As we know ladies Football World Cup is also on every day these days. What do others here think of Women's Sport.

I have no issue with it (as long as they cover their bodies properly). Women sports have market too; many women love watching their kind compete.

Women's sports can never reach the level of men's.
Women are just not strong or fit enough to compete with men.

Women "fast" bowlers have speeds of 110kmph
That's the speed of an average 15/16 year old boy. :)))

You do not have to like or follow women sports but no need to mock nor denigrate it.

I can watch womens tennis, mma and athletics. In these sports women can show some good skills and there is good compeition.

I dont see the point of watching women team sports when the mens games are far superiour in quality.

Women’s tennis is as much quality and intensity as men’s tennis. Arguably it’s even more exciting

I would say some sports are where women’s events are or can achieve same acceptability and quality and excitement. I’d say women’s tennis, mma and trackand field etc are as good as men’s. Soccer is getting there too. Just raw power is not everything in sport.

However other sports esp like WNBA etc are there for sake of it

Yeah ladies Tennis is good no doubt about it. Ladies like Sarena, Martina and Steffi Graf at their peak would have given many men a hard time. That Chris Evert in her younger days was gorgeous by the way!

I am enjoying seeing the England Lionesses charge into the semifinals. So much more guts than the men’s cricket team!

Gauging women's sports through the lens of men's sports is an unfair comparison. Biology dictates that we are stronger/faster. That being said, it is great to admire women's sports as an appreciation of their athleticism (within their gender standards). As a consumer lending our TV time for a sport, we have equal rights to not be interested in women's sports of course.

I'm ex US military and compete in cross fit games (https://games.crossfit.com/sanctionals) at the local level. I'm an amateur and nowhere near good in getting to later stages or winning, I just take pride in being fit enough to compete. I have noticed quite a few women here who are so fit that they would out-compete 75% of male competitors. Also consider this - a top women's soccer team like the US team ... I would bet they can defeat many lower ranked men's soccer teams (including Indian/Pakistani soccer teams).

For those of us interested in women's sports (soccer and beach volleyball for me) it is due to the appreciation of their efforts involved to showcase the levels of athleticism and not a result of direct comparison across genders.

The only difference between the men’s game and the women’s is that the latter has slower passes.

There tend to be more goals as women goalies are shorter.

Oh, and the women don’t do professional fouls and fall over like dying swans like the men.

Well said about the professional fouls :)

Only? They dont have the same power in shooting, intensity in tackling, less range of passing and of course cant run as fast or jump as high. Basically everything is different part from kicking a football.

I know you're an American and most Americans are clueless when it comes to football but you are in some cuckoo land if you think any womens team can beat a mens team. The women may be better passers or more organsied but will easlly be pushed off the ball or outrun.

Also most men watch beach volleyball to perve but wont admit it. When is the next womens volleyball match btw?

Women sports are supposed to be appealing to women only. If any man watches it, good for him.

I don't expect women to be as physically tough as men.

What do others here think of the stupidly that is Women's Sport. Despite the media doing it's best to equal it with men's Sport it is such a major turn off.

I know right. They should sit at home and take care of the kids like good women. Just maybe we might even let them vote.

What you say is relevant in more conservative parts of the world, I agree. But in western cultures this is only a minority. Among men from cultures that inhibit cross-gender interactions (so seeing women running around in itself is equivalent to something x-rated for those pervs). US ain't some podunk back water town in Iran/Saudi/Pakistan/India/Sri Lanka. We see+interact with enough women in day to day life to not be desperate enough to watch women's sports as a means of something x-rated (talk about objectifying women ... geez!). At least among everyone I know, there is strong appreciation for the sport. I play sand volleyball regularly but I know those who are not regular volleyball players but equally appreciate the sport for its athleticism.

If your assertion that most men only watch women's sports as a result of them sexualizing women players then that is inaccurate and sad. If it is only within context of beach volleyball it has high statistical confidence interval only within gender restrictive cultures.

What do Americans know about football - it is soccer for us, and our women know enough to be world champs. Our men do not know enough of soccer yet to compete though.

I still stand by my assertion that a tier 1 women's soccer team (US/Germany/England) can defeat a tier 3 (Pakistan, India, BD, SL ... ) men's soccer team 8 times out of 10 and can defeat a tier 2 (China/Israel/Jordan/Honduras/Kenya) men's soccer team 6-7 times out of 10.

