Moeen has to be higher, his beard it second only to Grace himself.

^Jadeja beasts it with a troll face to boot.

He had a pretty big one by the time he retired. How big a beard did Marshall and Botham have?
not enough to compete with Moeen 'Bhai'. You don't really see bowlers with beards so big enough I suppose.

Selection should be made on merit. OP is a corrupt selector. :moyo

I don't see the logic behind advocating Saeed Anwar. He kept a beard in the twilight of his career so it wasn't really an iconic part of his profile as a cricketer, like it is for guys like Amla and WG Grace.

Similarly, Inzamam and Moyo were clean shaven for the better of their careers.

Who said you had to always keep a beard to be selected into this team?

The beard should be part of your career long enough for it to form a part of your identity. For Inzamam and Moyo perhaps yes (although I don't agree personally) but Saeed Anwar? how many people imagine Saeed Anwar with a beard when they think of him? All the good memories are attached to a clean shaven Saeed because that is when his best performances came.

Don't agree, if you had a beard then youre eligible. I'd even say that the Mushtaqs deserve a shout.

Which is fine. In my Beard XI, I would look for players who had iconic beards. :amla

Fair enough, good to see that we don't have to fight.

? Gooch is in there without a beard. He just had a Mo.

Surely someone who actually had an epic beard like Anwar should get ahead of him.

I won't have Gooch either. In fact I might and will struggle to put together 11 players with iconic beards but I wont throw in guys like Saeed Anwar just to fill in the numbers. I need to think of them with a beard to include them.

Vettori has had a variety of beards over the years. Sometimes he seems to grow one in the span of a test match.

Wasim Hasan Raja should be there as well.

Me.

And Gooch did have a beard for most of his career.

And that explains Yousuf being in there? And no, he didn't always have a beard when he converted and became MoYo either.

Cricinfo did this a while ago. Their XI:

And so, for no reason, cricket's greatest bearded XI.

1. S Anwar - How one imagines Abraham Lincoln would look if he was stockier, darker, shorter, less gaunt, and a cavalier opening batsman from Pakistan.

2. CG Greenidge - Great to watch, our Gordon. Instead of calling for a runner when injured, he'd see it as an opportunity to stand back and belt boundaries. Top batsman, top beard. Coincidence? Probably it is, yes.

3. HM Amla - Another Abe Lincoln look-alike, you could put Hashim on a throne and carve him in marble and you'd be hard pressed telling them apart. Potentially the greatest beard to play for South Africa.

4. IVA Richards - With piercing eyes, a hawk-like Arabian countenance, and a cool spade-shaped beard, Viv had the ominous look of a struttin', jive-talkin' street dude comin' to collect the vig.

5. GS Chappell - With skin cancer warnings telling Australians to "Slip, Slop, Slap" (wear a shirt, sun cream and hat) Chappell went one better by sporting a beard best described as an upside-down ginger afro. Ever seen Krusty the Clown do a handstand? Greg Chappell's beard.

6. WG Grace (C) - Cricket's greatest beard. This large lump of England looked equal parts Ned Kelly after a diet of turkey fat and beer, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro. A colossus of the game, WG's beard had the thickness of a wombat, badger or wolverine carcass. Top stuff.

7. PJL Dujon - While his beard came across a little blotchy, a little wispy, a little Che Guevara, this Calypso keeper had enough street cred to carry it off like an extra on Miami Vice, one of those Snoop Dog-like drug-dealing pimp guys with "attitood" and bling who'd sit on their huge boats with their mommas and taunt Crockett and his mate, the other one, about their daggy pastel clothes and, of course, lack of beards.

8. MD Marshall - With a tight peppercorn do that made him look equal parts junkyard dog and filled-out Kalahari Bushman, Marshall ran into the crease looking like Danny Glover in the first Lethal Weapon movie, the one when he's in the bath and it's his 50th birthday. Except Malcolm had a cricket ball and ran very fast.

9. TG Hogan - A left-arm orthodox spinner notable for his beard, wristbands and … that is all.

10. RJ Bright - A left-arm orthodox spinner notable for his seven wickets in the '86 Tied Test. But mainly for the beard.

11.BS Bedi - Since he could grow one, the original Turbanator has never not had a beard. Good luck to him.

