The Women's T20 World Cup has been shaken by an alleged spot-fixing attempt involving a former international cricketer.

A Bangladesh Cricket Board official said on Wednesday that the tournament's anti-corruption unit had been made aware of a bid to spot-fix on the competition in South Africa.

Shohely Akhter, who played a smattering of one-day and T20 games for Bangladesh between 2013 and 2022, allegedly contacted Lata Mondal in a bid to spot-fix.

Mondal, a member of the Bangladesh World Cup squad, rejected the proposal and informed the national cricket board.

Bangladesh is playing in group one with Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand.

The team, skippered by Nigar Sultana, has lost to Sri Lanka by seven wickets and Australia by eight wickets.

Bangladesh will meet New Zealand at Newlands Cricket Ground from 12am on Saturday (AEDT).

With more money coming into Women's cricket, this will become a real problem.

Very intriguing that too in BD cricket but good to see it being reported ASAP

Wow! This is unexpected.

If the player indeed did this, she should be banned for life.

Bangladesh cricketer handed 5-year ban after fixing charges

Bangladesh women’s cricketer Shohely Akhter has been handed a 5-year ban from all forms of cricket over charges of match-fixing during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. The 36-year-old accepted the charges and admitted breaching five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. Shohely’s period of ineligibility started on February 10, 2025.

Back in 2023, Jamuna TV, a news outlet in Dhaka, released an audio where two cricketers were allegedly having a conversation. It was reported that Lata Mondal had approached her during the mega event in South Africa. But Shohely had denied the allegations, saying that it was a case of miscommunication.

Shohely mentioned that she had connected with a "friend" on social media and engaged in several heated arguments with them. The 34-year-old explained that the situation escalated after she confided in a Bangladesh teammate, who then reported the matter to the BCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

Article 2.4.4: Failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.

Article 2.4.7: Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code (by any Participant), including (without limitation) concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence of or may lead to the discovery of evidence of Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.

In two ODIs and 13 T20Is, Shohely took 11 wickets with a four-wicket haul to her name. She last played for Bangladesh in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 match against Sri Lanka back on October 10 at the Sylhet International Stadium.