Women sports are a few level below men's in every discipline.
Watching women tennis is akin to watching college level matches. Top female tennis player will struggle to beat even 500 ranked Male player. Following cases point out the gap in quality.
When former number 1's Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt were dating, she said that she struggled to win a point off Hewitt, let alone a game.
When female player Chris Evert-Lloyd was at her peak, she said her brother who played low-level college tennis beat her (taken from her autobiography).

Totally agree with regards to tennis. I have heard of these 2 exact instances as well.

Aus' women's football team lost 9-0 or something to a club level u15 boys.:)))

"Australian women's national team lose 7-0 to team of 15-year-old boys"

This isn't fake news. It actually happened.
Pak's football team would beat aus 10/10 times just coz of them being stronger and fitter.

Most men imo watch womens volleyball to perve. I didnt mention other sports, so please read carefully instead of making assumptions. If you disagree fine but to suggest westerners are not as perverted is laughable. USA is the biggest producer of explicit material. Again this is your opinion with no substance.

Anyway lets stick to sport, you claimed womens team would beat mens teams. I assume you take this back as you have ignored my response?

I have nothing but respect for women. They have their own challenges and I salute them for their contributions.

He clearly has never played football. lol.

Any half decent strong man can shield the ball with his physical advantage while running or at a standstill.

As kids we had a couple of girls playing with us who were pretty decent but we didn't tackle them with any strength because it would render them useless.

I know right. They should sit at home and take care of the kids like good women. Just maybe we might even let them vote.

Some people are assigned to have specific roles. How many men do you see sitting at home and taking care of children and the wife goes to work??? Barely any.

The percentage of women going to work is far greater than the percentage of men staying at home.

I can't believe that female footballers wanted the same wage as the men footballers.
This equality stuff is so annoying.

Men and women can never be equal. Women are more suited to some stuff more than men and vice versa.

Did they? Playing football isn't an office job where you both have the same pen. Women dont generate not even 5% of the revenue of the mens game, so can't expect to be on the same wages.

Well maybe them 15 y.o boys can beat the Pakistan team too, who knows :P. I concur that my knowledge of soccer is not as big as y'all following professional soccer leagues in Europe. I do accept that no women's football (American football) team can compete with men's team due to sheer difference in contact nature of the sport. So yeah in terms of shoving/pushing women cannot compete. But in terms endurance, agility, and skill - the top % of women can out perform the bottom quartiles of men. My impression was that soccer has less contact element if that is not the case more than happy to stand corrected of course - not here to prove myself right no matter what unlike some of y'all.

I do have first hand knowledge as a competitor in crossfit games and seeing women's scores there. The top performing women had better metrics than the bottom quartile (lower 25%) and sometimes even the bottom 2nd quartile (50%) of men. These games test complete body strength along with endurance, flexibility, and target muscular strength throughout the body. Have you played regular sports as an adult and still do? If you do, then you can appreciate the intensity of crossfit games.

Now this I will agree with you. If they did ask for same pay it is **. Pay should be determined by how much revenue they generate as a sporting league - pure market dynamics. Case in point would be roller derby leagues in the US. It would be ** and laughable if men set up a league there and demand equal pay.

Case in point - long distance endurance swimming. Women usually equal men in this and have outperformed men (Manhattan island marathon swim). Source - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4495100/

Also lookup Penny Dean who shattered world record in swimming across Catalina island (California). Her record stands to this day and is not broken by a man yet.

Its football not soccer. :) Football is a physical game, you are allowed to use your body strength when competing for the balll. You can also use your body to overpower the opponent when tackling or heading the ball as long as you touch the ball first. Its best you dont make assertions such as American women can beat Asian men, this is ingorance and possibly brings out your own personal prejudices.

What is crossfit? IS this another American name for the Triathlon? Obviously fitter women will do better against unfit men. But those who train and compete, you cant be suggesting women will beat the men? Any proof of this in times, results?

I know, I know, rest of the world it is football and it is soccer only for us Americans. I prefer calling it soccer since when I think football I only think of Tony Romo or Jerry Rice.

