I have always been under the impression that the English crowd loves its test cricket more than one day internationals. So I am curious to know how the mood is in the country, especially when compared to the Ashes 2005 test series victory.

Ashes 2005.

It’s hard to explain how much getting the Ashes back after they were in enemy hands for sixteen years felt. Especially after that titanic duel against a team of champions, with three tests in succession going to the wire.

The WC win is more a sense of relief than exultation.

It was The Ashes 2005. England were expected to win the WC whist no one expected them to win The Ashes. Also the way they played fearless and positive cricket was unheard of for them.

Mcgrath missing means half of the major threat gets nullified. So in that sense it was never impossible.

Why? We don’t know what would have happened had he played all five tests. Australia were complacent and heavily reliant on two bowlers when the rest weren’t up to the job, and got found out by the best England side of the last forty years.

I was fortunate enough to attend the final test match at the Oval.

The atmosphere for that match was on a completely different level to the one I attended at Lords this year for the Aussie/England game.

Watching us toil in home and away series throughout the late 80's up to 2005 and then to finally beat them in a series that had everything was special.
