accepted the fact that T20 cricket is reality! However, how much damage are we as "fans" willing to take to test cricket and ODI cricket at the expense of T20 cricket? I for one am certain, that you can do whatever to add "context" to test cricket or ODI cricket . . till you sort out what you want to do with T20 cricket . . the international game will suffer and we will continue to be in a downward spiral . .

It is sad to see players like AB divilliers, Brendom McCullum, etc. retiring so early when they still have a lot to offer . . But can you really blame them? Go play league cricket, but you won't become ABD or Brendon by playing T20 cricket/league cricket . .

Money talks!

Absolutely ridiculous for Pakistan to just have played 10 ODIs since its champions trophy victory 1 year ago! As opposed to so many pointless T20 internationals . . Also worth noting that in the FTP pakistan released, 5 out of 6 series are 2 test series! HOw can that be allowed? I thought we talked about adding context . . It is a travesty of the highest order . . Look at England playing a 5 match ODI series against a weak Australian team where they could have played a 3rd test match against Pakistan (I bet in front of a sell out crowd on most days)

But guess what? Money talks!

I maintain, that T20 internationals need to be dismissed at the international level with only the world cup remaining . . similar to how it is in football! Allot a window to the leagues (Say 4 months . . 2 in the winter [Australian summer, UAE, etc] and 2 in the summer [IPL, England, etc] and ask players to play league T20 cricket . . every 3/4 years, have a T20 international world cup . . Keep international cricket to ODI and Test cricket . . Remaining 8 months of the year, all teams can play international cricket thats meaningful . . and not distracted! Set up a mechanism where the ICC is making money from these t20 leagues . . and investing in test cricket . .

This is a rather controversial topic and I am aware, one that divides opinion! Would love to hear the thoughts of people on this forum . .

I love all 3 formats. You can say what you want about which one to get rid of but, For more than a decade now all 3 forms are being played Internationally, All 3 forms are currently doing well. Neither of Test, ODI or T20I cricket is dead and I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys all 3 and believes all 3 can be played Internationally with ease.

I love all 3 formats. I don't think any format needs to be dropped.

Nothing should change, people are just bitter of the fact that T20's are exciting to watch. If the other two formats are thrown away then cricket's popularity would drop drastically. ODI's are my favourite format.

Get rid of this Phateechar T20I cricket, only T20IWC shud be played, no bilateral or tri-lateral T20I games

Agree with this. there is no point playing T20I having these many domestic leagues.

Leagues should be organised every alternate years.
Don't know how people of my country find ipl so entertaining.

I think Tests will survive but they will be overhauled unfortunately

I hope so! I can easily live with only T20 cricket, the other 2 formats are too long and boring, especially test cricket. ODIs have become more tedious over time due to the difference in quality usually meaning there are very few upsets and run scoring on poor pitches becomes boring when players can just keep hitting for hours without any real pressure. Test cricket just feels very antiquated in the modern world. Teams batting for days without anything interesting happening. T20 cricket finds the perfect balance of attacking cricket and shortness to allow more competitive games.

Noooo waaaayyyy .... T/20 is most worthless form of Cricket !!!!! Just swing the bat !!!!

I think you didn't watch ind vs sa test series.
It was way more interesting than any t20 series i have ever seen.
Measures should be taken to make balanced pitches in tests, if that is done then test matches will never be criticised for being boring.

I work full time and have a busy social life so never really watch test cricket and struggle to stay interested during the highlights..... It just feels like the most successful form of the game is treated with the least respect and is expected to fund the least financially secure version of the game, so that purists get to feel superior towards the people funding their hobby!

Frankly, I feel test match scheduling is so poor that apart from Sundays the only test cricket I can feasibly watch is first session of Australia tests and 3rd session of England/SA tests. It's almost impossible to catch any subcontinental Tests.

I love Tests, but honestly the format is too long, too resistant to change (day/night scheduling please!) and to a large extent, pretty uncompetitive. Frankly, only 3-4 teams at any given time play really good test cricket and actually have box office players. Most series end up blowouts (India away from home, every Ashes series, top 3 vs WI/SL/Bang).

Future of cricket is league/franchise based T20. Ensures that 80+% of all matches are between evenly matched sides and timing works out well for all target audiences.

I am all for T20 if you can bring some balance into the game.Either get the pink ball to make it swing more or make sure its played on a sporting wicket with good enough bounce. If I want to see hacks muscling a ball, I would rather watch baseball.Want to see some skills in display from both bowler and the batsman.