No crossfit is not triathlon, I thought it has caught on in Europe as well? The leader boards have as many Europeans as Americans in it (https://games.crossfit.com/article/top-20-men-and-women-2019-open/open). I would say crossfit games would be the most complete fitness test. I'm a sports nut so I have played league level volleyball (still play at low key local leagues), tried for college football team (which in the US is as competitive pro team) but was not good enough, tried cricket (tennis ball) for fun in India and played soccer for fun few times with friends. None of these (seriously none) have the intensity and complete work out of crossfit game regimen. Your body needs absolute total fitness. The top % of women competitors I saw there did outperform the bottom 15-25% of men in the event (not the non-athletic pot bellied keyboard warriors).

Please do look up crossfit games not for a silly debate here but for interesting sports tidbit. Also see my earlier post with proof about endurance events like long distance open ocean swimming where women have outperformed men.

It doesn't state on the link. Wha are the events in crossift? As Triathlon is running, swiming and cycling.

Website does not seem the best for navigating. This is list of events for the individuals section - https://games.crossfit.com/workouts/games/2018 - I have been doing these and I can tell you that towards the end every muscle in you will scream in pain and you can almost hear the lungs crying for oxygen if you do it with the intensity of competing with others. Also see video below

I got into this since it is similar to the training regimen in the military. Been doing it 3 times a week for years and finally got to competitive level 3-4 years ago. Highly recommend to those of you wanting to get fit.

Thanks. This is similar to what we call 'circuit training'. I have been doing something similar for years and you are right it does take a lot of stamina and intensity. I agree with you its something people should do to help get fit. Men and women use different weights in the relevant events. Thefore you cannot compare the times surely?

I know right. They should sit at home and take care of the kids like good women. Just maybe we might even let them vote.

Now you are just seeing things. They should not have to do everything in their obsession with competing with men.

They did.
Many statements from female footballers requesting for equal pay.

Yes, we cannot of course. BUT, the top performing women athletes that get chosen from the regionals (video above is a regional and not national) train with men's weights so that they can compete well at the women's level. I know because my training group is co-ed and I have heard from other training groups for this to be a standard practice. Top few men also add extra weights when training to get competitive. It is well known that the top performing women actually beat some of the men's timings when they train. Think of it as an overlap in performance timing graphs between men and women. Bottom 15-25% of men's timings overlap with the top women's.

I’ve seen some very fast shots going on. The last goal by England in the Norway match went like a shell.

Sprinting speed isn’t such a factor in football.

The women are tougher than the men at tackling as they don’t cheat by falling over.

It was US women’s team and there egenrate more money and sponsorships than the US men’s team. So their demand is far

For those of us interested in women's sports (soccer and beach volleyball for me) it is due to the appreciation of their efforts involved to showcase the levels of athleticism and not a result of direct comparison across genders.

The US women's team lost to FC Dallas' U15 men's team. You can't be serious. Women's tennis and athletics is very high in quality. However the team sports are no where near the level of the men. I can't stand Women's football for how slow the passing is, and the fact that the keepers can be 5ft4 despite the net being still the same size as the men's. It's a joke. The 13-0 win over Thailand where the USWNT's celebrated every goal like they won the UCL was a bad advertisement for the sport.

As for the wage issue, I'm not sure why the women's footballers/cricketers/basketball players complain about it. It's like complaining about not getting bonuses at an office job for top quality work and bringing new clients in, when you've done nothing to show that you've got that same level of quality or pull. They simply don't bring in the viewership and money into the sport as the men do due to the lower level in quality.

Also Robert you're only saying the "guts" thing because England aren't winning all of a sudden! It's the same as football fans saying "no passion, no fight, no leaders" when they get battered but when they constantly get wins next season on route to the title, nobody mentions these things even if the squad is very similar. E.g Chelsea from 15/16 to 16/17 (yes, people said this, and even called Hazard and Cesc part of the "three rats", then cried when they left). I didn't hear this thing about guts when England was ranked no.1 going into the tournament and were winning at the start of the WC.

Ladies watch men's Sport. Most men couldn't care less when ladies are playing anything.

South Asian men should not talk about sports in general. We are the least physically active group of men in the world and cannot compete in any sport globally. Cricket is the only thing we are good at. I have two girls and they are very active in softball and basketball. I completely support empowering young girls through sports. The guy who posted about how he is ok with women sport as long as they cover up - the 16th century is calling you back. I am willing to bet money that the US women's football team will beat both the Pakistani and Indian national men's football teams

See the post above yours by Slog that it was the US women's soccer team and they do generate more revenue and sponsorship than the men's team so their demand is completely justified.

