A lot of people take the mick out of Bollywood for having literal uncles opposite younger girls who are young enough to be their daughters but doesn't that happen in BW too? The one movie which comes in my mind is Wolf of the Wall Street, Margot Robbie had a flowerpot role in the movie and was like in her early 20s whereas Leonardo was in his mid 40s. Same could be said about a lot of RDJ, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise movies but no one bats an eye. Why?

Leonardo still looked pretty good in his 40s. The Bolly uncles probably have pot bellies and wearing a wig, maybe that's why they get lampooned. Just a guess I don't really watch Bollywood.

just because a man is in 40s and the women is in 20s, doesn't mean that the any industry is objectifying women.

Not even close. I am not saying that there isn’t any women objectification in Hollywood, however, in general for every RDJ, Brad Pitt, or Tom cruise you have a Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and many more. Same cannot be said of Bollywood where in general an actress’ career begins and end with their looks while male actors continue to take on lead roles until they are in late 50s.

Other than Salman, I don’t think any actor who’s over 40 in BW wears a wig or has a pot belly.

Objectification of women happens when the sole purpose of a female lead in the movie is for some hot songs and nothing else. It happens more often in Telugu and Tamil movies than Bollywood.
Of course Item songs are another major part of the objectification. Women have no scope to show their acting skills.

You do not see such stuff too often in Hollywood movies except for all of the Bond movies.

I would say the Khans must retire now. They are in their mid 50's now. The newcomers are all barely 20.

Salman does not have Pot belly. But his hair is definitely fake. Same for Amir and SRK.

There are far more item songs in Bollywood than Tamil and Telugu film industries (this is a no contest actually) and there are far more women centric movies in the south indian film industry than Bollywood, although the Bollywood do produce women centric movies too. In general, women centric movies are a rarity in Indian cinema overall except maybe malayalam film industry.

Did Margot Robbie in WOTWS have to show any acting skills? What about most of the women in these useless series Fast, Bond movies? Do they have any significant role? I don't think so.

Yea so you are picking and choosing Hollywood movies and comparing it against majority of Bollywood movies. Margot Robbie has played lead roles in atleast two women centric films Birds of Prey and I Tonya. Also, All lead actresses in the Fast franchise are over 40 lol.

So? I can talk about Vidya Balan doing female centric movies or Tapsee Pannu etc. That doesn't mean anything, the fact is that women objectification exists in Hollywood as well as Bollywood but in Hollywood, it's ignored for some reason.

It’s not ignored for Hollywood, it is talked about quite frequently actually as seen throughout the me too movement and it was also talked about quiet a bit when Megan Fox opened up. But overall, women have meaningful roles in Hollywood and can go on to have successful acting careers even as they age past 40s or 50s. Same can’t be said for Bollywood where the past trend shows that women’s career fall of the rail as they reach past 35. There has been some improvement now with the introduction of alternative mediums like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

People do talk about objectification of women in Hollywood, video games, commercials, etc. In fact they would talk more about it in the West than they would ever do so in the subcontinent.

Hollywood "uncles" are in better shape, Bradley Cooper is almost twice Jennifer Lawrence's age but no one complains

Beyoncé's Renaissance world tour was full of fashion moments, with her three-hour sets featuring numerous dazzling looks.

For her Atlanta show, that came in the form of a flowing neon green sari - a traditional South Asian outfit.

It was the work of Indian fashion designer Gaurav Gupta and took hundreds of hours to finesse.

"My purpose in life is for people to think differently," he tells BBC Asian Network.

Gaurav designed three looks for the Renaissance world tour. As well as the neon green sculpted sari he also made Beyoncé a gem-encrusted gown and a crystal body suit.

Both the sari and the gown came from his runway shows at Paris Fashion Week and took painstaking work to design and create.

Gaurav has previously said the sari took more than 200 hours to create, and he and his team spent more than 700 hours hand stitching 50,000 individual crystals, sequins and beads into the gown.

The crystal body suit was an original design for Beyoncé which took Gaurav and his team over 500 hours to make from start to finish.

Indian culture and saris were central to his looks for the Cuff It singer but when he returned to Delhi after fashion school, Gaurav didn't initially include saris in his collection.

"I relooked at the sari," he says.

"This is one of the most ancient costumes alive in the whole world… it's really cool. Not just from an Indian perspective but from a global perspective."

At the heart of Gaurav's designs is the ancient Hindu concept of the golden womb - the Hiraṇyagarbha - from which the whole universe was born.

He feels his inspiration knows no bounds - literally.

Gaurav says he has a fascination with all things abstract, taking ideas from across the universe down to "patterns in clouds, stars and comets" and combining them with Indian culture and myth.

"India's becoming a vibe," he says.

Gaurav aims to take his country's traditional ideas and combine them with a "sexier, younger, cooler" flair.

He calls this concept "future primitive" and it's become a core part of his brand's aesthetic.

But Beyoncé isn't Gaurav's first A-list client, with the last two years in particular being significant for him.

