Former batter Virender Sehwag reckoned that India should play with ‘Bharat’ written on their jerseys in the 2023 World Cup to be played from October 5 to November 19.

Sehwag said that India should take inspiration from the Netherlands and Myanmar and change the name on their jerseys for the mega event.

Sehwag, who played a crucial role in India’s triumph in the 2011 World Cup, dropped a series of tweets to put forth his opinions. He also tagged Jay Shah, the Secretary of the BCCI, in all his tweets.

“Team India nahin #TeamBharat. This World Cup as we cheer for Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Jaddu, may we have Bharat in our hearts and the players wear jersey which has “Bharat” @JayShah,” Sehwag wrote.

“In the 1996 World Cup, Netherlands came to play in the World cup in Bharat as Holland. In 2003 when we met them, they were the Netherlands and continue to be so. Burma have changed the name given by the British back to Myanmar. And many others have gone back to their original name,” he stated.

“I have always believed a name should be one which instills pride in us. We are Bhartiyas, India is a name given by the British and it has been long overdue to get our original name ‘Bharat’ back officially. I urge the @bcci @JayShah to ensure that this World Cup our players have Bharat on our chest,” Sehwag added.

Actually Govt is also mulling to change the name of India officially to Bharat. This is after the opposition parties came together to form an alliance and used the name 'I.N.D.I.A' for their political gain. A special session of parliament is being called this month and the chances are the resolution bill to change the name of the country will be passed. If its passed and constitutionally the name is changed, BCCI has no other option but to replace the name on jersey as well.

I think the name 'India' was given by Greeks not the British. Derived from Indus river

Please see this for the wider discussion on this topic.

Bharat was the original name of the land anyways. Its better than calling India as Hindustan. The land of Hindus. Has religious connotations to it.

Actually both Bharat and India are the official names even mentioned in our constitution. Article 1 in the Constitution can read: “Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States. So there is no need to change. All they need to do is just start using Bharat everywhere instead of India.

Well no one is stopping you. You guys don't even speak your own languages on tv without half of it being in English.

From Time: "The name India is an Anglicization of the Sanskrit word for the Indus river, sindhu, and was introduced during the Crown's rule over India from 1858 to 1947. The name Bharat, also Sanskrit, originates from ancient Hindu religious texts, the Puranas. The texts describe a large land mass on which humans live on, and one region of this landmass is referred to as Bharatavarsa."

India is a democracy. Let them choose to call themselves what they want imo

What is wrong if they say Bharat instead of India? The Hindi of India is "Bharat".

Is it acceptable for the people of India to consider a name change? I find it puzzling that there's so much debate between India, Bharat, or Hindustan, with multiple names for a single country which can be quite confusing.

This is just an election gimmick by sanghis. No Indian minds Bharat, India or Hindustan. Just that feku has to play dirty politics to win some votes.

Cricketing terms

Imagine going to a Cricket game and people not shouting India, India

Bharat Bharat does not have a ring to it, I feel

Petty issue... Hindi media and most other regional language media have been using "Bharat" right from the beginning anyways. "India" is used only in Indian English media and all casual discussions among masses... It is like stop using car, bus, computer, etc in our local dialects and forcefully use Sanskrit names. Nobody prefers this. Instead of shouting on this it is better to ask ourselves (mainly kids) to use local language words for vegetables, fruits, etc, which we have been using from many centuries! Even this country concept is a recent thing (officially 70 odd years and maybe 150 to 200 years from the time of freedom movement we started to identify ourselves as countrymen!)

I believe Turkey also changed their name to Türkiye

And I read (a while ago) Wales considering changing name to Cymru

so no more “INDIAAAAAA INDIA” chants at the grounds? No more chakday India songs at the grounds? Music to my ears.

Sunil Gavaskar's views on the topic.

cause there is politics behind it.

basically an alliance been formed against modi by the name of I N D I A. Thus, modi govt is doing this name change.

They will be dragging in their politics to center stage now.

People are strangely reacting as if they heard this word Bharat just now.

India has always been Bharat and to my knowledge even Pakistanis have always often referred to us as Bharat and Hindustan.

Again, making it sound like just BJP or Modiji want it.

Literally the entire nation is with them on this.

No one but staunch leftist are opposing this and they’re just alienating themselves further from mainstream politics with this blind opposition.