Regarding your points about team sports - those are subjective so it can vary from person to person as to what each of us values as sports audience.

Regarding general athleticism of women relative to women - see my posts above regarding sports where women do outperform all men and athletic events like crossfit games where there is an overlap between women and men performers.

I agree with this too but people are quoting some 15 y.o team beating Australian team. I'm not sure if Pakistani/Indian men's team will hold up to US women's team in spite of that link because ...

1. They were beaten by a 15 y.o Australian team which I would contest could be more athletic than Pakistani/Indian team

2. This was a practice game for them where they were rotating all the players just to get practice. It will be different when things get competitive and people play to their positions

3. I'm no soccer expert but my understanding is that it is a combination of endurance+power+skill+agility. Women generally cannot compete with men in terms of power due to biological disadvantage (especially pushing and shoving). But women can compete with men in endurance, skill, and agility with enough dedicated practice and good coaching. The US women's team I would say has higher endurance+skill+agility than Pakistani/Indian men's teams and as women they only lack in power. If they can make up for that with the other 3 on game day, then they can beat Pakistani/Indian men's teams.

Many female American or European athletes are in more peak physical condition than their south Asian male counterparts. They also possess more skills. In one on one sports and certain team sports I would definitely give the edge to the females over our males. It may bruise the ego of some keyboard warriors here though and they will never agree with you. They will challenge you on grounds like how the woman should be covered up and in the kitchen. Dinosaurs

Yeah ladies Tennis is good no doubt about it. Ladies like Sarena, Martina and Steffi Graf at their peak would have given many men a hard time. That Chris Evert in her younger days was gorgeous by the way!

Evert could never defeat her brother who was a low level college player, this was when she was ranked number 1 among the ladies. The Williams sisters lost against a 200th ranked ATP player 0-6, 1-6 and the male player there (Karsten Braasch) was puffing cigarettes and drinking alcohol between points. There is an Indian player Yuki Bhambri who was 2009 junior Australian Open singles champion, he had a training match against Sharapova when she was at her peak, the 15 year old Indian kid beat her in straight sets.

Do check the female athletics world records and compare it to Indian national men's records. That will be embarrassing, compare the female athletics world records with recent Indian University championship results and still they won't come close. I am a college athlete, so I know the numbers.

Let's stick to the main topic.

Are women sports relevant? Answer: It is relevant to women but not necessarily to all men.

Are women sports fun to watch? Answer: Probably not.

Am I going to watch women sports? Answer: Only if my wife is playing.

Also consider this - a top women's soccer team like the US team ... I would bet they can defeat many lower ranked men's soccer teams (including Indian/Pakistani soccer teams).

India U-16 boys beat US Women’s Senior Team

The India U-16 boys who are presently training at the IMG Academy in Florida defeated the US Women’s Senior National 4-0 in an exhibition match. Lalransanga scored a brace while Lalramuana and Uttam Rai scored one apiece.

Sajid Bashira and Myron Mendes co-ordinated well in defence not allowing the rivals to create inroads. Goalkeeper Supratim Bhattacharya was also exceptional under the bar. In the midfield, Siddharth and Allen Deory combined well to keep the supply line flowing for strikers Uttam Rai and Lalramsanga.

India is a minnow football nation, if our u-16 boys can beat the women's world champions 4-0, what does that say about women's football? You are spot on.

I am willing to bet money that the US women's football team will beat both the Pakistani and Indian national men's football teams

Let the US women's team beat our under 16 boys first. Do not make assumptions without basis about India/Pakistan. Link in above post.

Very sad to see some of the opinions here. So the US women's soccer team can be defeated by your men's teams - big whoop! That is only one of the examples I quoted and y'all conveniently forgot the other examples.

#1 - long distance endurance swimming
Women usually equal men in this and have outperformed men (Manhattan island marathon swim). Source - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4495100/

Lookup Penny Dean who shattered world record in swimming across Catalina island (California). Her record stands to this day and is not broken by a man yet.

#2 CrossFit games. I'm a competitor, please also look at the information with links I posted.

Women do lack in strength/power compared to men thanks to biology. But that in no way diminishes their athletic achievements. Watching women's sports is a subjective preference and to me that subjectiveness seems to be a function of our personal notions of gender equality.