12. GR Beard - Didn't actually have a beard but a perfect drinks waiter for this XI.

That would cause quite a confusion and conflict of interest on PakPassion. Moeen bhai has the better beard though.

Not really. Amla being the better player and playing for the more likable team will have my support, at least.
Robert - Ali bowled to Amla during a World T20 match. The flood-lights lost power due to sheer awesomeness. :))

Moeen bhai has a silkier beard; when he goes for a dive it kind of flows which is pretty good to watch. Amla bhai's beard is rigid, in contrast to his silky batting (outside pressure matches in ODIs).

For someone who hates beards, you sure observe them quite closely. Sour grapes? :amla

Poor Bilal7.

Ever since his comment about Amla and averages, he has been dragged into every conversation involving these two and beards. :))

In fact, his statement has become so iconic that it gets talked about even in the Indian forums at times.

This Mamoon is the culprit for everything. Bilal must fight back. ;-)

I have yet to see why that statement is so controversial. Although the fact that I'm being mentioned in a forum that I have never visited is quite an honor. :mv

Disturbingly detailed analysis of beards. Silky flowing? :danish

Not as disturbing as your username or past history with avatars. :sanga

Now that statement is valid for two players, it will be fun playing England later this year.

Leatherface is one of the most misunderstood characters in the history of horror cinema. More sympathetic than even Norman Bates.

As far as avatar goes, I asked you about the current one but no response. :afaq

I am really interested in this topic.

I have to make sure of the criteria though.

Length - What qualifies for a beard here? Are we talking a 4'oclock shadow or full blown face bush here.

Style - Does it have to cover the whole of the face or can one sporting a goatee can also be considered?

Time Period - Is it a beard kept during the playing years or post retirement? (qualifies most Pakistani players)

I told you that I like it. Innocent enough.

I still think that Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq should be picked on their beard merit, here.

INZI and MOYO played long enough with a beard to be considered MOYO had his record test season with a beard . Saeed I agree he only started keeping a beard after he got religious once his daughter passed away at which point he wasnt playing too much cricket and retired early .

It has to be as large as possible and worn while a player.

Amla,Moyo,Moen and Bedi(partially) can't even recall others when remembering their knocks but these 4 i can't imagine them playing without beard.

This team would make a great AD for All clear Beard Dandruff shampoo. :afridi2

Actually Afridi has become more well known and iconic after the grew his beard (post 2003)

LOL :D Which Indian forums bro??

ICF.

Used plural by mistake. :))

I should be there too i guess. Isn't it strange that i am an Indian and the only cricket forum i am on is Pakpassion :D
Amazing place this... excellent discussions, quality posters, fun banter and a very knowledgable and articulate crowd.
My favorite is this guy MenInG

Imagine Tendulkar, Dravid with beards. :amla

Sachin had a bit of a stubble once upon a time:

Haha...I was like that for over a year. Only Pakpassion.

Excellent points raised.

Length - IMHO, as long as its more than a stubble, it should count. What Kohli currently has is more than a stubble, but not Amalesque! Kohli's should qualify too

Style - I am not sure goatee would suffice. Unless the player keeps that same goatee for most of his cricketing career

Time Period - Basically, if you think of a player, the beard should be part of his icon. He should've had the beard for more than half of his career.

Looking back, I can only think of 4-5 players that I can think of who would qualify

Amla
Moeen (Not a spectacular enough career though)
WG Grace
Bedi
Afirdi
Kohli (IIRC, he has normally had a decent beard. definitely more than a stubble, and for a greater part of his career)

Did not qualify
Inzi - Only kept a beard for the last 4-5 years of his career
MoYo - Kept a beard only 2005-2010, whereas he started his career in 1998

Did any of the west indians from 70s-80s keep a beard for an unusually long period?

If a post retirement beard clause is included, I could make a great XI exclusively of Paksitani players.

Who is in your all time bearded test XI?

Mike Brearley
Saeed Anwar
Hashim Amla
Viv Richards
Inzamam-ul-Haq
W.G.Grace
Moeen Ali
Daniel Vettori/Adil Rashid/Imran Tahir
Mushtaq Ahmed/Saqlain Mushtaq
Fast bowler
Fast bowler

No idea who the wk is or the quicks. Seem to be a lot of quality spinners with beards but not as many fast bowlers.

I dream of a day when a man will not be judged by the length of his beard.