In 2022, he dressed Megan Thee Stallion for the Oscars, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Cannes and Cardi B for the No Love music video.

And this year, he created another look for Cardi, this time for the Grammys in a gown many considered one of the best of the night.

"I had to literally make Cardi's dress in two days," he says.

"Multiple people made it overnight - day and night - and then it was flown to Los Angeles."

Gaurav doesn't mind the pressure though.

"I live for it. I think it's so exciting," he says.

"It's always a gamble, right? Even after you put in all this effort, it still might not fit her and she still might wear something else."

While he's worked for some of the world's biggest artists, he doesn't see them as stars and celebrities.

"I feel like I'm meeting like-minded people who are on a certain volume in life," he says.

Gaurav believes he was born to bring Indian culture to an international stage.

This year he became only the second Indian designer to be invited to Paris Fashion Week in a show called Shunya - Sanskrit for zero - a number and philosophical concept first discovered in India.

"There is a moment happening for India and Indians globally right now," he says.

The past two years, he adds, have been "extremely magical".

Looking ahead, he has a long list of stars he'd love to work with. He names Harry Styles, Adele, Zendaya, Deepika Padukone and Lady Gaga as just a few.

"I'm not really realising how lucky I am right now because I'm just inside it," he says.

Huge Shakira statue unveiled in her hometown of Barranquilla

A bronze statue of Colombian singer Shakira has been unveiled in her hometown of Barranquilla.

The 6.5m-tall (21.3ft) bronze shows her swivelling her hips in the dance move which featured heavily in her popular Hips Don't Lie video.

The artist shared photos of her parents in front of the statue on her Instagram account.

Shakira was among the names most searched on Google, according to figures released by the company.

Before the unveiling of the new statue, Shakira hit the news several times this year - most notably when she released a song about her former partner, ex-footballer Gerard Piqué, which broke YouTube records in Latin America.

And again when she settled a tax fraud case brought against her in Spain by paying a €7.5m (£6.5m) fine.

The unveiling of the statue on Tuesday was attended by Shakira's parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll, as well as by the mayor of Barranquilla.

A plaque at the foot of the statue praises the artist for her "hips that do not lie, a unique talent, a voice that moves masses".

It also refers to her charity work through a foundation she created called "Pies descalzos", Spanish for "bare feet", which promotes early childhood development.

Shakira thanked the sculptor, Yino Márquez, and his students for the "enormous artistic talent" they had demonstrated by creating the bronze.

The year 2023 was a successful one for the singer, who swept up three Latin Grammy awards, one of them with fellow Colombian artist Karol G.

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood mobile game to shut down

Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, the star's successful mobile game is shutting down almost a decade after its release.

Since 2014 players have lived out their A-list dreams by boosting their fame and climbing the social ladder.

The game also included appearances from the 43-year-old and family members Khloé Kardashian and Kris Jenner.

But Kim confirmed the closure to US magazine People, saying she would "forever be inspired" by the game's community.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star partnered with mobile gaming developer Glu to release Hollywood.

It was a free-to-play title but players could purchase in-game currency K-stars to make a mark through events, modelling and dating.

"I'm so grateful from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has loved and played Kim Kardashian: Hollywood in the past 10 years," Kim said.

She said making the game had "meant so much" to her but it was "time to to focus that energy into other passions".

The game has been removed from Apple and Android app stores, but existing players can still use its features until 8 April.

Recent screenshots of the game show the addition of a timer counting down to its shutdown.

Hollywood overcame initial scepticism following its debut and reportedly earned more than $160m.

It was also named one of the 100 best games of the decade by gaming site Polygon, which described it as a model for "mobile games unapologetically tailored toward young women".

BBC Newsbeat has contacted Kim Kardashian and Electronic Arts (EA), which bought Glu Mobile, for further comment.

All major movie industries tend to objectify women. There seems to be too much emphasize on sexification of women. This has to change because it causes various social problems.

As long as they are making profitable movies, it is fine. These actors help them making more out of their movies as each of these veteran actors have a huge fans base and these fans would like to watch movies of their favorite superstars. The audience still want to see the likes of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise so why should the movie makers stop having them in their movies?

Movies only cater to what male audiences want to see. They want to see beautiful women dancing. Just for a couple of hours they can forget their daily hectic life and indulge in some fantasy.

But, don't you think this can cause social issues? Objectification and sexification of women can plant wrong ideas inside the heads of men. These can also encourage ladies to behave in harmful manners.

A great movie doesn't need objectification/sexification of women to be great. One of the best movies I watched was The Irishman. It was around 3 hours long; a masterpiece movie. There was hardly anything sexual there. Just a very good storyline.

I don't think there were very many women in that film full stop.

That is the criticism that Bollywood gets. Objectification of women is an issue.

Most story lines are paper thin. To cover it up, Director embellishes the movie with meaningless songs and scantily clad women. That way the producer of the movie can hope to at least get his initial investment back if he audience reject the movie. Its a business. Not art. There will always be exceptions to it though.