Some unpleasant comments we see in this thread
1. Stating that those who follow women's sports only do so to leer at their bodies - same people then take offense at stereotyping Pakistani/Indian men's teams -- oh the irony!
2. Opinions that women are not fit to vote (let alone lead)
3. General trivializing of women's accomplishments

and then people wonder why the west has a bad opinion on South Asian treatment of women.

Women in sports need to be encouraged, just like the men. I want to see more participation by girls in grassroot sports. But to spout stuff like they are better than men or are more entertaining will be called out. You can't make frivolous claims like women tennis players are equivalent to top men, or that women football teams are better than many men's national teams and get away with it. Doing that makes the discussion trivial. The only sports where they are better than men are ultramarathons and ultra swimming. I acknowledge that and will give them their due. But don't extrapolate it to cover other sports especially the popular ones.

Coming to OP, I enjoy women's tennis (singles), badminton, swimming, athletics and MMA. I also believe they are very good in shooting, archery and probably more entertaining than the men in gymnastics which is a very tough sport.

used to follow womens tennis back in the day, but its totally dead these day.

the probem is most womens sport is like watching super low level mens game. i wouldnt watch lower league level football so why would i watch womens international football.

the real purpose of womens sport should be a platform for women to compete to eventually play against, or with men in sports which do not magnify basic physical differences.

i see no reason why any woman, if she was skilled enough couldn't be a spin bowler or a keeper in a mens cricket team, but for that u need a change in psyche to allow women to compete with men on some platform (preferably age grade i guess).

Even great players and teams lose against lesser opponents now and again. It can be difficult to motivate yourself when playing a meaningless match.

I already said that Women's athletics is high in quality so I've already agreed with you there. Sure, at national level they might generate more revenue, however domestic football is more important than national football to bringing in money to the sport, and Alex Morgan is not bringing in more money than Christian Pulisic in that sense. Most people don't care about international football unless it''s a major tournament. Friendlies and boring concepts such as the nation's league aren't doing much for the sport.

It's not really all that subjective - it's quite clear to see that the team sports for Women are at a lower quality. I've watched team sport all my life so the difference is clear, especially in football. What everyone generally will value is quality (this is key - if the passing is slow with a lack of range, the defenders are poor and the GK can't save anything because of the size of the goal, it's not going to be high in quality) and entertaining, competitive games. Only the fans of the team winning will enjoy their team crushing another team with a keeper who's 5'4, it's not fun to watch for anyone else. There are general criteria that makes a team sport bring in high levels of viewership, it's not exactly as subjective as art.

Women's sports can never reach the level of men's.
Women are just not strong or fit enough to compete with men.

Women "fast" bowlers have speeds of 110kmph
That's the speed of an average 15/16 year old boy. :)))

And what is so funny in that? The physical stature and strentgh of men is greater than women and that is understood, bar some exceptions. This thread is not comparing the physical strength of men and women. They may not be physically equal to men but that does not mean that they dont bring equal intensity, passion and skill to the sport.
You seem pretty inmature by seeing your trend of comments, involving unnecessary laughter at the physical mould of women. You may not enjoy women's sport because you find them weak but that is no reason to demean it.

South Asian men should not talk about sports in general. We are the least physically active group of men in the world and cannot compete in any sport globally. This.A classic thread to sit and bash women and downplay their passion and skill just because one does not enjoy it on a personal level.I do not understand why women's sport has to be looked down upon and termed 'stupid' just because one does not enjoy it.There are things in life not meant for everybody.Doesnt mean you have to think its existence is stupid and unncessary.

The prize money for the winner of the women's world cup is the same as the for the cricket world cup -- $4 million.

Does this mean cricket is as small as women's football or women's football is as lucrative as cricket?

Keep in mind we are only comparing the world cups. Non world cup revenues are exponentially higher for cricket.

US Women's equal pay claim dismissed by court

The United States women's football team's bid for equal pay has been dismissed by a court, with the judge rejecting the players' claims they were underpaid compared to the men.

The lawsuit was filed by 28 women's national team players last year against the US Soccer Federation (USSF).

They had been seeking $66m (£52.8m) in damages under the Equal Pay Act.

Molly Levinson, the players' spokeswoman, said that they planned to appeal against the decision.

"We are shocked and disappointed," said Levinson. "We will not give up our hard work for equal pay.

"We are confident in our case and steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that girls and women who play this sport will not be valued as lesser just because of their gender."

Federal judge Gary Klausner allowed the players' case for unfair treatment in travel, housing and medical support to go to trial, which is set for 16 June in Los Angeles.

Giving its ruling, the court said: "The women's team has been paid more on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis than the men's team over the class period."

The US team won the Women's World Cup last summer for their fourth title overall. They have also won five Olympic gold medals.

After the equal pay claim was dismissed, striker Megan Rapinoe, who won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at last year's World Cup, tweeted: "We will never stop fighting for equality."

Fellow US striker Alex Morgan said: "Although disappointing to hear this news, this will not discourage us in our fight for equality."

The USSF said it wanted to work with the team to "chart a positive path forward to grow the game both here at home and around the world".

Its statement added: "US Soccer has long been the world leader for the women's game on and off the field and we are committed to continuing that work."

Former USSF president Carlos Cordeiro resigned in March after lawyers for US football's governing body made submissions as part of the lawsuit in which it was claimed that the job of a male footballer on the national team "requires a higher level of skill based on speed and strength" than their female counterparts.

Before they played Japan in the SheBelieves Cup on 12 March, the US players turned their tops inside out during the warm-up to hide their badges, leaving only the four stars which represent their World Cup successes on show.

The US men's team made the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002, while their best finish was third place in the inaugural tournament in 1930.

The women's case had been publicly supported by male players, and in February the US men's team issued a statement criticising the governing body, saying that "the federation continues to discriminate against the women in their wages and working conditions".

Totally agree.

You dont pay the same amount as money to watch someone with the skils of a 12 year old as you would pay to watch a male proffesional footballer.

I’ve seen some very fast shots going on. The last goal by England in the Norway match went like a shell.

Sprinting speed isn’t such a factor in football.

The women are tougher than the men at tackling
as they don’t cheat by falling over.

Back of he heels maybe and hair pulling :inti

Biden backs women's soccer team after lawsuit setback

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Saturday voiced his support for the U.S. women’s soccer team, a day after it suffered a setback in its gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation.

The team’s claims for equal pay were dismissed by a court on Friday, handing a victory to U.S. Soccer.

“Don’t give up this fight. This is not over yet,” Biden wrote in a tweet to the team.

“Equal pay, now. Or else when I’m president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding,” Biden added to the federation.

The former vice president is looking to unseat incumbent Republican Donald Trump in November’s U.S. presidential election.

The World Cup-winning team’s long-running feud with U.S. Soccer has been a very public and bitter battle and the players had been seeking $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay Act.

On Friday, Judge R. Gary Klausner of the United States District Court for the Central District of California threw out the players’ claims that they were under paid in comparison with the men’s national team.

The court allowed complaints of unfair medical, travel and training to proceed to trial, which is scheduled to begin June 16.

“The WNT (Women’s National Team) has been paid more on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis than the MNT (Men’s National Team) over the class period,” the court said in its summary judgment.

U.S. Soccer on Friday said it wanted to work with the team to “chart a positive path forward to grow the game both here at home and around the world.”

The players have said they plan to appeal the court’s decision.

Billie Jean King, who famously battled for equal pay in tennis, also offered words of encouragement to the team on Saturday.

“This is a setback, but it is not the end of the fight,” she wrote on Twitter.

“The pursuit of equality is a marathon not a sprint, and this lawsuit has generated a meaningful conversation about the treatment of women in sports,” she said.

“One ruling does not diminish its impact.”

Last month U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro resigned over language used in a court filing suggesting women possess less ability than men when it comes to soccer.

The language prompted an on-field protest by players, who wore their warmup jerseys inside out to obscure the U.S. Soccer logo prior to a game, and a critical response from several of the team’s commercial sponsors.

U.S. women's soccer team file to appeal equal pay ruling

(Reuters) - The U.S. women’s soccer team have filed to appeal a district court decision handed down last week that dismissed their claims for equal pay, a spokesperson for the team said on Friday.

The team suffered an unexpected blow to their high-profile case against their federation when the court threw out the players’ claims that they were under paid in comparison with the men’s national team.

District Court Judge R. Gary Klausner said the World Cup champions were paid more on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis than their male counterparts, who failed to qualify for the last World Cup.

The women’s team on Friday vowed to continue their fight.

“Equal pay means paying women players the same rate for winning a game as men get paid,” said Molly Levinson, spokesperson for the players.

“The argument that women are paid enough if they make close to the same amount as men while winning more than twice as often is not equal pay,” she said.

The players had been seeking $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay Act.

Klausner’s ruling, however, allowed the players’ claims that they do not receive equal treatment when it comes to travel, training, housing and other areas to proceed.

Those claims will be adjudicated at a trial set for June 16.

The women’s national team beat the Netherlands to claim its fourth World Cup title last summer, as the stadium rang with chants of “Equal Pay, Equal Pay”, catapulting its players into the spotlight.

The U.S national team’s long-running feud with U.S. Soccer has been a very public and bitter battle with athletes and celebrities, from Billie Jean King to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rallying around the women’s cause.

Last month, U.S.

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has become the world's highest-paid female athlete, displacing US rival Serena Williams at the top of the list.

According to Forbes magazine, Osaka, 22, a two-time Grand Slam champion, made £30.7m in prize money and endorsements over the past 12 months.

That was £1.15m more than the amount earned by 38-year-old Williams.

Both shattered the previous single-year earnings record of £24.4m set in 2015 by Russia's Maria Sharapova.

Since Forbes began tracking women athletes' income in 1990, tennis players have topped the annual list every year.

Osaka, whose father was born in Haiti and whose mother is Japanese, is 29th on the 2020 Forbes list of the world's 100 top-paid athletes, four spots ahead of Williams, the winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

The complete Forbes list, due to be released next week, has not featured two women since 2016, the magazine says.

The pair met in the 2018 US Open final with Osaka winning her first Grand Slam title in a highly controversial match in which Williams was given three code violations by the umpire.

The Japanese then won the 2019 Australian Open, although her form has since dipped and she has fallen from world number one to 10th on the WTA rankings.

Williams had been the world's highest-paid female athlete in each of the past four years, with Sharapova ruling for the five years before that.

Osaka has been a popular endorsement figure in Japan in the build-up to the now-postponed Tokyo Olympics, securing lucrative deals with global brands Nike, Nissan and Yonex, among others.

FIFA approves introduction of 14-week maternity leave in women's game

FIFA has introduced new rules that guarantee maternity leave and working rights for players in the women's game.

The rules were proposed last month and were given approval by the FIFA Council on Friday.

Pregnant players will now be given maternity leave lasting 14 weeks and must be paid at least two-thirds of their salary by their clubs.

Clubs will be obliged to reintegrate the player when they return and to provide adequate medical support, although they can register a new player to cover the 14-week period.

In addition, clubs will be unable to terminate the contract of a player on the basis of their pregnancy. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in an order to pay compensation to the player as well as sporting sanctions - and potentially a fine - being issued to the offending club.

Speaking after the rules - which will be enforced worldwide - were given the green light, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: "If we are serious about boosting the women's game, we have to look at all these aspects.

"Female players need to have stability in their careers and if they take maternity leave, they should not have to worry about when they are ready to play again."

Speaking earlier this month, Wales Women manager Jayne Ludlow said: "I think many would say it's probably been a long time coming.

"The game is developing so quickly right now and this was obviously just another part that needed to be done because if you are a professional female, just like in any other walk of life, if you're a professional in any other job, you would expect these things.

"Thankfully for females who are playing in the game now who do want a family, then it's fantastic for them.

"When you break it all down, those professional players need to be looked after in a professional manner, so this for me is part of that."

England reached their first major women's tournament final since 2009 in stunning fashion as they put four past Olympic finalists Sweden at Euro 2022 in Sheffield.

The Lionesses, who extended their unbeaten run to 19 games under manager Sarina Wiegman, will play either Germany or France for the ultimate prize at Wembley on 31 July.

It was a thrilling match from start to finish at Bramall Lane as Sweden piled on the pressure in the opening 25 minutes, only for England to dismantle them with ruthless finishing and a touch of class.

Substitute Alessia Russo once again produced a moment of magic when her instinctive backheel made it 3-0 to England only 11 minutes after her introduction.

Golden Boot leader Beth Mead had put England ahead in the first half against the run of play, spinning and firing into the far corner, before defender Lucy Bronze headed in a second.

Chelsea's Fran Kirby put the icing on the cake when she chipped despairing goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl to complete the rout.

England keeper Mary Earps was in fine form, pulling off numerous saves to deny Arsenal striker Stina Blackstenius - the best coming early in the second half when she reacted to tip a looping effort inches over the crossbar from close range.

Blackstenius had earlier hit the crossbar before Mead's opener swung momentum in England's favour and from then on it was a display of their impressive attacking depth.

Victory for the Lionesses ends a 13-year wait to return to the final of a major tournament and they are the favourites to lift the trophy for the first time at Wembley on Sunday.

England are now one win away from glory.

England have enjoyed some memorable moments with their fans already at this tournament but the post-match celebrations at Bramall Lane went up a gear.

The chants of "Football's coming home" grew louder with each passing minute in the second half and rarely have its lyrics felt more believable.

After coming from behind to see off pre-tournament favourites Spain in the quarter-finals, England went one step further with this demolition of a Sweden side ranked second in the world.

They looked cagey and vulnerable at the start as Sweden piled on the pressure but England, as they have done so often under Wiegman, found an answer.

Mead's opener seemed to release the shackles and as the crowd's voice grew louder, England's energy grew with it.

Bronze's header gave them a cushion in the second half and Russo, scoring her fourth goal in four substitute appearances, once again made a huge impact.

Kirby's cheeky chip added salt to Sweden's wounds and from then on it was a party atmosphere at Bramall Lane as England's place at Wembley was confirmed.

They are now one victory away from winning the nation's first major football trophy in 56 years.

England’s Beth Mead has tormented every opposition at this Euros and it was only fitting she was the one to open the scoring and provide the catalyst for England's impressive victory in Sheffield.

She spent most of the opening 25 minutes tracking back down the right to offer defensive support for Lucy Bronze but remained an outlet on the break.

But the Arsenal forward had England's first big chance of the match when she glanced a header inches wide of the post within four minutes and it took just over half an hour for her to make her mark.

It was Mead's sixth goal of the tournament - overtaking Jodie Taylor's five at Euro 2017 which earned her the Golden Boot.

Mead can still add to that impressive tally at Wembley where she netted a second-half hat-trick against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier last year.

Her closest challenger is Germany's Alexandra Popp on four goals - although she could add more in Wednesday's semi-final against France - and the two could go head-to-head in the final.

Alessia Russo, meanwhile, is quickly becoming a household name.

The Manchester United forward has developed into a terrifying weapon for England off the bench and when she came on the crowd were on their feet in excitement for what was to come.

She took less than a minute to deliver - firing an inch-perfect cross to the back post for youngster Lauren Hemp, but she could only slice it onto the crossbar.

Russo's moment would arrive 11 minutes later, when her initial strike was well saved, only for the 23-year-old to audaciously backheel the ball under the keeper's legs from close range as she ran away from goal.

It drew gasps from those in the crowd and as Russo ran, arms outstretched with her mouth wide open in shock, England suddenly looked sure of a place in Wembley's final.

Wiegman has named the same starting XI in all five of England's Euro 2022 games but Russo, who is joint-second in the Golden Boot race, could not have given a better audition for a starring role.

England midfielder Keira Walsh has joined Barcelona in a world-record deal from Manchester City.

The fee of about £400,000 breaks the previous record for a female player set by Chelsea, who paid more than £250,000 for Pernille Harder in 2020.

Euro 2022 winner Walsh, who had a year left on her contract, leaves City after eight years.

The 25-year-old follows fellow England international Lucy Bronze in swapping Manchester for Barcelona.

Defensive midfielder Walsh, who has signed a three-year-deal with Barca, played an influential role in England's Euro 2022 triumph.

She won the Player of the Match award in the 2-1 extra-time final win over Germany at Wembley.

City had turned down previous bids made by the Catalan club, who won their third successive Primera Division title last season.

Barcelona are currently without Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder Alexia Putellas, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament while training with Spain in July before the Euros.

Walsh has been ever-present for City since making her debut in 2014, making 211 appearances and winning eight major trophies with her childhood club.

She played 18 times for Gareth Taylor's side in the Women's Super League last season, scoring once and registering nine assists.

Since earning her first cap for England in 2017, Walsh has made 50 appearances for the Lionesses.

City have also lost England midfielder Georgia Stanway to Bayern Munich and Scotland's Caroline Weir to Real Madrid this summer, while both Ellen White and Jill Scott announced their retirement from football last month.
